It has been a very quick ride for someone who at this time four years ago wasn t even a member of this magnificent organization. I took my 1 st Degree in late 2012 and quickly reached the level of 3 rd Degree and by mid-2013, I was becoming more active in the Council. By the start of 2014 being involved full-bore is what I knew what I wanted to. One year as Outside Guard during the 2014-15 fraternal year saw me ascend to Deputy Grand Knight last year and to where I currently stand before you. My inexperience with the Knights of Columbus is offset by my passion, my involvement, my wanting and willingness to learn as well as my openness to listen to those with knowledge and wisdom. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by a fantastic group of officers as well as a number of other brothers who are willing to help me in my pursuit to keep this council as vibrant, strong and relevant as it currently is. I must thank PGK Furman Miles for everything he accomplished during the last two years and I am grateful that he is staying on as a trustee. I will need his help and guidance in many matters and those of you who know Furman and what he has done and meant to this council, you know that is very good news for this council. You don t come in and replace a Furman Miles. You try to maintain everything he was able to get the council to accomplish through his leadership and hope you can maybe add a little more of the good. We face great challenges as a council. We are unique in our size and our scope and we are dealing with an ever-changing demographic of many of our brothers being at an advanced age and the challenge of getting younger men into the fold. And we must get those members who are not involved or as involved as they could be, to become more active. We do many great things for many different types of folks with many different needs. Our work some time takes a great deal of effort and is made more difficult as we certainly could use Continued on Page 3 The Vessel 1

Sick and Visitation Please keep the following members in your prayers: Anne Stancker Also, please keep in your prayers Barbara Cumberland, who recently passed away. May she rest in peace. Knights, our defining character is to worship God as this is the basis for our core values of charity, unity and fraternity. My hope to keep on seeing everyone in church wherein we are mystically uplifted to the beautiful and awesome heavenly liturgy, joining the angels, saints and brother knights throughout all time, praising God. Fraternally, Dr. Daniel J. Yet I still go. There may be a hundred no-go reasons for you as well. But you also, still go for those hundred no-go reasons, carefully examined, are foolish. That s because Christ the Lord purposefully established the church for our very necessary salvation. So why we should go vastly outweighs any negative deception to the contrary. Along with salvation, I like to include love of God, love of liturgy and the desire to serve. I especially enjoy seeing whole families together for Mass. This helps to support my own faith and we all need the backbone of faith to live life well. In fact, as District Deputy Message My Brothers All: Greetings on behalf of our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, newly elected State Deputy Charles Vagnarelli, and our State Officer from the Eastern Region, State Advocate Michael Kish. I am extremely excited to begin my 2 nd year as your District Deputy. As we enter this new fraternal year, I ask one simple favor from each of you. Ask a friend to join our order. It is only by new member growth and reinvigorating our current membership that we will be able to continue the great acts of charity that we are able to perform. I would be remiss if I did not thank Furman Miles PGK for his service to your council and our district. Furman helped to make my role a true pleasure, for which I am grateful. I offer my congratulations to the newly elected officers of your council. Led by Worthy Grand Knight, Joe Jones, I am confident your council will reach new heights. Please reach out to me if I can be of any assistance. Finally, please join me on Sunday 7/31 at 4pm for a wine tasting event at Sand Castle Winery. This tasting and food pairing education is a great time and was a huge hit last year. The event is open to all Knights and their wives and will run at a special discounted rate of $20pp. If you are interested please RSVP to me by 7/25 using my contact info below. Together through the grace of God we accomplished a lot of great charity work in the community, as well as sustained our strong relationships with the parishes we serve. I have learned so much in my two-year tenure from our PGK S and other leaders in the community. I am proud of all the officers who served in the council with me. They gave a lot of their time and talents to perform a greater good for the community they serve. These same men as I look back were extremely productive in their charity work because they gave selflessly as a team always, demonstrating integrity and sound principles along the way. Hail Brothers; you made my job much easier though all your efforts. I would also like to thank the families of our officers and members for your involvement and sacrifice over the years. It was a pleasure getting to know you and I m grateful for all you have done in making us a better council. I also enjoyed all the fun we had along the way. I would like to congratulate my successor, incoming Grand Knight Joe Jones. Joe has demonstrated great leadership and vision as an officer of the council over the past few years. Joe is very creative with really good ideas for the council. I m extremely confident Joe is going to do a fantastic job and I m looking forward to his leadership as Grand Knight. We do face real challenges ahead with our current Home scenario. It will require all of us going forward to confront the reality & gravity of the situation, work together, think creatively and strategically, perhaps even outside the box, as well as follow through on our concerted plan, in coming up with the best solution to the Council s Home woes. I would encourage as many as possible to stay close to the progress with our Home by attending the meetings and getting involved. Our home has been a big part of our identity for sixty years, we need to work hard to sustain it the best we can. However it does not define us as a council; what defines us is our continued charity work, our relationships built over 60 years in the community, as well as the sound principles that guide us. God bless, Furman Miles PGK Grand Knight s Message con t. from page 1 the intellectual and physical contributions of many more of our brothers. Think about how you can help, how you can become more involved. Attend our monthly business meetings, the first Tuesday of the month, beginning at 7:45 p.m. with the Rosary. There we discuss what we are planning to do in the future and there might be something that screams out to you, I think I can make that even be better. Maybe, there is something you would like us to do and would be willing to lead the efforts. By all means let us know. But being a Knight should be more than paying annual membership dues. It is about being involved and defending our faith by the good works we do and then stand we make against some of the very evils that flourish in a society that becomes more secular each and every day. Vivat Jesus, Joe Jones Financial Secretary Message Billing for the new fraternal year should have reached your home of record by now. Please submit your dues immediately to avoid suspension. Also, a note to all those members with students looking for scholarships; the council is not responsible for anything related to the PA State Scholarship Program. You must go directly to the PA State website for information. Fraternally, Jim Price, PGK Financial Secretary The Vessel 3

The Council Celebrates 60 Years Serving the Community Members got together on April 30 th at The Nest to celebrate our sixty years as a chartered council of the Knights of Columbus. The evening was filled with a jovial tone as members and guest swapped stories of our history and events of our past. Attendees also enjoyed fine spirits, and a wonderful meal. A formal presentation was given by Grand Furman Miles sharing the chronology of the events that led us up to today. Members also recognized some of our pioneers of the council with life time achievement awards. Congratulations to PGK s Henry Conroy, Albert Pillich, John Fidishun, and John Stancker for earning the awards and for all their years of service to our order. The Vessel 4

The council helped Father Myron celebrate his 60th Anniversary of his ordination on May 22nd. Congratulations to Father and thank you for all your remarkable years of service in the community. The council truly values the relationship with you and our friends from OLPH! The Vessel 5

2016 Golf Outing This year s Golf Outing was attended by over 90 participants who took in a glorious day of perfect weather and golfing festivities. It was a lot of fun and the council raised $13,000 for all of the great charity work we do throughout the year. Thank you to all the council officers and members who chipped in to raise money in sponsorships and garner participants for the event. A big thanks to all our sponsors and to Tom Gallagher PGK for chairing another successful outing for two years in a row. The Vessel 6
