SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST PROPER 21 Reclaiming, Rebuilding & Restoring the Family September 27 & 28, 2014 5:00 & 8:00 AS WE GATHER As our culture continues to stand opposed to God's will, it is important for God's people to stand firm, to refuse to conform to the culture, but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:1-3). If a Christian's family has been significantly affected by sin, it is important to acknowledge and confess the sin, sincerely repent and be renewed by the Holy Spirit. By God's grace, the sinful past can be left behind and we can look forward to the renewing and restoring that comes through fellowship with Christ (Philippians 3:8-14). WELCOME Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. (Ephesians 2:19-20) HANDSHAKES & HUGS OPENING HYMN #527 1 + PREPARATION + O Savior, Precious Savior O Savior, precious Savior, Whom yet unseen we love; O name of might and favor, All other names above, We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing; We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our holy Lord and King. O bringer of salvation, Who wondrously has wrought Thyself the revelation Of love beyond our thought, We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing; We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our gracious Lord and King. In Thee all fullness dwelleth, All grace and pow r divine; The glory that excelleth, O Son of God, is Thine. We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing; We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our glorious Lord and King. O grant the consummation Of this our song above In endless adoration And everlasting love; Then shall we praise and bless Thee Where perfect praises ring, And evermore confess Thee, Our Savior and our King! INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: Make me to know your ways, O LORD; People: teach me your paths. Pastor: Lead me in your truth People: and teach me, Pastor: for you are the God of my salvation; People: for you I wait all the day long. Pastor: You lead the humble in what is right, People: and teach the humble your way. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Almighty God, merciful Father, People: We confess with your Word that the soul who sins shall die. We confess that we are sinful souls from birth, each responsible for our thoughts, words, and actions that turn us against you, against ourselves, and against others. Forgive us for Jesus sake, and empower us by your Holy Spirit to live as humble citizens of Your Kingdom in love and service to others. Pastor: Beloved in Christ, the Lord says, I have no pleasure in the death of anyone... so turn, and live. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. 2

HYMN OF PRAISE Page 171 Pastor: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. People: (sung) Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia, alleluia. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty God, you exalted your Son to the place of all honor and authority. Enlighten our minds by your Holy Spirit that, confessing Jesus as Lord, we may be led into all truth; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. + WORD + OLD TESTAMENT READING Ezekiel 18:1 4, 25 32 ( If a wicked man turns... he will save his life. ) The word of the LORD came to me: "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'? "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die. "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear, O house of Israel: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die. But if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and 3 does what is just and right, he will save his life. Because he considers all the offenses he has committed and turns away from them, he will surely live; he will not die. Yet the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Are my ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? "Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live! EPISTLE Philippians 2:1 18 ( Look... to the interest of others. ) If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. 4

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 21:23 27 (28 32) (Jesus and the elders; Parable of the man with two sons) Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you this authority?" Jesus replied, "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John's baptism--where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' But if we say, 'From men'--we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet." So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' " 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #861 Christ Be My Leader Christ be my Leader by night as by day; Safe through the darkness, for He is the way. Gladly I follow, my future His care, Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there. Christ be my Teacher in age as in youth, Drifting or doubting, for He is the truth. Grant me to trust Him; though shifting as sand, Doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand. Christ be my Savior in calm as in strife; Death cannot hold me, for He is the life. Nor darkness nor doubting nor sin and its stain Can touch my salvation; with Jesus I reign. SERMON Repenting, Reclaiming, and Renewing the Family Romans 12:1-3 5 APOSTLES CREED (found on the inside back cover of the hymnal) OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. You may check the register for names of those to greet after the worship service. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Almighty God, you invite us to die to sin each day through our Baptism and to rise to new life with you, through your life-giving Son and Spirit. People: Knowing that you desire the repentance and conversion of all, cause us to rejoice in your gifts, to testify to your goodness and grace that welcomes every sinner, and to walk in your ways for the sake of Jesus. Pastor: Almighty God, as you are the grand designer of marriage and family, strengthen us by grace to forgive past failings, to live daily in your grace, and to build and rebuild our families according to your will. People: In this world of compromise and immorality, strengthen us that we might not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds in your truth. Pastor: Almighty God, as you watch over your Holy Church with your holy angels, continue to guard us from all evil, that no affliction or temptation would cause us to depart from you. People: Give us the desire to turn to the places where you deliver your gifts of faith and forgiveness: the altars, fonts and pulpits where you make and keep us your own. Pastor: Almighty God, all authority that exists derives from you. Bless those whom you have placed into positions of public authority. 6

