THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, NOVEMBER 16, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Que bec s Immaculate Conception Cathedral, dating from 1664, was the principal church for a diocese that then included all of France s North American territories, an expanse of land that far exceeded all of Europe in size, extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the great western plains and, southward, down the Mississippi Valley to Louisiana. When a fire damaged the church in 1922, one casualty was a painting of Our Lady created in the 18th century. Sister Mary of the Eucharist, a Sister of Charity of Que bec, painted an appealing replacement for it that now overlooks the cathedral s main altar. You can see it on the front page of this bulletin. A copy of this painting is the visual centerpiece for the current Knights of Columbus Immaculate Conception Prayer Program, which began in August of 2013 and will conclude this December 28. We will have this reproduction on display in the main church at next weekend s Masses. In addition, there will be a special prayer service in Mary s Chapel next Saturday after the Mass, at which the painting will also be shown. Archbishop Ge rald Cyprien Lacroix of Que bec, speaking at the inauguration of this initiative of the Knights of Columbus, said: May Our Lady accompany our Church and all the members of our Order all over the world Like her, we want to be open to the Holy Spirit and available to accomplish God s plan in today s world. And following Our Lady s example, we want to leave with haste as she did, to share the Good News of the Gospel [with] a world that needs the hope and the truth and the love of Jesus Christ. The interfaith Thanksgiving service sponsored by the River Dell Interreligious Clergy Association will take place next Sunday at 4:00 pm at the First Congregational Church of River Edge, located at 109 Continental Avenue (at Kinderkamack Road). This year s preacher is Reverend David Horst, the pastor of Paramus s Central Unitarian Church. The prayers and uplifting music we share will be a fine way to approach the Thanksgiving holiday, as people from a variety of faith traditions thank God together for the blessings they have received, keeping faith with the words of Psalm 20: Sing praise to the Lord, you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. Msgr. David Hubba See our bulletin IN COLOR at sjcnj.org 3 IMAGE OF OUR LADY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION TO VISIT OUR CHURCH NOVEMBER 22-23 A Welcoming Prayer Service when the icon arrives will be held on Saturday, November 22 immediately following the Mass. We will move to the upper church (at approximately 9:00 am) for the Service which will replace our Third Saturday Prayer. The icon will be displayed at all the weekend Masses in the upper church. The Miraculous Medal Novena on Monday, November 24 will be moved to the upper church where we will hold a Closing Prayer Service as part of the Novena. AN EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOU! MARY OF NAZARETH FILM DECEMBER 7 FREE! Did you miss the chance to see the wonderful feature film on the life of Our Blessed Mother or would you like to see it again? SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BLESSED MOTHER AND THE SAINTS? WOMEN'S CORNERSTONE MEETING NOVEMBER 19 As we approach the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8, we may discover that we have questions about the woman God chose to be the mother of His Son. If you have ever made a Cornerstone Retreat, even at another parish, you are very welcome to attend our monthly meeting this Wednesday evening, November 19, at 8:00 pm in the Knights of Columbus Hall at 199 River Road in New Milford. A wonderful evening of praise and thanksgiving is in store for us as we actively participate in planning our Cornerstone Weekend which is scheduled for March 6-7, 2015. Please come. Registrations for our March retreat weekend will be available if you want to invite a friend to it. Help to spread the word that Jesus cares and so do we! See you on Wednesday at 8:00 pm. What s all the fuss about Mary and the saints? many wonder. Do they think she s a goddess? Doesn t all this attention to Mary take away from a relationship with Jesus? SAINT JOSEPH PARISH GARDEN OF SAINTS CONTINUES TO GROW Work is continuing on the commemorative path and shrines of the Garden of Saints located behind the parish office/rectory on Harrison Street. In addition to the shrine (with memorial pavers) to Saint Francis of Assisi (not visible in the photo), and the shrine to Saint Anthony of Padua, shown surrounded by beautiful variegated holly and Andromeda plants, workers are now completing the stonework that will support our shrine to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux ( The Little Flower ). In addition to these three saints, the Garden will also include a beautiful area dedicated to the Blessed Mother and our patron Saint Joseph, an area with benches for quiet prayer and reflection, and a finished patio area for parish gatherings and hospitality. Completion of the garden is expected in April. Everyone will be welcome to spend time there enjoying its peace and beauty. If you have any questions about it, please see Facilities Director Tom Meli. All this has been done thanks to the donations of generous parishioners. No parish operating funds have been spent on it. 4
