February 3-4, 2018 Jesus feeds the 5000 John 6:1-14 Jesus can do anything! Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (20 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Ask kids about why they created fish art, and what their favorite part of today s service was! It s Superbowl weekend, so be prepared for lots of new kids and families visiting for the first time! *Today s service is 80 minutes long. Today s story is a great example of God s provision. Not only did Jesus feed 5000 people, he filled them completely full, and there were even leftovers! Jesus doesn t give us what we need; he gives us even more!

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. BASKET RELAY *Each team will need a bin, a bag, a basket, and bread and fish images. You ll also want to do this activity where there s access to a keynote, so you can play fun music during the activity (if possible). Divide kids into small groups, and have groups line up on one side of the room. Place a paper bag near each group, and give the first kid in line a basket. On the oppo side of the room, place a bin on the ground for each team. Put mixed up bread images and fish images in these bins. (Divide up fish and bread images evenly between the bins. There should be enough so that each kid gets 5 bread images and 2 fish images). Each kid will take a turn running to their team s bin and finding 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish to put in their basket. Then they can run back to their team, dump their bread and fish into the paper bag, and let the next kid go. Play the keynote music mix (the first slide) and let the game continue until all teams have finished getting their bread and fish! (Don t forget to collect all the bread/fish images for the next service. Do not throw away!) Tips: If you want to give kids an extra challenge, have them do silly actions while they race to their bins and back (Hopping on one foot, skipping, walking sideways, walking backwards, etc.) If you have a very small room of kids, you could have 2 teams, and each kid goes multiple times instead of just once. Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

You ll need the following props for today s lesson: Check out today s brand new Storytellers video at CrossroadsKidsClub.net/weekend. 12 bags (unfold and set up on stage) Bread images (1 per kid, can be reused from connect time) *Here s the music video we ll watch as kids have a dance party at the beginning of Large Group! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru0k 8uYEZWw *Today s service is 80 minutes long. DANCE PARTY! Main Goal: Have some fun and party! WELCOME AND INTRO *Click to play intro music. Say: Hey everybody, welcome to Kids Club! It s Super Bowl weekend, which means we ve probably got lots of new faces here today. We re really glad you re here! Say: Before we get started today, we re going to do something extra fun: have a DANCE PARTY! We re going to play a fun video, and you can dance and celebrate any way you want as you watch. Because in Kids Club, we love to party and celebrate that Jesus can do ANYTHING! Music Video: Happy Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson. Ask: Great dancing everyone, you can have a seat! Did you like racing and collecting bread and fish? (Let kids respond.) You re probably wondering why we played with bread and fish, huh? Well, those foods have something to do with our story today, and it s pretty amazing! Say: First, let s play a game. It s called Would You Rather, and the theme is food! I ll give you two choices, and you have to choose which one you d rather do. Ready? Stand up! (Give the following choices and corresponding actions.) Would You Rather... Eat pizza, or ice cream? (Jump for pizza, sit down for ice cream)

BE OUR GUEST Main Goal: Watch a fun movie clip about food! FEEDING THE 5000 Main Goal: Show how Jesus performed a miracle and created food for 5000 people from 5 loaves and 2 fish. ( Would You Rather? continued) Eat popcorn, or chips? (Jump for popcorn, sit down for chips) Swim in a pool of jelly, or peanut butter? (Jump for jelly, sit down for peanut butter) Eat a whole jar of mustard, or smother your whole head in ketchup? (Jump for mustard, sit down for ketchup) Eat mashed potatoes every day for breakfast, or waffles everyday for dinner? Say: Good job everyone, take a seat! I think no matter what you chose, we can all agree that we love food, right!? Now that we ve got food on our mind, let s watch a movie clip about a girl who gets served all the amazing food she could possibly want! Video: Beauty and the Beast / Be Our Guest Ask: How would you all like to have a feast like that? (Let kids respond.) Yep, that would be be amazing! Say: Now let s find out what food has to do with our story today! First, let s talk about a guy named Jesus. Some of you may have heard about him before, but some of you might not. He s God s son, and he came to live here on earth, and be close to us. Let s talk about three important things to set up Jesus story today: Jesus traveled a lot, talking about God and healing people of sickness and hurt. Lots of people heard about Jesus and the amazing things he did, so they followed him everywhere he went! One day, more than 5000 people followed Jesus up on a mountain! Say: Now I don t know about you, but when I go hiking up a mountain all day, I get hungry! And that s exactly what happened to all these people. They needed food, but there was nothing close by to eat! They were sooooo hungry. Let s all rub our tummies and pretend to be hungry! (Let kids respond.) Say: Let s watch a new video and see what happened next. As you watch, pay special attention to what Jesus does to feed all these people. Video: Storytellers / Feeding the 5000

