FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 14, 2017 THE CROWN A MOTHER S DAY PRAYER I thank you, Creator of us all, for my mother. I thank you that she gave me life and nurtured me all those years. She gave me my faith, helping me to know you and to know Jesus and his ways. She taught me how to love and how to sacrifice for others. She taught me that it was okay to cry and that I should always tell the truth. Bless her with the graces she needs and which you want to give her today. Help her to feel precious in your eyes today and to know that I love her. Give her strength and courage, compassion and peace. Bless her this day with your love.

HAPPY MOTHER S DAY! Happy Mother s Day to all mothers! To be inclusive we include our birth mothers, adopted mothers, stepmothers, foster mothers, mothers who gave up their child for adoption, surrogate mothers, godmothers, religious women and anyone who in any way shared a mother s love with another. I believe a mother s love reveals God s love to us. We usually think of God in the masculine gender. There is no gender in God. The feminine is every bit as much part of the divine as the masculine. The Bible was written within and to a patriarchal society. But even Scripture has many feminine images of God. In Isaiah 42:14 God is described as a mother in labor. Isaiah 66:13 describes God as a mother comforting her child. The Book of Wisdom describes God as Lady Wisdom. Proverbs, Sirach, and the Psalms all have feminine images of God. As we thank God for the gift of our mothers, we recognize the feminine side of God who made our mothers the way they are. Like God their love is unconditional. They are quick to forgive. They listen to us and comfort us. How wonderful that our God reveals divine love in our mothers. I cannot help but think of my own mother today, even though she went to live with God 27 years ago. One quality she gave me was to be a good listener. While my masculine side wants to fix things, she helped me learn listening is often more important than trying to fix things. We men have a hard time learning that. My Mom had many friends who would come to her because they knew her to be a good listener. My Mom always had a great deal of affection. I think that helped me develop a compassionate and softer side of my temperament. My Mom developed Alzheimer s disease in her final years. While that involves some painful and frustrating memories, there are also good ones. Near the end of her life her muscles atrophied and she could no longer feed herself. I remember feeding her ice cream her favorite when she would no longer want to eat anything. I reminded her she used to feed me, now it was my turn to feed her. Those were special moments that revealed to me the essence of what our lives are about: loving one another and feeding each other. Take time today to thank your mother and telling her why she is so special. If your mother has gone to be with God, remember we believe in the communion of the saints. She can hear you. Talk to her and ask her to pray for you. God bless all our mothers living and dead. Have a beautiful day! God of love, we thank you for the gift of our mothers. Thank you for helping them to bear us into this world. Thank you for inspiring them to nurture and teach us so much about you and about life. Bless our mothers who are still alive with good health and many more happy years. Bless our departed mothers with eternal life. May our lives reflect their divine love for us. Amen. Father Mike Ahlstrom

BOOKS FOR WOMEN OF THE PARISH This weekend, the Divine Infant Prolife Committee is again handing out books to the women of the parish as a token of our appreciation for nurturing life. The book we chose this year is titled Walking with Purpose by Lisa Brenninkmeyer. This book was available through Dynamic Catholic. Below is the summary given: Does your life feel out of control? Do you feel that you are doing so many things that you are doing none of them well? Lisa Brenninkmeyer understands how it feels when life is stuck on the spin cycle. As a mother of seven, she knows we don t just need to be told what kind of women we should be. We need some help getting there. Drawing from her own experience of balancing marriage, motherhood, and work inside and outside the home, Lisa helps you uncover the key to living a busy life with inner calm. What s the secret? Identifying key priorities, and doing first what matters most. With humor and wisdom, Lisa will help you: Stop striving and rest in God s uncondi tional love. Experience new hope in your marriage. Reach your child s heart. Create clarity in a cluttered home. Find friendships that go below the sur face and satisfy. Discover your passion and purpose. We hope that all of the women of our parish will take a copy home with them today. If anyone would like to contribute to help with the cost of the books there will be baskets available for donations. Happy Mother s Day to all the wonderful women of Divine Infant. MOTHERHOOD All mothers are working mothers. --Anonymous HOSPITALITY SUNDAY Next Sunday, May 21st after the 9:30am Mass. All bakers welcome and appreciated.

Grade 1 read a story about bubbles. This story gave facts about what makes a bubble, how the soapy water forms around air, and how the skin pulls itself into shape. The shape is usually a sphere which we are studying in Math. Then we went outside and had fun blowing bubbles. During the 5th grades Earth Science Unit they learned about the structure of the Earth and how natural effects such as weathering and volcanoes can change the Earth's surface. They had a chance to study volcanoes around the world and make a model of that volcano. There was true excitement by all as they made their volcanoes erupt.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the tabernacle. The word "genuflect" comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can't be genuflecting every thirty seconds during a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in procession entrusted with important symbols of the Lord's presence. So, a crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Communion stations do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord's presence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradition is standing; kneeling or genuflecting is a sign borrowed from old civic practice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I'm not running away, I'm yours, I'm here for you. This is what your genuflection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reservation of the Blessed Sacrament is visible to you: I'm yours. --Rev. James Field, (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. THE WAY Today we sense the apostles' trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord's promise that he is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God's wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. REUNION The DI Class of 1967 will be having their 50 yr reunion on Sept 9, 2017. To ensure a really fun successful event they are seeking help in locating classmates. please contact Ed Gemkow edward@gemkow.net or Karen (House) Renn ker53@comcast.net with their contact info to include email addresses as soon as possible.
