MARCH 3, 2019 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today s gospel gives us two messages on how we will identify ourselves with Jesus. Always remember that our Christian Religion is so unique because it is not a set of rules and commandments, but it is centered on Jesus, a person. We must become other Christs, becoming one with Jesus thinking and one with his Body and Divinity in Holy Communion, the center of our life. From our union with His body, we become children of divine light, and we can then remove ourselves from hypocrisy and blindness in dealing with others, with simplicity of heart without deceit or selfishness. The second message of Jesus is a suggestion on how we can discover if we are walking in step with Jesus. Because of the multitude of our sins we get panicky and think that God is not inside our hearts. Jesus suggests that we look at our lives. Surely we deeply regret our sins, but Jesus wants us to be positive, not negative. Jesus wants us to look at the totality of all the good we have done, and then breathe hard and remember that in confession all our sins are erased, only the good actions, sacrifices, prayers, alms remain. So let s spring ahead with joy and trust into Paradise. The Holy Season of Lent, which prepares us to celebrate the most solemn Christian feast of Easter, starts this coming Ash Wednesday, March 6, when we Catholics mark our foreheads with blessed ashes as the external sign of our inner determination to correct our faults, to make penance for our sins, and to achieve a closer union with Jesus, our Eternal Love. We Catholics renew this commitment in these 40 days of Lent to Jesus, and we solemnly express such commitment in the renewal of our baptismal promises at Easter. You are very much familiar with my list about becoming a SAINT with the capital S : Sacrifice of the Mass, every day during Lent. Scripture reading, a chapter of the Bible a day! Spiritual practices, such as going to confession, Daily Rosary, Stations of the Cross, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Search for and Save your friends not attending Church any more. Serve the poor by volunteering at Caritas, Bethesda House, or the St. Vincent De Paul. Suffering through sacrifices as suggested below Sweets: no cookies, pies, candies until Easter. Sausages, Salami, Prosciutto and other delicacies, no! Smoking Forbidden for 40 days (aaaargh!!) Sober for 40 days from alcohol (eat lasagna with Coca Cola). Shows: No TV, movies, operas, parties (except St. Patrick's Day and St. Joseph s Day). Sex: a renewed commitment to say no to X or R-rated movies; no pornographic magazines/internet; no sexual or racial harassment; no suggestive talk. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. On days of fast one full meal and two lesser meals are allowed. Eating between meals is not permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year. Naturally, as you well know, no meat is allowed on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Masses on Ash Wednesday are 7:30 am, 9 am, 10:30 am, Noon, 4 pm, 5:30 pm, and 7:30 pm (Vietnamese). Also on Ash Wednesday, we will take up the annual Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection illuminates the way for the people of the region by helping Catholic Organizations that offer affordable shelter, training for seminarians, pastoral care and catechesis. Your donation on Ash Wednesday helps restore the Church and build the future in the aftermath of Soviet rule. Please be generous in the collection. To learn more about the important projects funded by this collection, visit www.usccb.org/ccee Last Sunday, we asked you dear parishioners to submit commitment cards for the Catholic Faith Appeal and the Offertory Campaign. If you have not done so, we ask you to complete a commitment card and drop it in the collection basket or mail it to the parish office. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Tickets for the dinner are available in the Parish Office. *No Cost (Donations Appreciated) DIOCESE OF VENICE IN FLORIDA February, 2019 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Each year the Church throughout the U.S. takes up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. For almost 75 years the Church in that part of Europe lived under a repressive communist government that restricted both religious and cultural practice. The region faced multiple wars that left a suffering people in their wake. Still today many are rebuilding from this difficult past. In Central and Eastern Europe, for almost three quarters of a century, the Catholic faith was illegal or restricted, so atheism grew stronger and family values deteriorated. Today the Church is working to rebuild these values. Through your generosity to this Collection you give men and women an option to protect life, make it possible to create homes, to provide food and necessities for their families. With housing, the faithful receive help with child care, employment, and tools necessary to establish stable living and working situations for themselves and their children. The Diocese of Venice will be taking up a Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe on Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019. Please give generously to support those who strive to learn and live their faith. May God continue to bless you for the good you do! I take this opportunity to extend to you my continued consideration as well as my prayers on this Ash Wednesday, as we begin our Lenten Journey. Sincerely yours in Christ, + Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida SPRING FOWARD Don t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour next Saturday night, March 9 FR. FAUSTO FESTA ITALIANA Saturday, March 9, 2019 Join us for Italian cuisine, Wine & Beer, & Dancing! Tickets will be available in the Parish Office. $25 Donation P F P I M 2019 That Christian communities, especially those who are persecuted, feel that they are close to Christ and have their rights respected. St. Martha Service Club is collecting trial size toiletries during Lent. The items will be used to make Blessing Bags for the Resurrection House which is a non-profit, faith-based organization that serves as a day resource center to the homeless of Sarasota County. Please turn in donations to the Parish Office or the upstairs Religious Education office.

Let us recover and deepen our enthusiasm, that delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing, even when it is in tears that we must sow. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LECTIO DIVINA Thursdays during Lent Starting on March 7th Br. Geenen Hall at 6:15 p.m. Those who listen to the Word of God and act upon it will enter the Kingdom of God Lectio Divina is the ancient way of praying and listening to The Word of God.
