Welcome and Announcements Prelude Siesta E. Laurens Choral Introit Call To Worship Come, let us mingle our memories and our hopes together, for today is a special day. People: Today we celebrate All Saints' Day. Saints are made by listening to the call of God and saying, "Yes." People: Hidden in a whisper or proclaimed in a hurting world, the call of God touches our hearts. And we give thanks for all who have attended to the call. People: Heroes and nobodies, the ordinary and the talented, the walking and the wounded. Give thanks for the ones who've gone before us and made it easier for us to believe in God People: And live the life of faith. Hymn No. 708 Rejoice In God s Saint s A Time for Children Prayer of Confession Let us join together in this prayer: All: O God, on this day devoted to the living memory of the martyrs of the church and to the celebration of the witness of loved ones and friends, we confess that we have mixed feelings. Recalling the faithfulness and courage of Christian men and women who risked, and often sacrificed, their very lives in your Son's service both inspires us and makes us feel wistful. We know we do not measure up to them, but we feel that we should -and that we might have, except for bad breaks or the interference of others. Most patient God, help us put an end to this self-deception. Help us to forget what we might have been, what we might have done. Remind us that even the most conspicuous martyrs of the church, even the bravest saints we have known and loved, were ordinary people, subject to the same mixed feelings about their own worth and potential. Then help us concentrate on the present and the future: on the things we might yet do, the persons we might yet be, in Christ's service, beginning today. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving for All Saints Day ~1 November 2009 The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. People: People: All: Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to our Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. God of Abraham and Sarah, God of Miriam and Moses, God of Joshua and Deborah, God of Ruth and David, God of the priests and the prophets, God of Mary and Joseph, God of the apostles and the martyrs, God of our mothers and our fathers, God of our children to all generations. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are You, and blessed is Your Son Jesus Christ. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which He gave Himself up for us, He took bread, gave thanks to You, broke the bread, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. When the supper was over He took the cup, gave thanks to You, gave it to His disciples and said: Drink from this, all of you; for this is My blood of the new covenant, poured out for You and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as You drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of these, Your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, as a holy and living sacrifice in union with Christ s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. All: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. All: Pour out Your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and fruit of the vine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by His blood. Renew our communion with all your saints, especially those whom we name before you. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witness, strengthen us to run with perseverance the race that is set us, looking to Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith. By your Spi9rit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.