JESUS DOES THINGS KNOW ONE ELSE CAN DO Main Goal: Understand that nothing is impossible for God! Look up these short videos to demonstrate motions in the script: *Sign language for possible https://www.signingsavvy.co m/sign/possible *Sign language for God https://www.signingsavvy.co m/sign/god/1409/1 RESPONSE TIME #1 Main Goal: Play a game to illustrate that Jesus can do anything! Ask: So how did Jesus do this miracle? Did he play a trick on everyone, and have all the food hiding under his shirt? (Let kids respond, No! ) Did he run really fast to a grocery store, and carry it all back? (Let kids respond, No! ) Did he do it like a magician, and pull the food out of a hat? (Let kids respond, No! ) Well how did he do it then? (Let kids respond.) Ask: He was able to do it because he s God! He can do amazing things that NO ONE else can do. Things that don t make sense, or seem impossible! Say: Let s check out a verse from the book of Mark that sums this up pretty well. Slide: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Say: All things are possible with God. If there s anything that you remember from today, it s that all things are possible with God. Let s learn some motions to go along with that! All things (spread your arms wide) are possible (hold your hands in fists in front of you, and move them up and down two times, like you re knocking your knuckles on a table) with God (put one hand in front of your face and, move down, as if you re dividing your face) Say: Good job guys, let s combine those motions together, and say it as a group! (Respond along with kids.) Say: We re going to play a game. I m going to tell you something, and if you think Jesus could do it, then do the motion we just learned for possible (demonstrate). If you think he couldn t do it, than just stay seated. Ready? Could Jesus (continued on next page) Could Jesus make a blind person able to see? Could Jesus make a person able to walk when they ve never been able to walk their whole life? Could Jesus raise a girl from the dead? Could Jesus love people, even if they hate him? Could Jesus know what you are thinking all the time? Could Jesus love and forgive you, even when you do wrong things? Say: The answer to those is YES! Jesus can do anything!

RESPONSE TIME #2 Main Goal: Give kids a chance to actively respond to what they re hearing. *Make sure props are ready. PRAYER AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Close the lesson with prayer and worship. Say: Remember, when Jesus created food for all those people, he didn t just make enough food to feed them. He made MORE than enough! He made so much food, there were 12 baskets full of leftovers! That s the kind of God we have. A God who gives us even more than we need, because he loves us so much. Say: We have 12 bags up here to represent the 12 baskets from the story! Some leaders are passing out bread and fish images to you right now, and I want you to hold on to it for a minute. (Let leaders finish handing out bread/fish images.) Say: Right now, think about one thing that you need from Jesus. It could be a big thing, or a tiny thing. Maybe you just need Jesus to comfort you. Maybe you need him to provide something really big. Maybe you just want to tell him thank you! Whatever it is, close your eyes, and get it in your mind right now. (Let kids think for a few seconds.) Say: Once you ve got it, come drop your bread and fish in one of these 12 baskets! (Let kids respond.) Great job everybody! Remember, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD! Let s do our motions again to help us remember that! (Go through motions again with kids). Say: We can trust Jesus to take care of us no matter what, because he will always love us, and he s willing to do anything for us, even die on a cross. Let s sing some worship songs to Jesus right now to thank him for doing so much! Music Video: Wake Music Video: Everything Belongs to God Pray: Jesus, thank you for loving us so much that you heal the sick, and rise from the dead. We love you for feeding all those people when they were hungry, and for helping us when we need it. Amen!

Goal: Kids will (1) learn about how Jesus performed a miracle and fed the 5000, and (2) understand how we can trust Jesus to do miracles in our own lives too. Why: Jesus did a lot of amazing things in his lifetime, and he s continuing to do them today. We want kids to recognize what Jesus is doing in their own lives. Tip: There s an extra fun surprise today: every kid gets a treat! Make sure to be on the lookout for kids with allergy alert stickers. SNACK & STORY *Today s activity involves giving kids a treat! You can have them eat it during Small Group, or send it home with them. Ask kids what Jesus used to make food for 5000 people (5 loaves of bread and 2 fish). Tell kids that today we re celebrating how Jesus can do AMAZING things that no one else can do, and we want to celebrate that with some fun treats! Give every kid a treat (ask kids if there are any allergy restrictions before passing out). As they eat their snack, discuss the story. 1. Why did so many people follow Jesus everywhere? 2. What did Jesus want to do for all those people when he saw they were hungry? What did he do with the 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish? 3. What do you think the little boy was thinking or feeling when he offered up his lunch? What did the disciples think of him? (They laughed.) What did Jesus think of the boy? (He loved him, and used his lunch!) MAKE IT PERSONAL Give each kid a fish cutout, and tell kids that we are creating fish art today to remind us of how Jesus provided what all those people needed using just a few fish! Set out regular markers and tell kids to think of one thing they want to ask God for, even if it seems impossible! Once they ve thought of it, they can write it down or draw it on one side of the fish. Set out dot markers and glue sticks, and give each kid 10 tissue paper squares. On the other side of the fish, they can decorate it like a real fish! They can use the materials to give it a face, fins, scales, patterns, bubbles, etc. Remind kids that dot markers are used by dotting the paper like a stamp. (Continued on next page.)

EXTRA TIME OPTION 1: ACT OUT THE VERSE Read the verse aloud as a group using the available verse card: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Practice doing the motions from Large Group for All things are possible with God. All things (spread your arms wide) are possible (hold your hands in fists in front of you, and move them up and down two times, like you re knocking your knuckles on a table) with God (put one hand in front of your face and, move down, as if you re dividing your face) EXTRA TIME OPTION 2: FUNNY FOODS Have kids sit in a circle (If your group is bigger than 10, you might want to divide into a few groups for this activity.) The first person says one food. Then the next person has to say that food and then add another food. Then the next person says the 2 previous foods, and then adds their own food. Go around the circle and let kids keep adding a food to the list, while trying to remember everyone else s! If you slip up you re out!
