The Blessing Word KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MONSIGNOR PETER BLESSING COUNCIL #5273 #5273 Worthy Brothers, I pray you and your families are well It has been a busy month since we last met. We had a 1 st and 2 nd degree exemplification in which we welcomed 6 new brothers with more still waiting in the wings to join our council. We also had 4 of our brothers attain their 3 rd degree on January 29 th so congratulations to them. Our next meeting is Monday February 11, 2013. MSGR PETER E. BLESSING,, L.L.D., D.D., V.G. Our Council s Namesake C A L E N D A R O F E V E N T S FEBRUARY SQUIRES BUSINESS MEETING PLACE: SSJP PARISH CENTER CLASSROOM DATE: FRIDAY, 2/1/2013 TIME: 7:00PM FEBRUARY COUNCIL MEETING PLACE: SVP PARISH HALL DATE: MONDAY, 2/11/2013 TIME: 7:30PM MARCH SQUIRES BUSINESS MEETING PLACE: SSJP PARISH CENTER CLASSROOM DATE: FRIDAY, 3/1/2013 TIME: 7:00PM MARCH COUNCIL MEETING PLACE: SVP PARISH HALL DATE: MONDAY, 3/11/2013 TIME: 7:30PM Also since last we met, the General Assembly in their infinite wisdom has decided to pass a bill recognizing same sex marriage. I called my rep and voiced my opposition, but he is apparently more concerned with voting a party line than representing his constituents, I will do whatever I can to make him regret that decision. The next big thing we can do is to call our State senators and tell them we oppose same sex marriage. Just because a minority of approximately 4 percent of the population want to legitimize their lifestyle by trying to co-opt the term marriage. Marriage is a religious sacrament; the laws we have regarding marriage were enacted to protect children, which can only be produced in the union between a man and a woman, Walls do not just fall down in one fell swoop gentleman. It is the erosion of the sediment over time that holds all of it together, that is when it falls. Beginning Monday February 4 th there is a presentation of Fr. Robert Barron s Catholicism at St Vincent De Paul at 7 PM. I hope to see you there. Finally I would just like to say that we are being attacked and our fundamental rights are being usurped. Learn about our rights and our faith Gentlemen, it is our duty and obligation to do so. God Bless and Vivat Jesu! John Pizzo, Grand Knight columbusknight@verizon.net MSGR. Ash Wednesday is on February 13th. Easter will be March 31st. I would like to highlight some things about Lent in this Chaplain's Report. Lent means "Spring Time" which is a welcome thought as we trudge through winter. It is meant to be a time when we do "Spring Cleaning" in our spiritual life and commit ourselves in a deeper way then perhaps ever before to loving God and our neighbor. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph #540 it is mentioned that Jesus, Our Lord, fasted 40 days and 40 nights in preparation for his public ministry. We try to follow Jesus' example in everything. "By the solemn fourty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert." There is the regular rather minimal fast and abstinence on certain days of Lent which you will be reminded of in your parishes. But then there is the choice of extra things we can and should do in order to draw closer to heaven and further God's Kingdom by our lives. The number one "fast" we should do is "fast from sinning." This could lead us to some concrete decisions. Perhaps we should spend less time watching sporting events and more time chipping away at work projects around our homes. Perhaps instead of spending so much personal time on our computers we should try to help our children with their homework assignment or at least spend more time talking to our children. There are many other fasts we can do. We should also think about ways we are spending time in prayer. How is God calling us to deepen in our prayer and thus in our relationship with Christ. Seeing our prayer as talking to Jesus and listening to Jesus makes it a great adventure. Finally, we should make an effort to be generous with our money and our time. The needs our great. Parish priests can tell you there are many people hurting financially. Some can't pay their rent or the heating bills. Perhaps we can help especially through our parishes. So, dear Brothers, let us join our Lord Jesus and advance the Kingdom of God by our Lenten practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. You will not be disappointed. Rev. Michael Kelley Chaplain Msgr. Blessing Council #5273 When thou shalt pour out thy soul to the hungry, and shalt satisfy the afflicted soul then shall thy light rise up in the darkness, and thy darkness shall be as the noonday. - Isaiah 58:10 (DRA) Page 2

