Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School "St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming students in the Catholic faith to excel in academics and service to others." Hello SPSL community members. We have had some very busy and fun past few weeks. One of the more fun and exciting days for some of our students is the 100th day of school. This year, it was so fun to see our kindergarten students dress up as centenarians or as people who are 100 years or older. What was even just as fun as the students were all of the kindergarten teachers and teacher assistants also joining in on the fun and dressing up too. The kindergarteners also brought in the 100th Day projects they were working on and had a great time at their party. The first grader class also joined in on the 100th day of school fun with taking 100 steps and I was very blessed to mark the 100th day of school by putting up the 100th elephant in the 1st grade hall marking all the days leading up to this day. Also, on Saturday, February 16th, the local 2018 MATHCOUNTS competition, sponsored by the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers, was held. MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide middle school mathematics competition held in various places in the United States. St. Pius X / St. Leo was well represented in the completion and we had many students qualify to represent our school. Those students were Aiden Brink, Trevor Gregg, Caleb Hans, Patrick McMahon, Maggie Morris, Alex ten Bensel, Will Strehle and Peter Sullivan. Approximately 200 "mathletes" from 25 local schools competed, and in the team competition, SPSL finished in the top half. In the individual tests, Trevor placed in the top 20%, Peter in the top 25% and Caleb and Patrick were in the top 30%. We also want to thank the SPSL alumni students who did a great job volunteering to help coach the MATHCOUNTS team this year. Thank you to Jon Schroeder, Connor Gregg, Rylee Gregg, and also our 8th grade student coach Will Brewster. Congratulations to our coaches and students for their success with the MATHCOUNTS program this year. I also want to thank all of our teachers for their preparation of our students in all subjects and socially and spiritually. It is because of our school educators commitment to excellence that we have been able to share with you all of our successes over the past weeks in our school s Sunday bulletin section. In the past few weeks we have reported on our students successes in many academic competitions, a successful Catholic School s Week, our student successes in Honor Choir, Theatre Club performances, and that we had over 25% of our 8th graders receive academic scholarships to our Catholic high schools. It was amazing to hear that one of our high schools awarded the most scholarship money they have ever given to one school in their history. Excitingly, these successes are a small snapshot of all that is happening at our school and we will share much more in the future. I cannot help but be impressed by our school and these successes continue to reinforce why SPSL is such a special community and is continued evidence of the wonderful teachers we have at our school. Thank you for your love and support. Go Panthers! St. Pius X/St. Leo School If you have children in grades Pre-Kindergarten (3 year old program has a waiting list.) 4 year olds to Grade 8 that you are thinking about sending to our school for the next school year, please call our school office at 402-551-6667 to set up a time to come and visit, and, then register your child/ren when you decide to come to our school. In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman I am so mad, I will never forgive them for doing this to me! I hate that person so much, I wish they were dead! These may seem like very extreme emotional expressions, but they reflect the reality of today s society. Our lack of forgiveness and our lack of restraint for those who oppose our point of view is out of control. The primary reason this has happened in our society is that we have turned away from God. In our gospel today, Jesus is teaching us the correct way to live our lives. His teaching may seem extreme to the way we live, but His words are truth and life. They are what we should be doing. Jesus said to his disciples: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. He goes on to say, do to others as you would have them do to you, and be merciful. Jesus tells us to stop judging and condemning others. Most important of all He teaches us, forgive and you will be forgiven. Once we start living our lives as Jesus teaches, the graces He will bestow on us will be unbelievable. Paul in our second reading speaks to us about we have two spirits within us, an earthly spirit and heavenly one. Jesus is teaching us to live our lives in the heavenly Holy Spirit. We must remember for those who live in God s grace the Lord is kind and merciful. He pardons our iniquities and heals our ills if we ask. He redeems His children from destruction and crowns them with His love, kindness, and compassion. St. Leo Knights of Columbus HELP! Intentional Be intentional about everything in your prayers. Dream big and be childlike in asking for what you want. Mary Consecrate yourself and your parish to Mary, the first evangelist. Prayer Jesus taught His disciples to pray by example. The disciples were witness to Jesus. Pray and be persistent in prayer. Listen Listen to God s voice in Scriptures, in the world around us, and in our brothers and sisters. Eucharist Center your life on the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith. Ask God to give your family an understanding of the Real Presence. Everything flows from the power of the Eucharist. Omaha, NE l 09
