Newsletter of the Denton Area Emmaus Community IT S ANOTHER YEAR FOR DENTON AREA EMMAUS I know some of you are wondering, How can you say it s the beginning of the year when it s July? No, the heat of the summer has not gotten to me. It s that time of year when you as the Emmaus Community have elected new board members. It s also when our Emmaus Board elects new officers. These changes occur each year. Nancy Daniel and Steve Hines have been elected back to the board, after serving a one-year term. Our new board members are Lisa Monnig and Joe Culwell. A big thank you to Roy Wells, Roy Bradshaw, and Steve Griffin for their past service. God has given each of us special talents and gifts to use in His service. It has been a joy to see these gifts used as we build our Emmaus Community. You truly are the hands and feet of Christ. It has been a pleasure to serve as your Community Lay Director for the last 2 years. We first signed our covenant with the Upper Room in February of 2001 not knowing what would lie ahead. There have been many challenges, but the board members have remained steadfast and met the challenges straight on. I will be remaining on the board and serving wherever called. Remember, Christ Is Counting on You... DeColores, Barbara Carruth A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW COMMUNITY LAY DIRECTOR I have always been told that leadership is a privilege. It is my privilege to have been elected to succeed Barbara Carruth as you Community Lay Director for the Denton Area Emmaus Community. We have come a long way as a community under Barbara s leadership. We have now held 8 Walks and brought 230 new persons into the World Emmaus Community. 230 new leaders for Christ in their local churches, 230 persons who have served or are going to serve God and the Community in Kairos, Chrysallis, Emmaus Servant Teams, and Inside Teams, 230 more sponsors thus building more new leaders for Him. It will be a challenge for me to follow in Barbara s footsteps, but I know she would say and I believe that God will be with us and guide us in the coming year. We will still miss you as our leader Barbara and we know we can count on your expert advice. Continued from A Message from our new Community Lay Director In this issue there will be a listing of the members of the new Board of Directors and their area of service. I challenge you to look at those areas and find a niche where you can make a difference, then call that Board Member and offer to help. Serving on a Servant Team and on an inside team are areas that we all know about, but guess what there are MANY areas that you may not know about; like helping to produce a newsletter, coping and/or mailing, inventorying the supplies, going to purchase supplies, being the Emmaus representative at your church, praying for Pilgrims, transporting the trailer, making items of Agape, serving lunch for an inside team, playing music at a Gathering, being involved with a Reunion Group, donating money, praying for the Team, sponsoring a Pilgrim, bringing a covered dish to send off or a Gathering, cleaning up after, loading the trailer, taking pictures of the Walk participants, praying for Community, making and putting up door signs, making Walk buttons, ordering name tags, praying for church, making lanyards, putting together lanyards and crosses, going to Candlelight, attending Gatherings, assisting with the database, assisting with the website, and of course there is always praying. As you can see we have plenty of tasks to go around and if we all get involved, they will be easy tasks that mean so much to the persons we serve in the name of God. May God continue to bless you and your family. Steve Hines Dallas Emmaus Walk #27 Table of John Remember to get pilgrim applications mailed in for our 2004 Walks! Page 3 WHAT S YOUR HURRY? In today s culture we find it difficult to wait for anything. We grow impatient waiting for an elevator. (Don t you love the person who beats on the button like that will make the elevator respond quicker?) We pace back and forth while waiting for a phone call. We act like caged animals waiting in line at the store. On the highway, we quickly pass one car, just so we can pull back into the right lane to get off at the next exit. There is even a restaurant that leaves a stopwatch on the table at lunch to prove that they can serve you lunch in 15 minutes. Even credit applications have been sped up; one even offers a 15 minute mortgage approval. In this culture of hurry up, Jesus invites us to step out of the rat-race and rest awhile. Mark tells us that Jesus heard the disciples reports and then told them to follow him to a quiet place to get away from the crowd and to rest (Mark 6:31). Our Walk to Emmaus was a sure-fire way to follow Jesus instructions. Away from the maddening crowd, fed well (and often) and given incomparable sleeping quarters we had the opportunity to be set apart from the real world and be refreshed spiritually. All of us left on Sunday with the yearning to keep that feeling and live at the same restful pace we experienced for those three days. How many have succeeded? The best thing about our fourth days is that we can make mid-course adjustments to live the way we promised. We can all use more patience with elevators and bible study, less pacing before anticipated phone calls and more pacing for the call of the Lord. Rather than cut off other drivers we can cut off sinful behavior and rather than be in a hurry we can be in ministry taking time, just as Jesus would, to extend the helping hand. It starts at home, then through your local church and into the kingdom of God. Don t allow your hurry to cause you to miss times of spiritual renewal such as community gatherings; times for sharing, such as your reunion group meeting; and times of service-whether team participation or sponsorship. Don t allow the hurry up, instant results world deprive you of living with an overflowing cup! GENTLE REMINDERS We would like to introduce a new column for our newsletter called Gentle Reminders. As everyone knows we are a new community and are in covenant with The Upper Room to conduct our community exactly as directed in The Handbook of Emmaus. Sometimes, we as a Board of Directors or as a community member don t always agree with the rules we are given, but we are morally obligated to follow them as directed. We are not going to approach this as being legalistic, but as being obedient to the Model. We welcome your comments or suggestions, and we promise to discuss them at our monthly Board meeting and to research in the Model before presenting them to you in this newsletter. Do not wear your lanyards to send off Only people who have previousy been on a walk should attend candlelight The Community Yahoo Email Group is only for Emmaus communication

Page 5 Back to school - Emmaus style I hope that this summer has been a good one for you and your family. If your family is like my family, it is passing by too quickly. Before we know it, school will start for our children and they will be immersed in their studies. In keeping with the spirit of learning, I would like to encourage everyone to attend our Annual Training Day on August 23. This will be held at First United Methodist Church in Lewisville, 907 West Main St, in the Family Life Center from 1-4 pm, followed by a covered dish dinner from 4:30-5:30, then we will end the day with a community gathering. I have been involved with Emmaus since 1994 and have attended many training events. It would seem that the subjects would be old-hat to me by now, but I can honestly say that I learn something new each and every time I attend a session. I have attended sessions on Sponsorship, Coming Down From the Mountain, Chrysalis and many others. For this training, we plan to have sessions on Sponsorship, Music, Preparing a Talk, and other subjects. There will be three 45-minute sessions, which will allow us to rotate to several topics. Please talk about this in your reunion groups and at your local churches and encourage others to attend. We would like to have an overflow crowd so that we can all expand our knowledge of Emmaus subjects even ones we may think we have no interest in. We need to support those who will be leading the sessions by attending them. I hope to see you there.
