BULLION CEMETERY ADAIR COUNTY, MISSOURI may be reached by taking Highway 6 east from Kirksville about 5 miles where you turn north on a gravel road and go about 1/2 mile. The church and cemetery are on the east side of the road. On November 4, 1882, Leroy Spangler and Martha A. Spangler deeded to the Trustees of the Bullion Methodist Church and their successors, one acre, more or less, for a cemetery. Thus was the beginning of the. The cemetery was maintained at this time by the Trustees either by hiring someone or having work days once or twice during the year. As need for more space became evident, C. D. Cornell deeded on the 14th day of April, 1908, to the Trustees of the Bullion Church and their successors, one acre, more or less. The Trustees named at this time were: J. M. Thompson, John Propst, Otto Baker, Isaac Bragg, and E. S. Miller. They were responsible for all maintenance of the cemetery. This arrangement continued until August 1944, when the church board met and appointed Bert Patten, Floyd E. Wright and Charlie Guy, who served until their deaths. Mrs. Floyd E. Wright, secretary treasurer, kept the records. In 1967 Bertha Garrett became secretary treasurer. In 1968 Dorsey Thompson started a drive to obtain funds to provide perpetual care for the cemetery. In the fall of 1968, Bullion Church deeded the cemetery to the Association as the first step to obtain perpetual care. A meeting was held and board members elected were Dorsey Thompson, President; Robert Sangster, Vice-president; Beulah Anderson, secretary treasurer; Alena Nash, Hazel Gehrke, and Deta Patterson. By-laws were drawn up and adopted. A fund-raising program was started with personal calls and letters. Over $4,000 was raised and monies were obtained from 21 different states and Canada. A charter was obtained from the state of Missouri for the Association. A Time Certificate was purchased and the interest obtained, used for maintenance. Money was used to buy material for a fence around the cemetery. Dale Sees provided the tools and the material and built the plaque which stands by the front gate. On this plaque are listed the names of all persons who have contributed to this cause. Information on the burials was compiled by Hazel Gehrke and Elizabeth Laughlin in November, 1979. Re-typed from the 1979 Adair Cemetery Book by Michele Cragg, June 2003. Red indicates changes, notes, additions or from tombstone pictures on web pages.
