A few words from Sara Landau, Hesder Girl 2015-2016 At the beginning of this week s Parasha, we read of the prophecy Rivka receives about her twins one will work for the other. But it seems that despite this prophecy, Yitzchak and Rivka have different plans for the future of their children; Yitzchak tries to bless Esav and Rivka tries to interfere. While reading the parasha, I noticed a certain phrase recurring, though not always identically: " בּ ע בוּר תּ ב ר כ נ פ שׁ י בּ ט ר ם him 1. Yitzchak calls Esav and asks him to hunt for die). (In order that my soul should bless you before I אָמוּת 2. But when Rivka tells this to Yaakov she says that Yitzchak s words were die). (And I will bless you before Hashem before I ו א ב ר כ כ ה ל פ נ י ה' ל פ נ י מוֹת י " 3. Later, when Yaakov is dressed as Esav he comes up to his father with the meat Rivka prepared and offers Yitzchak to eat בּ ע בוּר תּ ב ר כ נּ י נ פ שׁ " (In order that your soul should bless me), and this is also how Yitzchak responds upon accepting the gift. 4. Finally, Esav brings his father meat that he hunted " בּ ע ב ר תּ ב ר כ נּ י נ פ שׁ (In order that your soul should bless me). One way to understand the difference between the second quote and the others is that Rivka understood that Yitzchak wished to pass Go-d s special promise to Avraham over to Esav and she tried to prevent it. If so, how did Yaakov know later on to say the original words Yitzchak told Esav? That must have been part of the act (Rivka obviously filled him in ) Was Rivka right? Was this blessing Go-d s special promise to Avraham? If it was, we can understand the importance Rivka and Esav attributed to it, but we would have to explain why it is only Rivka who mentions Go-d. If it was not, we do not understand why Rivka says it was, and we would need to explain what it means that Yitzchak s soul will bless his sons. I would like to suggest that Rivka wanted to ensure that Yaakov will receive the blessing, but what she did not know was that Yitzchak was actually not planning on passing Go-d s promise onto either son; at least not at this stage. Our commentators are split on what Yitzchak knew when making the blessing some say that Yitzchak knew he was actually blessing Yaakov and some say that he truly thought it was Esav. The former have a problem with the verse: ; "ו יּ גּ שׁ ו יּ שּׁ ק לוֹ ו יּ ר ח א ת ר י ח בּ ג ד יו ו י ב ר כ הוּ; ו יּ אמ ר ר א ה ר י ח בּ נ י כּ ר י ח שׂ ד ה א שׁ ר בּ ר כוֹ ה'"

(And he approached and he kissed him and he smelt the smell of his clothes and he blessed him; and he said see the smell of my son is like the smell of the field that Hashem has blessed) This is because the smell of a field naturally belongs to Esav. The latter find it hard to explain the verse: ":ו יּ ח ר ד י צ ח ק ח ר ד ה גּ ד ל ה ע ד מ א ד " (And Yitzchak feared an incredibly great fear) They need to explain why Yitzchak was fearful when he discovered that his first blessing was not given to Esav. I would like to suggest that Yitzchak believed that his sons were friends, or at least allies. He still hoped that both his sons would continue the covenant. He gives Esav a blessing that suits his personality, one that would ensure Yaakov and Esav can fulfil their purpose together. In the first blessing there is no mention of a promise from Go-d, but we do see Yitzchak smelling a field that is blessed by Go-d, what could have been the hechsher for Esav s work in Yitzchak s eyes. The great fear was when he saw that Yaakov went behind Esav s back and stole the blessing he realized that his family was not exactly one happy team. The dream of his family not splitting like his brother and himself is shattered. This is when Yitzchak has to face what Rivka already knew the covenant continues only with Yaakov, and Esav should not receive a real blessing. If so, why did Rivka continue to keep things from Yitzchak? When she sends Yaakov to deceive his father she says, " ע תּ ה ב נ י שׁ מ ע בּ ק ל י "ו (And now my son listen in my voice), and she says it again when she sends him away to Charan to run away from Esav, while telling Yitzchak that the reason was his Shidduch! Why did Rivka plot again? Rivka saw that Esav received no real blessing but Yaakov did not yet receive Avraham s promise. One thing she might have misunderstood is that a blessing could mean something a little different the word ברכה in this context is about prosperity, or benefiting from someone s goodness, and not necessarily the one covenant. When we read about Hashem talking to Yitzchak in the beginning of the parasha we read: "ו א ה י ה ע מּ ו א ב ר כ ךּ : כּ י ל וּל ז ר ע א תּ ן א ת כּ ל ה א ר צ ת ה א ל ו ה ק מ ת י א ת ה שּׁ ב ע ה א שׁ ר נ שׁ בּ ע תּ י ל אַב ר ה ם... ו ה ר בּ ית י א ת ז ר ע כּ כוֹכ ב י ה שּׁ מ י ם... ו ה ת בּ ר כוּ ב ז ר ע כּ ל גּוֹי י ה אָר ץ " (And I will be with you and I will bless you. For to you and to your seed I will give all these lands and I will establish the oath which I swore to Avraham And I will