People: By their good works, bring about justice, defend the helpless, punish evildoers and provide for the welfare of all people. Pastor: Almighty God, by your mercy lavished upon us in Holy Baptism, you have made us your children and called us to bear witness to your love and grace. Bless the mission and ministry of pastors and missionaries who share the Word of truth. Guide, guard, and protect Pastor Chuck Ferry and family as they share the gospel in Indonesia. People: Use all of us, your children, as lights in the world to cause others to see our hope in Christ and the good works done in His name, that others might desire to know you, our merciful Father. Pastor: Almighty God, everything that exists has its source in you, our creator. Bless all Christian marriages by your grace. We especially pray for Adam and Amber as they were united in holy marriage this weekend. We also rejoice with Tony and Vicki as they celebrate 25 years together and Jerry and Audrey and the 58 years you have given them as husband and wife. People: Grant that those who struggle in marriage may remain united through repentance and grace. Grant that those who rejoice in marriage would daily acknowledge your goodness toward them. Pastor: Almighty God, your Son humbled Himself by dying the shameful death of the cross for our eternal good. Until the day of His return, you provide for all our needs of body and soul. We pray for those in need, especially Gretchen, Ray, Nancy, Heidi, Jim, Marion, Gilberte, Jack, Mark, Richard, Virginia, Rosalie, Dorothy, Sarah and all who have requested our prayers. People: In your mercy, abide with those who suffer afflictions of mind or body, who suffer pain, sorrow, depression, anxiety or other maladies. Grant them healing and relief as well as hope and peace in Christ. Pastor: Almighty God, you have given us Jesus, the Name at which we bow the knee and confess that He is our Lord and God. People: At His Supper, give us reverent devotion, inspire in us true worship of Him, and move us to receive in faith His body and blood for our forgiveness, life and salvation. Pastor: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. 7 THE LORD S PRAYER THE WORDS OF OUR LORD + SACRAMENT + THE PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI Page 180 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace. DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. HYMN #496 Holy Spirit, Light Divine Holy Spirit, light divine, Shine upon this heart of mine; Chase the shades of night away, Turn the darkness into day. Let me see my Savior s face, Let me all His beauties trace; Show those glorious truths to me Which are only known to Thee. Holy Spirit, pow r divine, Cleanse this guilty heart of mine; In Thy mercy pity me, From sin s bondage set me free. Holy Spirit, joy divine, Cheer this saddened heart of mine; Yield a sacred, settled peace, Let it grow and still increase. Holy Spirit, all divine, Dwell within this heart of mine; Cast down every idol throne, Reign supreme, and reign alone. 8

HYMN #423 Jesus, Refuge of the Weary Jesus, refuge of the weary, Blest Redeemer, whom we love, Fountain in life s desert dreary, Savior from the world above: Often have Your eyes, offended, Gazed upon the sinner s fall; Yet upon the cross extended, You have borne the pain of all. Do we pass that cross unheeding, Breathing no repentant vow, Though we see You wounded, bleeding, See Your thorn encircled brow? Yet Your sinless death has brought us Life eternal, peace, and rest; Only what Your grace has taught us Calms the sinner s deep distress. Jesus, may our hearts be burning With more fervent love for You; May our eyes be ever turning To behold Your cross anew Till in glory, parted never From the blessed Savior s side, Graven in our hearts forever, Dwell the cross, the Crucified. HYMN #596 All Christians Who Have Been Baptized All Christians who have been baptized, Who know the God of heaven, and in whose daily life is prized The name of Christ once given: Consider now what God has done, The gifts He gives to ev ry one Baptized into Christ Jesus! You were before your day of birth, Indeed, from your conception, Condemned and lost with all the earth, None good, without exception. For like your parents flesh and blood, Turned inward from the highest good, You constantly denied Him. But all of that was washed away Immersed and drowned forever. The water of your Baptism day Restored again whatever Old Adam and his sin destroyed And all our sinful selves employed According to our nature. In Baptism we now put on Christ Our shame is fully covered With all that He once sacrificed And freely for us suffered. For here the flood of His own blood Now makes us holy, right, and good Before our heav nly Father. 9 Continued O Christian, firmly hold this gift and give God thanks forever! It gives the power to uplift In all that you endeavor. When nothing else revives your soul, Your Baptism stands and makes you whole And then in death completes you. So use it well! You are made new In Christ a new creation! As faithful Christians, live and do Within your own vocation. Until that day when you possess His glorious robe of righteousness Bestowed on your forever! COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: We give thanks to you, Lord God, that you have refreshed us through this good gift of Jesus body and blood. We pray that you would grant strength to all citizens of your Kingdom, that we may follow Jesus living in humble love and service to those we encounter in this world. Through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION Pastor: The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The LORD look upon you with favor and + give you peace. CLOSING HYMN #922 Go, My Children, with My Blessing 10 Continued Go, My children, with My blessing, Never alone. Waking, sleeping, I am with you; You are my own. In My love s baptismal river I have made you Mine forever. Go, My children, with My blessing You are My own.

Go, My children, sins forgiven, At peace and pure. Here you learned how much I love you, What I can cure. Here you heard My dear Son s story; Here you touched Him, Saw His glory. Go, My children, sins forgiven, At peace and pure. Go, My children, fed and nourished, Closer to Me; Grow in love and love by serving, Joyful and free. Here My Spirit s power filled you; Here His tender comfort stilled you. Go, My children, fed and nourished, Joyful and free. I the Lord will bless and keep you And give you peace. I the Lord will smile upon you And give you peace; I the Lord will be your Father, Savior, Comforter, and Brother. Go, My children; I will keep you And give you peace.
