NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Sunday, August 6, 2017 10:45 a.m. As We Gather We face so many decisions about food these days. Go organic. Go gluten free. Go low carb. Go vegan. Go GMO free. Our culture is deeply concerned about what sort of food we put in our bodies. While what sort of food we put into our bodies is an important concern, Jesus compels us to consider a different kind of food. Jesus said, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Jesus feeds five thousand people, but he yearned to do more than simply fill their stomachs. The prophet Isaiah wrote, Come, everyone who thirsts... incline your ear, and come to Me; hear, that your soul may live. Opening Song (Remain standing) How Great is Our God C. Tomlin, E. Cash & J. The Word of the Lord Old Testament Isaiah 55:1 8 1 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. 6 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel (Please stand) Matthew 14:13 21 13 Now when Jesus heard [about the death of John], he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves. 16 But Jesus said, They need not go away; you give them something to eat. 17 They said to him, We have only five loaves here and two fish. 18 And he said, Bring them here to me. 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 3

Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Prayer of Confession (Please stand) L: Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sins to Him, and ask His gracious forgiveness. C: We now confess to You, O God Almighty, that we are sinful by nature and by deed. We have not always put You first in our lives. We have used Your name in ways that did not honor You. We have been careless in our devotion and have not always honored those in authority over us. We have done violence to others in word and deed and have not always kept our thoughts, words, and deeds pure and honorable. We have taken what is not ours and have spoken that which is not helpful or true. Have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins, and bring us to life everlasting. Amen. Assurance of Forgiveness L: The almighty and merciful Lord grants pardon and peace to all who humbly confess their sin. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen! Thanks be to God.
