Sunday, February 24, 2019 Epiphany Worship at 9:30 AM GATHERING Gathering Songs Morning Has Broken Hymn #556 1 Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word! 2 Sweet the rain s new fall, sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass. 3 Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning, born of the one light Eden saw play! Praise with elation, praise ev ry morning, God s recreation of the new day! Blessed Be Your Name In the land that is plentiful Where Your streams of abundance flow When I'm found in the desert place Though I walk through the wilderness Every blessing You pour out I'll turn back to praise When the darkness closes in Lord still I will say Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be the name of the Lord 1

Blessed be Your glorious name When the sun's shining down on me When the world's all as it should be On the road marked with suffering Though there's pain in the offering Every blessing You pour out I'll turn back to praise When the darkness closes in Lord still I will say Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name You give and take away You give and take away My heart will choose to say Lord blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name Confession and Forgiveness We come to this place to hear the story of God s radical love and forgiveness, to let God s story be made known in our lives and world. But we are all too aware of the ways that we do not listen, and try to go it our own way. Let us confess our sin Lord, we are sorry For the times we forget your story. For the times we forget your love is for all. For the times we feel lost and turn from you. Lord we are sorry For the times we judge ourselves and others harshly. 2

For the times we think some people don t deserve your grace. For the times we think so highly of ourselves that we fail to seek repentance. Lord we are sorry For the times we squander your grace. For the times we hurt our neighbors and ourselves. For the times we think our brokenness is the end of the story. We know the end of the story. The Lord will heal the broken heart. God will seek the lost and find them. Love wins. Life wins. Grace wins. In the name of +Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven and you are held in God s loving embrace. Amen. Song Grace Flows Down Amazing grace How sweet the sound Amazing love Now flowing down From hands and feet That were nailed To the tree Grace flows down And covers me It covers me It covers me It covers me And covers me Amazing grace How sweet the sound Amazing love Now flowing down From hands and feet That were nailed To the tree Grace flows down And covers me It covers me It covers me It covers me And covers me 3

Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Holy God, our righteous judge, daily you surprise us with unending forgiveness. Help us to trust in something more than ourselves and our goodness. Help us to trust in your love and grace for us. All this we pray through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. WORD Scripture Reading Psalm 66:1-7; 16-20 Bible pg. 459 1 Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth; 2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise. 3 Say to God, How awesome are your deeds! Because of your great power, your enemies cringe before you. 4 All the earth worships you; they sing praises to you, sing praises to your name. 5 Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds among mortals. 6 He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There we rejoiced in him, 7 who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations let the rebellious not exalt themselves. 16 Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for me. 17 I cried aloud to him, and he was extolled with my tongue. 18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. 19 But truly God has listened; he has given heed to the words of my prayer. 4

20 Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me. Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God Children s Message Please stand, as you are able Scripture Acclamation Change My Heart, O God Hymnal #801 God s Word for the Day Luke 18:9-14 Bible pg. 853 A reading from the Gospel of Luke. Hear God s Word for God s People. Speak, Lord, for your servants are listening. He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt 5

themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted. Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God Please be seated Message The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song Song Lord, Let my Heart Be Good Soil Hymnal #512 Lord, let my heart be good soil, open to the seed of your word. Lord, let my heart be good soil, where love can grow and peace is understood. When my heart is hard, break the stone away. When my heart is cold, warm it with the day. When my heart is lost, lead me on your way. Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart be good soil. Apostles Creed Hymnal pg. 105 I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers 6

Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always And also with you Please share the peace of our Risen Christ with your neighbors MEAL Offering An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. Offertory Anthem Jesus Loves Me arr. Glover Offertory Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful Hymnal #184 Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. 7

Offering Prayer Let us pray Extravagant God, you have blessed us with more gifts than we can count, and when we squander your grace, you continue to shower us with more. Lord, either through us or in spite of us, use our humble gifts to bless the world, that all might know your mercy, grace, and love. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Words of Institution In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The time is now. Jesus calls us all to this meal. Lamb of God Hymnal pg 154 Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace. 8

Benediction May you go into the world to share God s story. As you go, share stories of a sheep, a coin, and a son gone astray. Tell tales of dishonest managers, tax collectors and sinners, and other people just like you who are loved by God. Share your own story, and more importantly, share the story of the love and grace given to us all in + Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen Song For the Healing of the World Verse 1 Desperate people are making their way to see Jesus Wounded and broken we come for we ve nowhere to turn; Longing for freedom from demons and all our diseases He s making us whole and freeing our souls And we owe him our lives Chorus For the healing of the world Jesus came, Jesus lived; For the healing of the world Jesus died and rose again. In his sacrificial life God was making all things right Mercy flowing for the healing of the world. Verse 2 Surely he s borne all our griefs and collected our sorrows Here, in the shadow of death, he s no stranger to tears; Silent, he goes like a lamb as our weakness he borrows; He s taking the cup and drinking it up Then he pours out his life. Chorus Verse 3 Still in our world we see people continue to suffer; So many hungry and so many living in pain. Now we must go with God s healing and justice to offer. For this is the call, he asks for it all; Will you lay down your life? Chorus Dismissal Go in peace. Go in hope. Go in love. It s about time. 13
