I will do my very best to continue the work of my predecessors. I would like to thank Joe Wiggins for his service as Grand Knight, I enjoyed our close working relationship and I know I can count on his help in the future. I am also very happy to have Randy Paden as our Deputy Grand Knight. With Randy s help I know our Council will continue to improve in the areas of getting more members involved and having a good time doing it. Vivat Jesus Charlie Marino Grand Knight Last Month s Council Activities June 5th - During the Council s regular meeting, the new Officers for the Fraternal Year 2008 2009 were elected. The names of the new slate of Officers are now on the first page right box. Let us wish them and send our prayers that the new officers will guide our council to a successful year and extend our hands to them to make this Council well worth of the Knights of Columbus charter. To the officers of the past year, the Council thank you for all the hard work you have done. June 7th This day our Council served 73 steak dinner plates to the Scout Leaders. It was a successful dinner for the adult leaders of the BSA Thunderbird District. See Report on youth by Bro. Jerry Schleining, Scout Master. June 8th A beautiful sunny day turned out on our 3rd Annual Golf Outing at the Mountain View Golf Course. There were 25 foursomes (96 people total) who joined, enjoyed the sunshine and great camaraderie and vied for

some awards this day. Our Council netted about $3600. Chaired by Brother Scotty, the golf committee has done an exemplary job in making this event successful. Of course Our Dear Lord was very much instrumental in giving everyone a beautiful sunny and just-perfect Hawaiian temperature day. The Council is indebted to everyone who helped in this event, Big Thank Youoos in order. June 14th A good Saturday turned out when four of our Brother Knights, Joe Wiggins, Glenn Zmuda, Randy Paden and Charlie Marino acted as servers for the Parish Arts & Wine Stroll. It was a successful event, lots of wine and a great time for everyone who came. Great liaison work between our Council and the Parish. Great job Brothers. June 15th Father s Day. During the Coffee and Donuts after the 11:30am mass, Brothers Joe Wiggins, Glenn Zmuda and Dwayne Fellis raffled the tickets for the Barbeque Grill. And the lucky winner is Brother Larry Comella. May you have many Happy Grillings on your new Grill to come Brother Larry. He says now he can retire his old-tech grill. June 22nd Saturday, Brothers John Freuler, Charlie Marino, Doug Klein, Dwayne Fellis, AL Gudinas and 5 kids labored through the day and cleaned up and did landscaping job around our Hall. The Scouts are kicking it into high gear now with the great weather and fun times are ahead. The Cub Scouts of Pack 717 did a family camp in June at Oxbow Park. Some of the Scouts from the Troop helped out. A great time was had by all. The Scouts from the Troop went on a great backpacking trek down Zigzag Canyon this month. It was a great trip and all of the Scouts, event the new boy did real well. The Troop is getting ready for July when they are heading down to Madras for a weekend of Rock Climbing. The Crew has been active. They went a 20-mile bike trip and are working on their Sports Award. A special thanks to the Knights, especially those that worked hard to provide a great District Dinner for our Scout District. It was the best District Dinner we have had in over 10 years. Thanks again Knights! Special NOTE for all Members During one of our Council s dinner event, an issue came up that leads to this letter-for-allmembers to take note to heart. Please read carefully as it concerns all members. To: Grand Knight Joe Wiggins Grand Knight-Elect Charlie Marino From: PGK, Council Advocate John Freuler It s been brought to my attention that there are issues within East Multnomah Council 3179 that are in dire need of immediate attention. These issues relate to how some members of the Council treat certain specific members of the parish; general members of the parish; as well as other Brother Knights within the Council. Brothers, I would like to remind us all that we as Knights of Columbus are charged to, first and foremost, good Catholic Christian men which means that we are to be followers and emulators of Jesus Christ and His Teachings, the greatest of which is To Love God, and to Love Our Neighbors as Ourselves. I would hate to think that some of our own Brother Knights would harbor sentiments that would be counter productive to the direct teachings of Jesus as it relates to how we treat all other human beings, since we are all made in His image. I suggest that all Brother Knights carefully, and prayerfully, examine their own thoughts and feelings to the issues of politics, race, place of national origin, and their own outward behaviors towards each other. I never dreamed that I would have to say this to any of my Brother Knights, however at this time, I fell that I must. I want to be very clear, so there is no misunderstanding, in saying that there is no place within the Knights of Columbus for Racism or Prejudice towards any of God s children. Always remember that your behaviors are very visible, and do not go unnoticed. Your behaviors are noticed by your Brother Knights, other parishioners, other people from outside the parish, but most importantly, your behaviors are noticed by Your Divine Maker. Our treatment of one another should hopefully result with smiles on one another s faces. Those smiles, however, should never be at someone else s expense. Our treatment of one another should never result in feelings of embarrassment, shame, and lest of all, fear. These may sound like strong words, and I don t like to be accusatory. But there is definitely work to be done here. And it has to be done by us. We are all charged, as Catholics, to build up the Church. We are similarly charged as Knights of Columbus to build up the Council. Let s fix our own house so that others will appreciate being both members and guests.

Let s Love One Another, Respectfully yours, John Freuler
