St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey 07936 www.saintroseoflimachurch.org The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 31, 2017 We gather this weekend to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. On Monday, January 1 st, New Year s Day we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. As I think of Mary the Mother of God I contemplate a woman dressed in the robes of a queen with a beautiful crown on her head holding in her arms her Son, the future King dressed in robes of splendor. We certainly understand however, that Mary s dignity and Mary s royalty is seen not in the royal robes and the golden crown but in her humble, loving embrace of the Child Jesus, the Savior of the world whom she bore through the Holy Spirit. We see Mary at different times of her life. As the pretty young girl, holy and humble accepting the invitation to be the mother of the Savior. Later in her life we see Mary as the middle aged mom, some wrinkles on her beautiful face and her hands somewhat worn from cooking, cleaning and caring. In the latter part of her life we see Mary having been through the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of her beloved Son now living in Ephesus, Turkey. Now her beautiful face is full of wrinkles, her hands are worn. She is now aware that her Son Jesus, through the grace of St. John the Evangelist, has given her all the people of the world to be her children too. She understands that as she is the mother to Jesus, she is mother to us. She guides us, she intercedes for us, she prays for us as we, her children follow the directive of her Son, our King, our Savior, our Brother Jesus. Many of you are aware that my youngest sister Cait is a diplomat and two years ago was appointed as the Irish Ambassador to Vietnam. All of my siblings and I are very close. This Christmas Cait is having a get together at her home in Hanoi. My brother Michael and his children Caitrina and James arrived from Australia and will stay until mid-january. My brother Fintan arrived from Dublin for Christmas and stays until early January. As you read this article I am thrilled to be with my siblings in Hanoi. I flew out of JFK at midnight Christmas night and arrived in Hanoi 21 hours later. A little bedraggled but thrilled to be with my siblings for the Christmas New Year s Season. I will return on Friday, January 12 th in time for our Antioch weekend. I ll have lots to tell you upon my return. As we begin this new year we place our lives in the loving care of Mary the Mother of God and know that through her Son Jesus we will be filled with every grace and blessing. On behalf of Fr. Matthew, I wish you a blessed and healthy 2018. Happy New Year! Father Owen
