From the Senior Minister Can You Hear Me Now? Last Sunday the sermon was entitled Can You Hear Me Now? We talked about how God has used angels and prophets in the past to communicate His message to mankind. But when we get to the New Testament, we find that the responsibility of sharing the Gospel message of Christ belongs to every one of us who call ourselves Christian. The Great Commission to GO into all the world teaching and baptizing about Jesus is what God expects us to do as His ambassadors. 2 Corinthians tells us that we are His ambassadors entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation to a world around us. So in this season of Faith Promise (March 5 th is our commitment Sunday) we are emphasizing this great responsibility we have. Our mission team has selected the theme, Let the Earth Hear His Voice. I can t think of a better theme for us to get behind local and world wide missions. So the entire month of February we will be hearing from a different missionary speaker on Sunday morning Feb. 5 th Johnny Arnold from Tri-State Christian Camp in DeFuniak Springs. You certainly don t want to miss the incredible things our camp is doing to impact the lives of young people in North Florida and South Georgia. Feb. 12 th Seth McManus, a Junior at Johnson University of Florida, is preparing for overseas mission work. He has two mission opportunities we will hear about. One this spring in Cambodia working with Rapha House, and another this coming summer along the Ivory coast of Africa. You won t want to miss hearing from the next generation of world missionaries. Feb. 19 th Dr. Les Hardin, from Johnson University of Florida. We have heard from Dr. David Eubanks for the last three years, but this year Dr. Hardin will share the great things happening through our Bible College University here in Florida. Feb. 26 th David Fincher David is a retired preacher, most recently from a church in South Florida. David relocated to nearby Carrabelle last summer as he has been working on his sailboat getting it ready to leave for Saint Lucia Island this Spring. David has committed his heart to a brand new mission work on this sister island to the island of Barbados. March 5 th Commitment Sunday This is the Sunday we will receive pledge cards and tally them all up to see what our 2017 Faith Promise Pledge will look like. Remember, we don t ask you to sign anything. This is a pledge between you and God. Now Faith Promise is not the only thing going on this month. We have our annual Valentines Day Dinner, (Sunday Feb. 12 th @ 5pm), and our theme is A Picnic in the Park. We are going to do our very best to make this Valentine Banquet have something for the WHOLE family. The world has a definition of what LOVE is, but it is FAR from what the love of Christ looks like. And we also have a Men s Retreat over in DeFuniak Springs at Tri-State Christian Camp on Feb. 17-18. We are encouraging EVERY man at CCCC to invite another friend and lets make this year s Men s Retreat a kickoff to bigger and better Men s Ministry here at Capital City Christian Church. Lots Happening... See you Sunday, Allen G. Tri-State Christian Camp Valentine s Day Dinner Feb. 12, 5PM February 17-18 FAITH PROMISE
Communication From the Leadership Cleanliness is next to godliness Well that s probably in the Bible right maybe not. Thanks to John Wesley circa 1778 in a sermon he gave and I quote Being clean is a sign of spiritual purity or goodness, as in Don't forget to wash your ears-cleanliness is next to godliness. Now, I m sure Wesley meant well but I m not positive he knew moms would use this phrase from then to eternity on their children. Don t get me wrong I am quite certain there are many famous saying that people equate as being in the Bible. For example; Money is the Root of All Evil, or God Moves in Mysterious ways. I recently went looking into these popular saying to see if there are any truths in them. Enjoy! The following is an excerpt from an article entitled 10 popular Bible Verses That Aren t in the Bible, by Alecia Mackenzie The Bible, long debated as the bestselling book of all time, might also be one of the most quoted texts. But how much of what is cited as coming from the Old and New Testaments is actually in the Bible? Spare the rod, spoil the child -This could very well be a paraphrase of Proverbs 13:24, but the statement doesn t really exist in any translation of the Bible. The Bible verse actually reads: He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. Samuel Butler, a 17th century British poet, actually coined the phrase "spare the rod and spoil the child" in his satirical poem, Hudibras. "Money is the root of all evil" - This misquote is not too far off from the actual verse, found in 1 Timothy 6:10: For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. Blessed and highly favored - Paul, credited with writing many of the New Testament letters, never wrote to the churches in Corinth or Rome declaring Christians to be blessed and highly favored. As good as the phrase may sound; it's not in the Bible. "All things work together for good" - This is another passage in which context is key what things work together for whose good? Romans 8:28 reads in full: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. God moves in mysterious ways - This might be a universal confession among all Christians, but this phrase is stated nowhere in Scripture. Perhaps the phrase can be linked to Isaiah 55:8: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. Pride comes before the fall - This phrase often attributed to the Bible is almost correct. The actual verse, found in Proverbs 16:18, actually reads: Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. In summary, the next time I am tempted to pull out one of my favorite biblical verses, I think I will just consult the bible first. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt (Abraham Lincoln, not the Bible!)