multiply you seed like the stars of the heavens And all the nations of the world will be blessed by your seed) We can interpret the word bracha here as a few different promises, or one promise with different positive results. The blessing from Avraham only comes at the end of the parasha, and that is where we recognise words that we know from previous covenants: "ו א ל שׁ דּ י י ב ר א ת ו י פ ר ו י ר בּ ; ו ה י ית ל ק ה ל ע מּ ים. ו י תּ ן ל א ת בּ ר כּ ת אַב ר ה ם ל וּל ז ר ע א תּ ל ר שׁ תּ א ת א ר ץ מ ג ר י א שׁ ר נ ת ן א ה ים ל אַב ר ה ם " (And Kel-Shakai (Hashem) will bless you and will make you fruitful and multiply; and you shall be a community of nations. And He will give you the blessing of Avraham to you and to your seed with you to inherit the land of your inhabitance that Hashem gave Avraham). Hashem is named Kel-Shakai, we see the word yerusha (inheritance), and more. One last thing we see is the past tense ים ל אַב ר ה ם א שׁ ר נ ת ן א ה (that Go-d gave Avraham), as opposed to the blessings Yitzchak gave before which only spoke about the future. But the past is here, it is happening again the covenant continues only with one of the two sons, until Yaakov s death where we hear blessings for 12 different tribes that together make Am Yisrael.

The Halacha that Esav hates Yaakov is unfortunately kept alive throughout the generations. Today we are faced with a new phase, the terror of knifing; its goal is to cause one to fear and to think twice about walking safely anywhere in Israel, to cause doubt and to question -can we ever lead a normal life in our own homeland? These times are challenging for those that have loved ones living or studying in Israel and every news byte is a cause of concern. Did we make the right choice in sending them there or leaving them there? These times are challenging for our Shlichim being away from home and disconnected from Israeli society, with a sense of frustration of inhibiting their help for Israel. Even more so as we enter the month of Kislev, associated with bravery, we are standing strong with Israel. Just a few weeks ago, on Motzei Shabbat of Sukkot, on Hoshana Rabbah, we witnessed an act of bravery which serves as a source of strength and pride for Am Yisrael. Just by Rechov Hagai in the old city, a terrorist attacked Aharon and Adele Benita and their toddler son. They killed Aharon and managed to knife Adele. Harav Nechemiah Lavi heard screams for help. He did not hesitate, but rather dashed outside to intervene and save Jewish lives he did not even know. He struggled with the terrorist who unfortunately severely wounded him. Through Rav Nechemia's act of bravery the terrorist's rampage was impeded, tragically paying with his life. On Rav Nechemia's rifle belt was written: "בנין האומה ואהבת חינם " "Building of the nation and unconditional love" Rav Nechemia, known for his smile, shared love and warmth to all those who came in contact with him, devoted his life to Torah and the settling the land of Israel. During these difficult times Rav Nechemia's act of bravery and devotion is an inspiration to all of us, enabling us to stand strong with Israel. According to the Oxford Dictionary a nation is: "a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language inhabiting a particular state or territory." Currently, due to unfortunate circumstances of our exile from our home land, the Jewish people do not seem to fit this definition. It is true that we are all descended from Avraham and Sarah (whether physically or spiritually) and that we share the same history (as described in the twenty four books of the Tanach). It is also true that we have inherited from our ancestors common cultural attributes (such as the pursuit of justice, heart for kindness, a love of learning, and a desire to make a better world)

