They can easily get caught up with what they re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn t say, Don t eat. Don t cook. Don t buy clothes. He says, Don t worry. Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that Your heavenly Father knows all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. Our Mission St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Parish exists to form and send forth a community of disciples of Jesus Christ who witness by joyfully living the Gospel. Letter from the Pastor February 26, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Catherine of Siena, Part of being good stewards of the financial resources that the Lord has blessed us with is financial accountability. Although it is a little delayed, enclosed is the financial report for the parish for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2016, a few observations on the past fiscal year, and the budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Parish Surplus Last year, our revenue exceeded our expenses, resulting in a surplus of $208,418. Overall we are doing well financially. Thank you for your continued generosity! Because of this, we are able to offer more outreach to the poor and needy, make more improvements around campus, hire more staff to provide better pastoral care for the people of St. Catherine of Siena, and save for our future needs. Capital Improvements Over the last year, many capital improvement projects have taken place to improve our physical plant. The following projects totaling $386,088 were paid for from the school savings account: painting and water proofing the Incarnate Word building, Junior Building, and Senior Building; construction of the new walkway, and renovating the gym. The painting of the exterior of the church and bell tower cost $99,000 and was paid for from the parish savings account. The landscaping and repair of the sprinkler system in the Melancon Center parking lot totaled $18,500 and was paid for using the Church portion of the 2016 Gala proceeds. The 2016 fair proceeds of $190,000 were used to fund a number of projects on campus: painting parking lot fences, rekeying the entire campus, Melancon Center painting, choir loft renovations, landscaping on campus, the athletic awards banquet, fair room renovations, school yard electrical work, adoration chapel painting, painting the interior and exterior of the gym, painting the exterior of the Barrett, buying a new Church piano, lighting up the stained glass windows at night, and adding some security cameras. Additionally, $75,000 from the fair proceeds were used to supplement the school operational budget. Parish Tithing Report In response to the call to be Christian stewards, St. Catherine of Siena tithes 5% of the weekly income from the collection to help the poor and needy. Over the last year, thanks to your generosity, $43,000 from the parish tithing account has been distributed to support the following ministries: Ozanam Inn (Homeless Ministry), Women s New Life Center (Pro-Life), Bishop Perry Center (Homeless Ministry), Lantern Light (Feeding the Homeless), Our Lady of Perpetual Help School (Catholic School), Archdiocese of New Orleans Prison Ministry, Catholic Charities New Orleans, Bridge House Grace House (Substance Abuse Ministry), Center of Jesus the Lord (Homeless Ministry), Harry Thompson Center (Homeless Ministry), St. Joseph Abbey (Flood Assistance), Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (Religious Retirement), and Hams for Fans (Christmas Baskets). Your regular financial support has not only helped support the mission and ministry of St. Catherine of Siena, but it is being used to make a difference for those in need! Please read the financial report and budget for the new fiscal year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me or a member of the parish finance council listed below. Thank you for all that you do to support the life and ministry of St. Catherine of Siena Parish! May God continue to bless you and your family! Please contact Madylin Schneller at mschneller@scsgators.org to discuss this volunteer opportunity. Communal Anointing of the Sick: March 11 Join us on Saturday, March 11, as we celebrate a communal Anointing of the Sick at St. Catherine of Siena immediately following the 4:00 pm Vigil Mass. Anointing of the Sick The Gospels relate many stories of the sick coming to Jesus for healing. Besides laying His hands on them in prayer our Lord also made use of clay, spittle, and water to impart healing power. On other occasions, the simple act of touching His garments brought health and wholeness. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, Christ continues His ministry of spiritual and physical healing. Who can receive the Anointing of the Sick? The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not only for those persons close to death. It is also for anyone suffering from a serious physical, mental, or spiritual sickness as well as for those who are about to have surgery. What are the effects of the Anointing of the Sick? The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick brings peace, courage, and a strengthening of faith to the sick or dying person. If God so wills, some recipients may even experience physical healing. If it happens that there is no physical healing, it is our faith and hope that the Lord Jesus Christ always imparts spiritual healing for the forgiveness of sins in preparation for the Resurrection of the body on the last day. Parishioners are encouraged to bring relatives or friends who normally wound be unable to attend due to health limitations. Is there anyone sick among you? Let him send for the priests of the Church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, they will be forgiven him. James 5:14-15
