FOURTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME, JULY 8 TH 2018 Jesus is met with misgivings and rejection by his own relatives. Like them, we often resist the prophetic word because of an obstinacy of heart, rooted in self-pride which must give way to weakness and powerlessness. MASS INTENTIONS: Saturday, July 7 th - 5:00 p.m. Patrick Bernadine and Cynthia Addison-Bernadine - In thanksgiving Sunday, July 8 th 8:00 a.m. Andrée Raphael - In memoriam Requested by the Raphael family 11:00 a.m. The People of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish Denise Sullivan - For healing Requested by Kety Numa Iris John - In memoriam Requested by the Harrisons Dolores Mills - In memoriam Requested by Sylvia Zuleta Gertrude Chumiso-Brown - In memoriam Shawn Maynard - In memoriam Requested b the Maynard family Monday, July 9 th - 9:00 a.m. Aline Pauyo - In memoriam Tuesday, July 10 th - 9:00 a.m. Agnes Guy - In memoriam Requested by Jean Guy Wednesday, July 11 th - 9:00 a.m. Memorial of St. Benedict, Abbot Living and deceased members of the Jeanne Mance Guild Thursday, July 12 th - 9:00 a.m. Living and deceased members of the Rosary Society Friday, July 13 th - 9:00 a.m. Living and deceased members of the Legion of Mary Saturday, July 14 th - 9:00 a.m. BVM Yvonne Sherkness - In memoriam Requested by June Goggin OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY S READINGS First Reading They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel The people said: Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary? (Mark 6:1-6). Mother Theresa Do You Know? Can you describe the elements of the bas-relief sculpture? Answer in next week s bulletin. Wednesday, July 11 Memorial of Saint Benedict, Abbot. d. 547 Founder of the Order of Saint Benedict (OSB), the Benedictines. Answers to last week s questions This piece of sculpture is on the front of the baptismal font. The dove, its head surrounded by a halo, represents the Holy Spirit which we first receive at Baptism. The seven rays coming out of the halo represent the gifts of the Holy Spirit. God s love for us and our love for God aren t seasonal. We teach our children the importance of consistency in things that are important (e.g. brushing one s teeth). Praying in church is a necessary action for us, Catholics. The is the greatest prayer. Bring your children to on Sundays. We need to thank God.
