A note from Father Richard: TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: For the next two Sundays, we hear about the prophet Amos and his denouncements of those in power who abuse the poor coupled with Jesus parables that focus on the perils of greed. The readings for the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time address the misconduct of those who are called to be good stewards. The prophet Amos emerged during Israel s classic period of prophecy, between the fall of the united Monarchy in 922 BC when the Promised Land was divided between the north and the south, and the return of the captives from Babylonian Exile in 538 BC. Over the course of these four centuries, the prophets revealed certain basic truths about the God of Israel: God alone is the only God of the universe; God calls his people to be faithful to the covenants that he established with their ancestors; God cares deeply about the poor and the socially marginalized. Many of Amos prophetic oracles were directed against the social elites living in the northern kingdom of Israel in the mideighth century BC and focused on God s concern for the poor and socially marginalized living there. As a poor shepherd from Tekoa in the southern kingdom of Judah, Amos certainly knew from direct experience the plight of the poor in ancient Israel. Conniving, unjust, irresponsible, underhanded, thieving, and untrustworthy all words that could apply to the steward in this weekend s Gospel. Yet in the parable, the master gives him credit for his enterprising attitude, because even as he was losing his job, he was managing to look out for himself. Jesus does not recommend this sort of behavior, but he does point out what a believer must contend with in this world. Remaining just and true in modern society is not always easy, but it is the calling we have received, and we must strive to do it with all our hearts. ST. MARK PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL: The nature and purpose of the council as stated in the Guidelines: The Parish Pastoral Council acts in a consultative capacity to the pastor, the pastoral staff, and the ministries serving the Parish. This includes all matters relating to, but limited to, liturgy, worship, education, finance, parish life, community service, and administrative affairs. Its members form a community of prayer, leadership, and service. Guided by the pastor, the members of the council work together to plan, coordinate, and evaluate the pastoral work of the parish. They seek to listen to the Holy Spirit in discerning what is best for the parish in light of the Gospel, the Church s teaching and the experience and needs of the parishioners and the surrounding community. The members of the Council are (in alphabetical order): Chai, Stanley (Chairperson); Decker, Carol Ann (Secretary); DiBattista, John; Eleshewich, Janet; Florek, Fr. Richard (Pastor); Kopaczynski, Fr. Germain (Parochial Vicar); Lizardi, Deacon Mark (Permanent Deacon); Millecan, Sr. Mary Joan; McTeague, Robert; Sebro, Lloyd; Smith, Marc; Solomon, Howard (Vice Chairman); Tringali, John; Vega Claudia; Zebron, Fr. Sam (Parochial Vicar). If any parishioner has a suggestion or a concern, please contact one of the members. RCIA: Classes will start at the end of September. If you know of anyone who would like to become Catholic or in need of Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Communion, or Confirmation, please have them call the Parish Office. PARISH OFFICES: We have moved all the offices to the former school building. Therefore, all Parish business will be conducted at the new location. Thank you for your patience. PEOPLE ON CHURCH PROPERTY ASKING FOR MONEY: From time to time there are people in the church parking lot asking for money. They have good stories, sometimes some very sad stories. Some of the stories may be true and some may not. We would ask that you do not give them any money. Tell them to see one of the Friars we do have funds that can be used for this purpose. The outreach collection that we have a few times a year is for this purpose. Again, please do not give them any money. Some of these people are known to us, some go from parish to parish. Thank you. BLESSING OF ANIMALS: In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, we shall have the blessing of animals on Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 AM at the statue of St. Francis which is outside in front of the church. Bring your pets for a special blessing. 4

We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us. $1,000 Winning Numbers St. Mark Raffle $1,000 September 11, 2013 5-5-6 No Winner 5 Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. Being anointed truly means encountering Jesus. It is the Good News of God s loving care for us here and now as we are, body and soul. Anointing benefits the whole person. It helps the person to overcome those obstacles to grace and salvation which are a direct result of illness. It gives us a way of coping with whatever problems we may have: spiritual, physical and/or psychological. As we receive this sacrament, our priests will anoint our forehead and hands with blessed oil using the beautiful and powerful words: MAY YOUR BLESSING COME UPON ALL WHO ARE ANOINTED WITH THIS OIL, THAT THEY MAY BE FREED FROM PAIN AND ILLNESS AND MADE WELL AGAIN IN BODY, MIND AND SOUL. Our Refreshment Committee will provide a delicious snack at the main entrance immediately after Mass

Please join us as we commemorate with Franciscan communities around the world The Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi Thursday, October 3, 2007 7:00 P.M. Father Richard Pagano will be coming for a visit Saturday September 28th! Join us at the 4:00PM Mass as Father Pagano celebrates a Mass of Thanksgiving. The Birthline Walkathon at Emmanuel Church in Delray will be Saturday evening, October 5th, with Bishop Barbarito s Mass at 5:30PM followed by a walking rosary, light supper, music and singing. There are seats for those who cannot do the walking.