Page 3 of 7 12/11/2015 and that Hebrew has been the language of the Jewish people for the last 3.000 years in prayer and learning (and now again in speech). Yet it seems that we are lacking the most important qualification of a nation: a land which unites us all! Let us consider if the land of Israel can be that missing link. On one hand, it definitely unites the Jewish people: It is the place of our origin. It is the place of our destiny. It is the country we cry about on Tisha B'av. It is the country we dream of on Passover. It is the country we pray for in the midst of our weddings. It is the country where the righteous wish to be buried at the end of their days. But for over one thousand years the majority of the Jewish people did not dwell there. Even today the Jewish People reside in over one hundred countries, spread over six continents. How does the land of Israel keep us as a nation if we do not all dwell there? Rabbi Mordechai Breuer answers that the unique relationship each of our forefathers had with the land of Israel set a precedent for the future generations of their descendants. Our nation sometimes has a relationship with the land like of Avraham (Aliya), sometimes like of Yitzchak (Dwelling), and sometimes like of Yaakov (Return). Avraham made Aliya to Israel. Avraham was born in Ur, the biggest metropolitan city of ancient times. On God's command he left the culture and technology of his birth place and made his home in the not-cultivated land of Israel. Avraham shows us that Israel is our homeland regardless of our place of birth. Yitzchak lived in Israel. Yitzchak was born in the land and even in tough times did not leave. Yitzchak cultivated the land and he didn't give up when the locals opposed his efforts. He kept on digging new wells until they realized that he is committed to the land and here to stay. Yitzchak teaches us that our homeland is Israel, no matter what others claim. Yaakov returned to the land of Israel. When he was forty years old, Yaakov left the land of Israel to live in Aram. There he was very successful. Yet Yaakov left his wealth to return to his homeland. Yaakov shows us that even if we live elsewhere the country of Israel is still our home. Yaakov demonstrated this again when he was living in Egypt and commanded his children to make sure he will be buried in Israel. He was telling his children "You might temporarily need to live outside Israel - maybe even for hundreds of years, but don't forget that your true place of residence is the land of Israel."

Like Avraham Avinu, the Jewish People were born outside of Israel and we "made Aliya" to establish our homes in the promised land. Like Yitzchak Avinu, the Jewish people cultivated the soil, fought the Pelishtim who contested our existence, and ultimately established ourselves as the true residents of the land of Israel. Like Yaakov Avinu, the Jewish people had to leave the land and found themselves in a new place with an opportunity for prosperity. Yet when the Jews had the ability to return to the land of their forefathers they did. The first Aliya (Shesbazar), the second Aliya (Zerubavel), the third Aliya (Ezra) and the fourth Aliya (Nechemya) all contributed to the Second Commonwealth, a renewed Beit HaMikdash, and even a more glorified state than before. Today, on both a national and individualistic level, we witness the renewal of all three relationships that the Avot had with the land. From throughout the world, the Jewish People are making Aliya and returning to their home. In Israel, the Jewish people are cultivating the country, fighting off the enemy, and with a silent and modest determination, establishing the nation of Israel as the permanent residence of the land.
