2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island Life-long faith formation is an important part of the discipleship journey. In order to follow, learn from and become like Jesus as our leader, we have to form our faith and do it well our whole life. What does it mean to form our faith? That is an important question that constantly needs to be answered for each of us individually and for the parish as a whole. As a parish, we need to offer classes for all those who are of grade school age through high school age before confirmation. Our parish does have a very good preparation for the sacraments and education in between them. The difficult part is having a well-rounded formation for these young people. The best formation happens when the young families attend mass, pray together, practice household devotions and find ways to share faith in any and every way possible. It would also be good to have some uniquely adolescent opportunities to live faith in youth groups. That is an ideal, that in no time has it ever done very well but there have been some families that have done it better than others. We should also not let go of our ideals as we strive to form Faith Formation Catechetical Sunday The Catholic Church in the United States designates the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday today we celebrate and pray for the Church s mission to teach the Gospel to all people. Stella Maris catechists are responding by sharing their gift of faith with our children. As parishioners, we are all called as disciples to share the Gospel message and "break the silence". The following excerpt from Christian Post Magazine provided some good food for thought: "D. L. Moody (1800's) may well have been the greatest evangelist of all time. In a 40-year period he won a million souls, launched a great Christian publishing business and inspired literally thousands of preachers to win souls and conduct revivals. One day a lady criticized D. L. Moody for his methods of evangelism in attempting to win people to the Lord. Moody's reply was "I agree with you. I don't like the way I do it either. Tell me, how do you do it?" The lady replied, "I don't do it." Moody retorted, "Then I like my way of doing it better than your way of not doing it." Personally I think Jesus was the greatest evangelizer as stated at the website thecatholicspirit.com: " The Greatest Evangelizer - The Spirit of the Lord rested upon Jesus, and he was appointed to bring glad tidings to all (see Luke 4:18). Jesus came to proclaim the gospel of God (Mark 1:14) and he instructed his followers to continue his mission to make disciples of all nations...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19,20). If we take our cues from Jesus, evangelization begins at home with spouse and children and then moves to our wider family and friends." Catechetical Sunday is another gentle reminder to share the power of the Gospel with others. -Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Christian Service & Responsibility If you are in financial need, Stella Maris needs to help you. Please call the parish office or speak with Father Ruby. Dear Fellow Parishioners our children and youth in the faith. The other problem is that after confirmation too often, we stop faith formation altogether. We think that as long as we have the sacraments of initiation, we are initiated and done with whatever it means to be a member. That could not be farther from the truth. To be initiated is just the beginning as in every group that one becomes a member. The church is no different. The RCIA and the way in which people became members of the church in the early days, end with mystagogia. Mystagogia is the time in which the people who have been gone through the liturgies/sacraments which welcome into the church continue to reflect on what has happened so that they can live in to them well. For those of us who were baptized as babies and educated as children, mystagogia really lasts all our life. It is impossible to ever fully understand God and how we become a part of Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit by means of the church but we are meant to continue to try so that we become more of what we are meant to be. We know that if we have a goal, we do seek it and continually become closer to it as we learn about and do what is involved in achieving it. The same is true for our faith. We need to spend time reading about our faith, studying the bible specifically, growing in our prayer, becoming more moral and simply more like Jesus. We do that on our own but also in small groups in our parish. The small groups can be means of education or simply means by which we share our faith and become closer together in love. Ultimately, we know that the goal of the Christian life is to accept and live in God s love. Faith formation has no other ultimate goal. Every Catholic has to ask him/herself regularly if s/he is growing as a Christian in our mental knowledge, moral practice, spiritual depth and relational love. As a parish, we need to help people to answer those questions in how they live. In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor St. Teresa taught that God doesn t expect great deeds from all or even most of us but is more than satisfied with the little acts of love we perform on a daily basis. From St Teresa of Calcutta: Missionary, Mother, Mystic. NEXT MISSION TRIP Thursday Oct. 13 we will spend the day at Sunshine House in Sturgeon Bay helping in the production area and interacting with their clients with developmental disabilities. 5 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time-September 18, 2016 Worship and Music Column Sing to the Lord! This past weekend, I had the opportunity to go to Mass at a parish in a tourist area on the East Coast. The Mass was celebrated by the bishop and there was a special worship guide as in addition to the liturgy of the day (24 th Sunday in Ordinary Time), a special occasion was also being celebrated at that particular Mass. This struck me with the many similarities between this East Coast parish in a tourist area and our Midwest parish in a tourist area. The worship guide was very well done, the organist and the cantor were both accomplished and the pipe organ was magnificent! The only thing was, I was just about the only person singing even though I didn t recognize any of the hymns I was sight -reading the music. I am able to sight-read the music, but what about all the other people in the assembly? This is the ministry all liturgical musicians and worship directors pray and ponder about: how to engage our assemblies in full, active and conscious participation in singing? How to ensure the music supports the sacred scripture and the prayers of that liturgy? How to introduce new music, but not too much at one time so that it is overwhelming? How to mix newer hymns with those that are familiar? How to allow enough time for people to learn the music, but not be bored? How to play it in a key that is comfortable for all in our assemblies to sing? For our parish, it is a particularly thoughtful and prayerful subject because of all our many visitors that come from all parts of the country. How to incorporate all the above while at the same time have music that is familiar across the country? In selecting music for our liturgies, the most important criteria is that it support the sacred scripture and prayers of that particular liturgy. It is a ministry that liturgical musicians and worship ministers take very seriously and put much time and prayer into their preparations. Thank you for your prayers, support and for your participation and singing at Stella Maris Parish. Kathy Sedan, Worship & Music Minister P.S. A new Blue Worship Guide along with a new Mass Setting is coming soon..more information on that in next week s column!
