SHEPHERD 2017-2018 Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, School, & Child Care 6914 Wurzbach Rd. San Antonio, TX 78240 210-614-3742 ShepherdLutheran.com Our mission: To lead people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus 0

Shepherd U Shepherd U is an exciting learning experience designed to fill in the gaps in spiritual formation as well as help people take the next step in spiritual growth and sharpening life skills. A bonus with each group will be the opportunity to develop friendships with others in the group. Shepherd U has something for EVERYBODY! No previous Bible knowledge will be expected or assumed. Please contact Equipping Ministry Director Alice Klement for added information, alice@shepherdlutheran.com, 210-614-3742 x 511 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 101 Discover LUTHER, who? James Bowes If you don t have a Lutheran background, if you were never confirmed in the Lutheran faith, or if you wish you knew more about Christian beliefs from a Lutheran point of view, this group is for you. This course includes an introduction to basic Lutheran (Christian) beliefs and will expand to focus on the foundation of the Reformation: GRACE ALONE, FAITH ALONE, SCRIPTURE ALONE. The Next Step Pastor Chris Kennedy, Alice Klement This group is designed for people who are ready to take the next step to church membership as well as for those who would just like to know more about the congregation. Topics include the culture and history of Shepherd of the Hills, the history and beliefs of Lutherans, and God s plan for each of us. Little Ones to Him Belong: The First Faith Step Cindy Miller This is a group especially designed for parents of children ages 1-3. In only 3 sessions you will be given lots of ideas for fostering faith growth in your home. 1

God s Word is a Treasure: My First Bible Pastor Doug Bielefeldt This is a group for 2 nd graders and their parents. However, if you have a 3 rd or 4 th grader who didn t attend in the past, you are welcome to join this group. Through a period of four weeks, parents and their children will take a tour of the Bible. The four weeks culminate with the parents presenting a Bible to their children. Digging Deeper James Bowes In LUTHER, who? James led the group in an exploration of basic Christian doctrine. During Digging Deeper, he will leave the basic and go deeper into the teachings of Scripture and their meaning for the 21 st Century Christian. LUTHER, who? is not a prerequisite for Digging Deeper. Parent/Teen Talk Randy Pollock Parents and Teens really communicating? Sound impossible? Not when under the direction of gifted counselor Randy Pollock. All high schoolers and their parents are encouraged to attend. Director of Student Ministry Nick Arnold will suspend the regular high school group in order to make it possible for all to attend Parent/Teen Talk. 201 Life Skills Energizing Parents Principal Sue Gary It s been called the most difficult job in the world. If you re a parent, you ll appreciate this opportunity to renew and recharge while learning to increase the energy in your family tenfold by changing your focus from a negative thought to a positive thought. 2

Transforming Work Gary Larsen This is a group designed for Christians who want to make a greater difference at work. The program focuses on the work experiences of participants, learning new skills, and the time to reflect, pray, and try things out between sessions to create an experience that will change the way you work. Participants can also connect to course content throughout the workweek through an accompanying app. Session Titles include: Why does work matter? How can I do good work? How can I flourish at work? How can I influence the culture of my workplace? How can I improve relationships at work? How can I tackle workplace issues with Biblical principles? How can I remain fruitful over the long-term? Embracing Masculinity: A Men s Group Jeremiah Fern Ready, Set, Think! Starting with the premise that our culture is at war with masculinity, this class will challenge and inspire you to embrace God s masculine design and to live contrary to those who hate what God called, very good. Jeremiah will facilitate an exploration of Scripture around the masculine vocations. We will discover what it is that was very good and how we might live that out. Men s Group continued Jeremiah Fern Taking direction from the Embracing Masculinity class, this group will explore ways in which God is calling them to serve in their everyday lives. The Power of We Rob and Claudette Nichols Pastor Keith and Marilyn Fox How do some marriages keep getting stronger, regardless of the circumstances? It s the power of WE! It s being one flesh in attitude and action. This uplifting study offers couples of all ages and anniversaries a Scriptural understanding of WE and practical, dayto-day wisdom to protect the marriage relationship and keep it alive and growing. 3

The Quest: A Women s Ministry Group Sarah DeYoung In this six-week excursion with Jesus, noted author, Beth Moore, uses questions from Scripture to lead you into intimacy with the One who knows you best. Learn to dig into the Word, to respond to the questions of God, and to bring your questions before Him. Let the question mark be the map that points you into a closer relationship with the Father. Women s Group continued As an outcome of the Women s Study, The Quest, it is anticipated that several new groups and studies will form. Information will be shared in the announcement page of the bulletin. 301 Pastor s Class The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem Pastor Chris Kennedy Take a fresh look at the Christmas story by studying the places where key events took place in the infancy narratives. Through this study, you'll discover new applications of the Christmas Gospel to your life. Listening to God s Voice: The Minor Prophets Pastor Chris Kennedy The 12 Old Testament books of the Minor Prophets are among the least read books of the Bible. It's hard to locate and pronounce some of them, much less understand their message! The role of prophet may be just what our world needs today. We'll consider the calling and message of 12 men who spoke boldly for God. The Power of Prayer Pastor Chris Kennedy One of the great mysteries of the faith is how prayer works. Can our prayers change God's mind? Can prayers of faith move mountains? What about when prayers seem to go unanswered? A study of prayer is really a study of the relationship between God and people. 4

Shepherd U Faculty Pastor Doug Bielefeldt serves as the pastor to our School and Child Care. He has been a part of the ministry team at Shepherd of the Hills since 2001; prior to that, he enjoyed a 23 year career at USAA. He has been married to Nancy for 38 years. Sarah enjoys meeting new women and connecting with them in Bible Study. Jeremiah Fern has known the Lord for 30 years now. He has come to learn that he s a sinner saved by grace, just like you. Having grown up Pentecostal and then meandering through less exuberant denominations, he came to find many Lutheran doctrines to be a more accurate depiction of God s revealed truth. He works for Cisco Systems running a global engineering team and is married with 5 children. He has degrees in business and education and enjoys motorcycles, diving, hiking, dancing, old cars, and too many other things he doesn t have time for. 5

He is blessed with a wife, Ashley, and three children: Caleb, 4; Ethan, 2; and Emma, 6 months. Alice Klement s title, Director of Equipping Ministry, comes from the Scripture passage, Equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:12. She finds great delight in helping people connect with small groups and with the ministries for which God has designed them. Alice began her career as a teacher in Lutheran schools. An opportunity to serve on the parish side of congregation life brought her to Shepherd in 1994. Dr. Gary Larsen was born and raised in Grand Forks, ND. He earned a PhB from the University of North Dakota, an MSW from the University of Minnesota, an MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a PhD from The Ohio State University. A retired colonel, he spent 25 years as a mental health provider, aviation psychology consultant, physician educator, management consultant and senior leader of medical programs in the US Air Force. Subsequent to his Air Force career he was the senior vice president of operations for a nationwide medical company and was on the faculty of the Executive MBA program at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is currently an independent executive consultant. 6
