August 12, 2018 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Parish Affiliation Q. I have been encouraged to be registered with a parish. Why is it highly encouraged? A. There are several reasons as to why parishioners should be registered with a parish: 1) It allows the pastor to know who he is to provide ministry to; 2) For census purposes, registered parishioners allow us to know the demographics of our community and family size so that proper spiritual programs can be planned to meet the needs of all parishioners; 3) Every registered family will receive donation envelopes so as to assist in the continuation of ministry. In addition, it is beneficial for the parishioner at the end of the year, if they are registered and use the envelopes, to receive a Financial Contribution Statement for their taxes; 4) Please know that all information provided to the parish regarding your registration remains in and only with the parish. This information is not shared, unless a Letter of Affiliation is needed. A Letter of Affiliation is required for sponsorship eligibility for the Sacraments and if you wish to receive the Sacraments outside the parish of affiliation, for example, the Sacrament of Matrimony. If you are new to the Parish, or not so new, we ask that you register with the Parish. Please fill out the form below and drop it in the collection basket. ****************************************************** Name: Phone #: Address: Email: I worship here & would like to register. The Beginning of Everything Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation, especially a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven -sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives His flesh as life for the world. I am the bread of life (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord Psalm 34

Page 5 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 12, 2018 Parish & Community Events/News Fifteen Random Stewardship Ideas 1. Invite a single friend over for a meal. 2. Turn off the TV, phone, and computer, and spend an hour devoted to someone you love. 3. Attend an extra Mass on a weekday this month. 4. Abstain from something you like: meat, a latte, a cold drink, on Fridays and save the money for a charity. 5. Take your rosary with you for an early morning walk. 6. Recycle more. 7. Think of a charity which is amply blessed at Christmas. Remember it with a gift mid-year. 8. Each day, say a prayer for one of the world s trouble spots. 9. Surprise an old friend with a phone call. 10. Buy or pick a flower for someone without a reason. 11. Take your family to a farmer s market if in season. 12. Stop for a moment during your busy day and enjoy an ice cream cone or other favorite treat. 13. If you hear a great homily, tell the homilist. 14. Splurge on some produce and buy enough to share with someone in need. 15. On occasion, try turning your prayer before meals into a spontaneous prayer of thanks, using your own words. Diocesan Pilgrimage On Saturday, October 29th, the Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC takes place. Bishop DiMarzio will celebrate Mass at the shrine for the pilgrims from our diocese. For additional information about the Pilgrimage or to make transportation arrangements, please call Deacon Joe Freda from St. Mel Church at 917-862-0636. He is our Deanery representative for the pilgrimage. St. Kevin Mustard Seed Nicaragua Mission The political situation in Nicaragua remains dire. This has prevented us from going as a parish team to be with the children and young adults of Mustard Seed Communities this year. But our prayers, for the children and the nation of Nicaragua, remain critical. While Margaret and Tony are not able to host the prayer gathering at their home this coming week, they will be praying with you remotely on Tuesday, August 14, at 6:30 p.m. Wherever you are, please join them for 15 minutes of prayer at this time. Please remember that the needs of the children and their caregivers are more significant now than ever before. If you can help them, please visit http:// www.mustardseed.com/goto/stk to make a donation. ( P.S. Prayer will resume at Margaret and Tony's home on August 21st. Contact them if you need their address mmbrower1@yahoo.com) Save the Dates - Join Father John Costello
