St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, The Epiphany of the Lord In this opening letter for the year of 2017 I want to address an issue of great concern that reaches into our parish as well as our Fauquier County Community. Six weeks ago I mentioned in a past letter that the town chief of police, Chief Louis Battle, called the ministers of the various churches in Warrenton to speak out on the topic of Drug Overdoses that have filled our hospitals and funeral homes this past year. Fr. Fimian and I were honored to be among those church leaders invited to the station for the briefings. At the initial meeting four mothers who had lost children to the scourge of drug abuse well indicated the emotional side of suffering this problem brings our local community. The ministers indicated an interest in approaching the school board to address our concerns in this matter. Well and good and Fr. Fimian and I are on board for such an initiative. In addition we selected the date of January 8 th where all church leaders would speak out on the Heroine Epidemic. Enclosed are the initial stats on the problem. WPD Overdoses 2016 Date DOW Victim Race Sex Drug Outcome Age 1/29/2016 Friday 21 W M Heroin Survived 2/3/2016 Wednesday 26 W F Oxycodone Survived 3/10/2016 Thursday 35 W M Vicodin Survived 4/1/2016 Friday 39 W F Heroin Survived 4/23/2016 Saturday 44 W F Heroin Death 5/6/2016 Friday 26 B M PCP Survived 5/7/2016 Saturday 24 B M PCP Survived 5/7/2016 Saturday 35 B F PCP Survived 5/8/2016 Sunday 28 W M Fentanyl Survived 6/16/2016 Thursday 55 W M Heroin Death 7/8/2016 Friday 19 W M Heroin Survived 8/4/2016 Thursday 40 B F Unknown Survived 8/8/2016 Monday 24 W M Heroin Survived 8/12/2016 Friday 20 W M Heroin Death** 8/16/2016 Tuesday 31 W M Heroin Death** 9/1/2016 Thursday 26 W F Heroin Survived 9/7/2016 Wednesday 32 W M Heroin Survived - Naloxone 10/12/2016 Wednesday 51 B M Heroin Survived - Naloxone 10/12/2016 Wednesday 62 W M Heroin Death 10/12/2016 Wednesday 49 W F Heroin Survived - Naloxone 10/13/2016 Thursday 24 W M Heroin Survived - Naloxone 10/20/2016 Thursday 29 B F Heroin Survived- Naloxone 10/23/2016 Sunday 22 W M Percocet Death 4

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 08 January 2017 Notice the wonder drug, Naloxone, mentioned in the final column that is involved in the recovery of some folks who have collapsed in the drug overdose. Naloxone, sold under the brandname Narcan among others, is a medication used to block the effects of opioids, especially in overdose cases. The various law enforcement officials are now carrying this drug if needed in their service to the community. Pope Francis has spoken out a number of times on the problems of drug trafficking and addiction. I enclose one of his quotes. The scourge of drug-trafficking, which favors violence and sows the seeds of suffering and death, requires of society as a whole an act of courage. A reduction in the spread and influence of drug addiction will not be achieved by a liberalization of drug use, as is currently being proposed in various parts of Latin America. Rather, it is necessary to confront the problems underlying the use of these drugs, by promoting greater justice, educating young people in the values that build up life in society, accompanying those in difficulty and giving them hope for the future. We all need to look upon one another with the loving eyes of Christ, and to learn to embrace those in need, in order to show our closeness, affection and love." (Pope Francis) The great tragedy in life is that you only get one life. You can t afford to mess it up. It reminds me of a quote from the great Dr. Herby Rattner, who taught my father in medical school. God always forgives, Men sometimes forgive, and Nature never forgives. Let us not treat this drug problem lightly, or indifferently. If you re not sure what you will do if this problem meets you and your family don t be confused. When your grandchildren come to live with you because the parents are dead or in jail You will know what to do. If you find yourself with the possibility of becoming the permanent care taker for a spouse, child or neighbor burned out with drug abuse, allowing you little financial security to help you sleep at night You will know what to do. That is, help to identify the perpetrators before you have to identify the victims. These are evil times that deeply scar our future generations for this parish and our wonderful County. Let us pray for one another. Fr. Fimian wanted me to mention a note of thanks to Mr. Harlan at the Harlan Family Christmas Tree Farm, in Nokesville. Seems the good man in charge was moved by the Fimian presentation and gave him a free tree for Christmas. Cut it fresh from the ground. Doesn t get any better than that. Many thanks to the Harlan Family. Let us always pray for those who suffer from their afflictions and their families.
