VOLUNTARY ANNOUNCEMENTS THE HYMN Reformation Sunday 30 October 2016 Präludium A Moll -The Assembly will please stand- Please refer to the following page. Diderik Buxtehude 1 The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word. From heav'n he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Elect from ev'ry nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth: one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with ev'ry grace endued. 3 Though with a scornful wonder this world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Through toil and tribulation and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. Oh, blessed heav'nly chorus! Lord, save us by your grace, that we, like saints before us, may see you face to face. 1.

THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM A. In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C. Amen. A. Joined to Christ in the water of baptism, we are clothed, by God s mercy, with his righteousness; let us give thanks for this holy gift We give you thanks, eternal God, that in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and from their midst you created the world with your Word, calling forth life, in which you still delight. Through the water of a flood you delivered those whom you called, Noah and his family with two of every kind. You led Israel through a sea, out of slavery, into freedom and the Promised Land. In Jordan s water you anointed Jesus, your beloved Son that, baptized into him, we too would be your sons and daughters, heirs with him of your eternal gifts. We praise you for the gift of water by which you nourish and sustain all life, and for the new life given in this holy water. Renew us in the life in Christ; pour out your Holy, life-giving Spirit on us; refresh us with your grace, mercy and love; and to you, our heavenly Father, be honor, praise and glory, through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy church now and forever. C. Amen. KYRIE

CANTICLE OF PRAISE Please refer to the following page.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P. The Lord be with you. C. And also with you. P. Let us pray: Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church from age to age. Pour out your Spirit on all your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in your Word. Protect and comfort us in times of trial, defend us against all enemies of your gospel, and bestow on your church in the world your heavenly peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C. Amen. but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Lector: Assembly: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN Verses 1&2 before the Gospel; verse 3&4 after the Gospel EPISTLE: Romans 3:19-28 -The Assembly will please sit- Paul s words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and the other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ s death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ. 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No,

GOSPEL: John 8:31-36 The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets people free from sin. 31 Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33 They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON CREED -The Assembly will please sit- -The Assembly will please stand-

1 A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; He breaks the cruel oppressor s rod and wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might he arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal. 2 No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is he! Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God s only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious. 3 Though hordes of devils fill the land all threat ning to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; they cannot overow r us. Let this world s tyrant rage; in battle we ll engage! His might is doomed to fail; God s judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him. 4 God s Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The kingdom s ours forever! Üks mees on võitlemisele meil' Isast appi tulnud! Kas tunned seda meest? Ta nimi: Jeesus Krist! See Issand suurest väest, see ainus Jumal tõest, võit Temale peab jääma! THIS WEEK AT ST.
