THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 16, 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Some years ago the Passionist priest Alfred Wilson wrote a splendid book on the Sacrament of Penance that has helped many Catholics. He entitled it Pardon and Peace after its chief benefits for those who take advantage of it. The book addressed itself to sincere believers in easily graspable terms and offered them plain, realistic advice. After admitting that confessing our sins is far from the average person s preferred tasks, he wrote that It is a pity that we need the confessional; if we were sinless we should not need it; but we are not sinless and therefore we do need it. Because our bodies get sick, we need hospitals. Because our souls get sick, we need the confessional. Christ our King is coming the Lamb whom John proclaimed. Make straight his way. SAINT JOSEPH/ST. PETER COMMUNAL ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE DECEMBER 17 Continuing with the comparison of the sacrament to sensible care of our health, Father Wilson said: No one goes to the doctor or the dentist for fun, unless he is mad. No one goes to Confession for fun. From the nature of the case, confession cannot be easy. The result, not the process, of confession is consoling. AT ST. PETER THE APOSTLE CHURCH This year s Advent Penance Service for both Saint Joseph and St. Peter the Apostle Parishes will be held on Monday, December 17 at 7:30 pm at St. Peter the Apostle Church located at 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge, NJ 07661. The clergy of both parishes will be available to hear confessions. It is important for us to be aware that those who keep away from the confessional are forgetting a most needed gift of God. Father Wilson points out that Catholics do not enjoy Confession heaven preserve us from those who do! but they prefer it, humiliating as it is, to endless, dulling soul-ache and progressive demoralization of character and personality. Above all, we should regard Confession as what it truly is: a beautiful way of getting closer to the Lord. With all the care a good priest should have, Father Wilson urges us: Approach the Sacrament in a spirit of tranquility and boundless trust. You are going to your Divine Friend of Friends, Who only asks you to lay bare your wounds that He may heal them. He is overjoyed that you are coming to Him you must believe that. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This Monday evening at 7:30 we will have our Advent Penance service (see above opposite). This year s will take place at St. Peter s in River Edge. After a short prayer service, the priests of both our parishes will be available to hear your confessions, and so help you prepare to celebrate a joyous Christmas. JOHN 1:1 Msgr. David Hubba 3
