CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH LOST. FOUND. FORMED. FOR SERVICE. 1 DAY OF PENTECOST May 20, 2018 8:00, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m. Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! -Psalm 98:1a AS WE GATHER (prepared by Jim Gann) Happy Birthday! OK, maybe today isn t your specific birthday, but we can still celebrate. Because of the creative act of the Helper, the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father and the Son, the Christian church was born on Pentecost Day. Peter s sermon to the thousands became the fundamental theme of the Christian church throughout the ages. The miraculous gift of tongues certainly demonstrated that God desired all people to hear His Word and be included in the new covenant. Turn with joy to those around you in your neighborhood, your workplace and your play spaces and bear witness to them, like the Apostles, of the joy, the forgiveness and the renewal you have received in Christ Jesus. PRELUDE (11:00) Choir You Raise Me Up Words and music by Rolf Lovland and Brendan Graham Arranged by Tom Fettke CALL TO WORSHIP and PASSING OF THE PEACE (Please stand) RINGING OF THE BELLS OPENING HYMN #648 Glorious Things of You Are Spoken

+ DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE + (Hymnal, p. 151) 2 INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. (please remain standing) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination) Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I

therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. 3 (Please remain standing) HYMN OF PRAISE

4 COLLECT OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray together. ALL: O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated) OLD TESTAMENT READING Ezekiel 37:1 14 (The Valley of Dry Bones) Reader: The Old Testament reading is from Ezekiel, chapter thirtyseven. (After the reading ) Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. (8:00) Choir You Raise Me Up Words and music by Rolf Lovland and Brendan Graham Arranged by Tom Fettke

EPISTLE READING Acts 2:1 21 (The coming of the Holy Spirit) Reader: The Epistle reading is from Acts, chapter two. (After the reading ) 5 Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! (Please stand for the Alleluia Verse and the reading of the Gospel Lesson) ALLELUIA VERSE HOLY GOSPEL John 15:26 27; 16:4b 15 (The work of the Holy Spirit) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, readings from the 15 th and 16th chapters. After the reading: Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

NICENE CREED All: We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, we acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. (Please be seated) We invite the children forward as we sing: LSB #817, v. 1, 7 Earth and all stars! Loud rushing planets! Sing to the Lord a new song! Oh, victory! Loud shouting army! Sing to the Lord a new song! He has done marvelous things. I too will praise Him with a new song! 6

Children of God, Dying and rising, Sing to the Lord a new song! Heaven and earth, Hosts everlasting, Sing to the Lord a new song! He has done marvelous things. I too will praise Him with a new song! CHILDREN S MESSAGE 7 SERMON HYMN #650 Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling SERMON Text: Ezekiel 37:1-14 Title: Dry Bones Hear the Word of the Lord TITHES, PLEDGES, AND OFFERINGS [Please take a moment and sign the attendance book at the end of the pew] (Please stand for the Prayers) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs. Lord God, on this day we praise You for sending the light of Your salvation to the whole world by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit. Cause the light of Your saving Word to shine in our hearts and throughout the world that we with many may be brought to true repentance and strengthened in saving faith in Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Cause Your Spirit especially to lead, guide, and enlighten all pastors and those whom You have called to proclaim Your life-giving Word. By the same Spirit, help them to point us and the world to Jesus Christ and Him crucified and risen again for the life of the world. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Even among the nations and those placed in the authority of government, cause Your light and Your truth to guide in the way of truth, both to the punishing of the ugliness of evil and to the praise of the beauty of all that is good. Give them wisdom to lead all people in the way of righteousness and peace. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: By Your Spirit, bring Your Word and assurance of deliverance, health, and healing to all who are in sorrow or need, sickness or adversity, [especially...]. Deliver, O Lord, especially those who are most helpless and those to whom death draws near. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: We give You thanks for all who have gone before us with the sign of faith, for all the saints through the ages, and especially our loved ones who now dwell in Your nearer presence and rest from their labors. [Silence for remembrance.] Keep us in fellowship with all Your saints, and bring us at last to the joys of Your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. [Additional petitions may be inserted here] Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. People: Amen. 8