Bishop s Call to Action! Bishop Tobin recently wrote a piece in the RI Catholic last month regarding homosexual marriage. He said: As the General Assembly takes up the question of permitting same sex marriage once again, I urge members of the Diocese of Providence and other concerned citizens to contact their state representatives and senators immediately to encourage them to stand firm; to protect the traditional values of marriage and family and reject same-sex marriage. Dear friends, now is the time to practice your faith and let your voice be heard! Commanding them: When you shall do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery is come: if it be a man child, kill it: if a woman, keep it alive. Squires News ` SAINT OF THE MONTH Saint Blaise Hello, Brother Squires! OLUME 3 ISSU OLUME 12 3 ISSU 12 I believe in this month we can briefly take focus off of membership and turn it to something else - the advancement program. We also gained two new counselors this month - one of which has been made counselor to help us with the advancement program. What the advancement program is is a way of rewarding Squires for their accomplishments. It allows us to rise through ranks, including Page, Lancer and more, and eventually obtain the prestigious title of Squire of the Body of Christ. We will learn more about the program while we go through it. God Bless, Chief Squire Josh Fidler World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro Many Catholics might remember Saint Blaise's feast day because of the Blessing of the Throats that took place on this day. Two candles are blessed, held slightly open, and pressed against the throat as the blessing is said. Saint Blaise's protection of those with throat troubles apparently comes from a legend that a boy was brought to him who had a fishbone stuck in his throat. The boy was about to die when Saint Blaise healed him. Very few facts are known about Saint Blaise. We believe he was a bishop of Sebastea in Armenia who was martyred under the reign of Licinius in the early fourth century. The legend of his life that sprang up in the eighth century tell us that he was born in to a rich and noble family who raised him as a Christian. After becoming a bishop, a new persecution of Christians began. He received a message from God to go into the hills to escape persecution. Men hunting in the mountains discovered a cave surrounded by wild animals which were sick. Among them Blaise walked unafraid, curing them of their illnesses. Recognizing Blaise as a bishop, they captured him to take him back for trial. On the way back, he talked a wolf into releasing a pig that belonged to a poor woman. When Blaise was sentenced to be starved to death, the woman, in gratitude, sneaked into the prison with food and candles. Finally Blaise was killed by the governor. Pope John Paul II announced the institution of World Youth Day in December, 1985, as an annual gathering of youth and young adults for prayer, worship and celebration of the Catholic faith. The event is observed every three years at an international gathering. THE PURPOSE OF WORLD YOUTH DAY IS THR EEFOLD 1. Putting Trust in the Young World Youth Day is a coming together of young adults from the four corners of the world. 2. Gathering Together World Youth Day is a time to put trust in the world's youth. A calling for the world's youth to come together as one people. 3. Meeting the International World on a Human Level It is still a marvel in this the 21st Century to exchange with others and to be a part of an international experience. Contact Us Please feel free to contact the USCCB World Youth Day Office with any questions you may have pertaining to World Youth Day Rio 2013. Phone: (202) 541-3044 E-mail: wyd@usccb.org Blaise is the patron saint of wild animals because of his care for them and of those with throat maladies. Take time as Saint Blaise did to find out how you can help wild animals. Find out what is being done to support and protect the wildlife in your area. There is wildlife everywhere, even in cities. Even a birdfeeder can help God's creatures survive. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Sanctify unto me every firstborn that openeth the womb among the children of Israel, as well of men as of beasts: for they are all mine. And Moses said to the people: Remember this day in which you came forth out of Egypt, and out of the house of bondage for with a strong hand hath the Lord brought you forth out of this place that you eat no leavened bread - Exodus 13:1-3 (DRA)
