ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC CHURCH Archdiocese of Portland 9905 SW McKenzie St Tigard, OR 97223 Phone 503-639-4179 Fax 503-624-2364 ww.satigard.org Parish Office Hours/ Horario De Oficina Monday thru Friday/Martes a Viernes 8:30AM 5PM Tuesday thru Thursday /Martes a Jueves Evening / Tardes By Appointment Saturday/Sábado By Appointment Sunday /Domingo By Appointment Greetings, I hope you are well and I pray that you are happy. Take a moment and list all of the people you can t stand, you do not get along with, people who get on your nerves, or even people you wish you never knew. In other words, who are your enemies? Jesus says Love your enemies. Each person you put on your list, hopefully it is not very long, needs to be loved. What? It is important to note that we need to understand the meaning of love. In the English language we use love for everything. I love my parents, my brothers and sisters, my wife, my husband. I love my material possessions. Think about love in that context. I do not love my wife or husband in the same way I love my children or grandchildren. Yet in each of those situations we say I love you. Now the kind of love Jesus is speaking of is what we call Agape. This love has a certain meaning. Every human being deserves respect. You do not have to be good friends with every person but you must show respect. So two things to consider: As a child of our God who is merciful, so to must you be. My very relationship with God calls me to live in the ways of God s love for you and me. When people look at you and me what everyone must see is God s mercy. You cannot say that I am a Christian and do not live a Christ like life. Secondly, I do not need to get wrapped up in hate because God is the center of my life. God is my treasure. All of my stuff is not in control of my life. Many times enemies are enemies because of some issue or over something. When God is my treasure I do not allow anything to take me away from that focus. The love we speak of brings peace, calm and joy. Our hate can control us and keep us captive. GOD's love is freeing. Love your enemies, it is easier than you think. Have a great week Your friend, Fr. John Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 24, 2019

We may think we have all we need, that we have been given our path for life. But consider the many Bible stories in which our Heavenly Father alters current assignments: Gideon from farmer to general, Mary from peasant girl to Mother of Christ, Paul from local rabbi to world evangelist, Peter from fisherman to leader of the first Church, David from shepherd to King of Israel. We may be comfortable with what we are doing, and if so, we certainly may continue our good works. But God makes reassignments. God may call you to do something more or different. Be open to a new command. He assures us we will never face the future without His help. So embrace the change He wants in you. Don Lane 3