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT + 9 PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. PROPER PREFACE It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who ascended above the heavens and, sitting at Your right hand, poured out on this day the promised Holy Spirit on His chosen disciples. For all this the whole earth rejoices with exceeding joy. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing

SANCTUS 10 THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Pastor: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, ( ) given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, ( ) shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup. We proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

LORD S PRAYER Pastor: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 11 PAX DOMINI Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: Amen. IMPORTANT!! "The last few months, giving to the Loving the Lost Campaign has been declining, and we are falling further behind on our pledge commitment as a congregation. Some of this is due to members moving on, but we have offset that to some extent with income from people that hadn't pledged. - Our original initial gifts and pledges amounted to approximately $506,000. Through the middle of April, total receipts including from non-pledge sources, was approximately $60,000 below the original pledge amount. In addition, we still have $43,000 remaining on our Outreach Center loan. It would be nice to be able to complete the payments on the loan prior to our new Pastor's installation. - Please prayerfully consider where you stand with your commitment." Concordia Men's Group will work for you -- does your home need minor repairs, minor painting, cleanup, etc.? We want to help. You provide materials; we work for free. Call Roland at 717-352-9991.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS LWML Annual Ladies Dinner Out, Thursday June 7 at 6:00 p.m. Sign up sheet is on the bulletin board in the narthex. Check out the menu! Mission of the Month for May is Fisher House. More info to come. MICAH S BACKPACK Thanks for all the generous food and cash donations that have been provided this school year. Our program at Concordia remains very strong thanks to the involvement of those who donate, and of course to our wonderful Micah s team. The packing and inventory volunteers assure that food items donated go into the hands of our 15 students at Lincolnshire each week. Cash donations allow for special packings during the year and for filling in shelves when we run low on needed items. The last day of school is 6/15. We will gladly accept food items until Sun. 6/3. The pantry will have it s annual deep clean in June and be ready for new donations at the end of summer. Have a great summer! New Sunday Morning Coffee/Fellowship Times - The Fellowship committee has worked out a schedule for providing coffee and fellowship which we hope will accommodate the folks from all three services: On the FIRST Sunday of each month coffee and pastries will be 9:00 9:30 in the fellowship hall. On the THIRD Sunday it will be set up after the 11:00 service. We will see how this schedule works and adjust it as needed. Mailboxes: A continued warm welcome to all of our regular visitors! Concordia serves four states and provides three Worship Services every Sunday in addition to other Ministries and activities. Communication is a challenge! There are enough mailboxes for everyone who desires a mailbox to have one. It is 16

our most used form of giving and receiving communication. Email and Facebook are also used to help inform everyone of activities and events. Please contact Rosella Rogers or Jean Tichnell if you don t have a mailbox or if you would prefer your mailbox to be located in the Outreach Center instead of the Narthex. Thank you. 17 ChurchTrac: If there is a change in any of your personal information especially phone number or email address please contact Jean Tichnell @304-274-0025 or jeantich@comcast so the info can be changed in ChurchTrac. Thank you! Prayer Shawl Ministry Request forms to have a prayer shawl made for you or a loved one are on the bulletin board to the left of the mailboxes. Please complete the form and put it in Jane O Farrell s mailbox. If anyone would like to share their talent of knitting or crocheting for this ministry please contact one of the members: Jane O Farrell, Stephanie Gore, Cheryl Dawson. Group meets the 2 nd Wednesday of every month. Church Library News: The Church library has a link on Concordia's Church Website (Our Library) and now under that link has the main library catalogue divided under four headings; PreK-Kindergarten, Children/Youth, Adult Fiction and Adult Non Fiction. FOOD FOR THE POOR LUTHERAN COALITION: Don t forget! We continue to collect funds to help serve the poorest of the poor. $2 per week from all our member families would mean $10,000 to help alleviate their tremendous suffering.
