Transcription:

The Sabbath is not a fast, but a feast, a day for rejoicing in the works of a gracious God, and joy must be its temper throughout. Joy suits no person so much as a saint, and it becomes no season as well as a Sabbath. J.I. Packer O day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light, O balm of care and sadness, most beautiful, most bright, On you the high and lowly, through ages joined in tune, Sing Holy, holy, holy to the great God triune. Christopher Wordsworth Sunday feels odd without church in the morning. It s the time in the week when we take our bearings, and, if we miss it, we re just following our noses. Garrison Keillor Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

Order of Worship May 29, 2016 Gathering in God s Presence Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might; Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above, Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small; In all life Thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish but naught changeth Thee. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight; All praise we would render; O help us to see, Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee. Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise, Public Domain. CALL TO WORSHIP The Lord is risen! Congregation: He is risen indeed! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man, Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy, There is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow r, In love and purity.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise thy name, In earth and sky and sea; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, Blessed Trinity. Holy, Holy, Holy! words by Reginald Heber (1783-1826), tune by John B. Dykes 1861. Public Domain. CALL TO CONFESSION Prayer of Confession Eternal God, you do not change. You have revealed yourself to us in your Word. You call us to worship you in spirit and in truth. But we confess that we often worship not your true self but who we wish you to be. We too often ask you to bless what we do rather than seeking to do what you bless. Forgive us for seeking concessions when we should be seeking guidance. Forgive us when our worship shapes you into what we want instead of shaping us into what you want. Help us to meet you here, that we might bow before your unspeakable majesty and so live for you now and ever, in Christ. Amen. Silent Confession Assurance of Forgiveness Romans 5:8; Colossians 1:13-14; Romans 5:1, NIV God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, Feed me now and evermore; Bread of heaven, Feed me now and evermore. Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing waters flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my Strength and Shield. Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my Strength and Shield. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell's destruction, Land me safe on Canaan's side. Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee; Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee. Land me safe on Canaan's side Bid my anxious fears, bid my anxious fears Land me safe on Canaan's side Bid my anxious fears, bid my anxious fears, goodbye Don Chapman William Williams Words: Public Domain Music: 2000 Hearts to God Music, Inc. The Apostles Creed Christians, what do you believe? Congregation: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Children ages 3-5 are dismissed to attend their worship class. K-2nd remain in the worship service. WELCOME AND PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERING AND DOXOLOGY Tom Nicholson Tom Nicholson, My Tribute PASSING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST May the peace of Christ be with you! Congregation: And also with you! LIFE TOGETHER David Speakman MESSAGE O Day of Rest and Gladness David Speakman Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8-11 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. Deuteronomy 5:15 And he said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath. Mark 2:27-28 This is the word of God for the people of God. Congregation: Thanks be to God. GATHERING AT THE LORD S TABLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Therefore let us proclaim the mystery of the faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. *Children return to join their families* PRAYER OF BELIEF Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Be Still My Soul (In You I Rest) Be still my soul the Lord is on thy side, Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain Leave to thy God to order and provide, In ev'ry change He faithful will remain Be still my soul thy best thy heav'nly friend, Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end

Be still my soul thy God doth undertake, To guide the future as He has the past Thy hope thy confidence let nothing shake, All now mysterious shall be bright at last Be still my soul the waves and winds still know, His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below In You I rest, in You, I found my hope In You I trust, You never let me go I place my life within Your hands alone, Be still my soul Be still my soul the hour is hastening on, When we shall be forever with the Lord When disappointment grief and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot Love's purest joys restored Be still my soul when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last Jane Laurie Borthwick Jason Ingram Jean Sibelius Kari Jobe Kathrina Amalia von Schlegel Words: 2013 Worship Together Music Your Grace is Enough Great is Your faithfulness O God, You wrestle with the sinner's restless heart You lead me by still waters into mercy, And nothing can keep us apart So remember Your people, Remember Your children, Remember Your promise O God Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough for me Great is Your love and justice God, You use the weak to lead the strong You lead us in the song of Your salvation, And all Your people sing along Your Grace Is Enough, by Matt Mahler. 2003 spiritandsong.com. CONGREGATIONAL LIFE Thank You to all who donated items to the Open Arms tutoring program for their store. We collected so many wonderful items for the children. Thank you for your kind generosity! RALLY DAY! Come join us on Sunday, June 5th for our annual Rally Day celebration! We will all gather in the worship center (nursery is available for those under 3). Children will sit with their class. We will start PROMPTLY at 9:30am so please don't be late! We will hear from each Sunday School class (children, youth and adult) about what God has been teaching us at Hope this year. Afterwards we will enjoy a light breakfast together before the worship service. We look forward to celebrating together on June 5! Ultimate Sunday! Students, their families, and their friends are invited to join us at Hope on June 5th from 3-5pm. Ultimate Sundays are a way for the Students & Families community to play and Sabbath together. We will play ultimate frisbee, kickball, gaga ball, soccer, or another recreational activity. If sports aren't your thing, that's okay, too. We'll have opportunities for you to just relax and be together! VBS 2016, July 10th 13th. Come be a part of The Good News Network! Volunteers are needed to help prepare meals, play games, create fun crafts, sing crazy songs, and pray for the Lord to move in exciting and meaningful ways. These are just a few of the meaningful opportunities to help share the good news with children and show them the love of Jesus. If you are a rising 6th grader or older sign up today on the Latest News section of our website, hopechurchws.org. If you have any questions send us an email, vbs@hopechurchws.org. Folders are available for K-5th graders to use during worship. Please return following the service.
