November 3-4, 2018 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Daniel 3 God goes through hard things with us. Part 1 (15 minutes) Large Group (5-10 minutes after service starts) Part 2 (10-15 minutes) Game Time Part 3 (10 minutes) Cool Down Time Part 4 (10-15 minutes) Large Group Part 5 (10-15 minutes or until the end of service) Small Groups As kids arrive, give each kid a different colored dot sticker. This will determine which team they re on. Each small group needs a different color. Keep kids in small groups until their parents pick them up. You can use coloring pages, mazes and word searches as an extra time activity! Think of a personal example of something hard that God was with you through prepare to share it in Large Group! Here s this week s big idea: God goes through hard things with us. As followers of Jesus, we won t always have an easy life. We ll have to make hard choices, and go through scary situations. The thing is, we don t have to be afraid because God goes through those things with us. He never leaves our side!

Part 1 (Large Group) Main Goal: Introduce and discuss today s BIG IDEA: God goes through hard things with us. Supplies: None Video: Finding Nemo / Jellyfish Scene (0:00-3:02; https://vimeo.com/8402214) Time: 15 minutes *Start large group 10 minutes into the service. INTRO: GOD IS ALWAYS WITH US Welcome: Hi everybody, welcome to Kids Club! I m so glad you re here today. Today, we re going to hear an incredible story about three friends who went through something really REALLY hard. Something terrifying, actually! But they weren t alone: God was with them. And that leads to today s BIG IDEA: God goes through hard things with us. Ask: Do you think it s easier, or harder, to go through tough things in life alone? (Let kids respond.) I definitely need other people in my life to help me get through hard things. But I don t just need people I need God too. (Share a personal example from your life where you needed to rely on other people and God to get you through.) WE ALL NEED HELP SOMETIMES Say: Let s watch a clip from Finding Nemo, where a couple of fish have to work together to get through something dangerous. Pay attention to how they get through it! Video: Finding Nemo / Jellyfish Scene (3 minutes) Ask: What would have happened if Dory had gone through all the jellyfish by herself? (Let kids respond.) Yep, she never would have escaped! She needed someone else to help rescue her. Say: That was a funny example of needing help, but I bet there are other times when it s hard for US to be alone, like when when we go through tough things that make us sad or angry. Ask: Does anyone want to share a tough time when you really needed a friend or your family to help you? (Let kids respond. If no one is comfortable sharing, give a personal example from your own life!) Say: Today we re going to talk about how God is the one person that we can ALWAYS count on to be with us. No matter how hard it is, He will be there by our side.

Part 1 (Large Group) Main Goal: Introduce and discuss today s BIG IDEA: God goes through hard things with us. Supplies: None Video: The Fiery Furnace (https://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=duyqtmka4wk) Time: 15 minutes *Start large group 10 minutes into the service. SHADRACH, MESHACH AND ABEDNEGO Say: Our story today revolves around three guys with some pretty interesting names: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Try and say that 3 times fast! (Let kids respond.) These guys were a part of God s family, and they were living in a place called Babylon. Say: The king of Babylon was named Nebuchadnezzar, and he decided to make a statue for everyone to bow down and worship. Now this wasn t just a regular statue that you see everyday. It was about 90 feet tall, and made of gold! And Nebuchadnezzar said that anyone who didn t bow down to the statue, had to get burned up in a furnace! Say: We re going to watch a new video and hear about what happens next. Try to figure out how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were able to get through this really hard time. Video: The Fiery Furnace (6 minutes) Ask: How did the three guys get through something as hard as burning in a furnace? (Let kids respond.) Yep, God was with them, and he rescued them! Say: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego didn t care that everyone was worshipping the golden idol, and they didn t care that the king would throw them in a furnace! They stuck together, helped each other through it, and relied completely on God to be with them. Say: Let s all play a game working together and showing trust, just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego had to do! *Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 2 (Game Time) Main Goal: Play a game to help kids understand today s big idea. Supplies: Paper plates (3/small group) Video: 10-minute countdown timer Time: 10 minutes OUT OF THE FURNACE! Say: In this game, we re going to have to work together as teams, just like the team in today s story Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego! Set up: Depending on the size of your room, you can either stay in one large group, or break into smaller groups. (If you have a lot of kids, you ll probably want to split into 2 teams or multiple small groups.) Designate two areas of the room as a furnace and a safe zone (or if you re in groups, designate a furnace and safe zone for each group). The floor between the furnace and the safe zone is dangerous, and cannot be touched directly! Goal of the game: The object of this game is to rescue teammates out of the furnace and get everyone on your team to the safety zone. Each team is allowed some items to help them get across 3 paper plates. Teams can use these to get across the floor, without touching it! Players are not allowed to touch the floor directly or else they will have to return to the furnace. It is up to each group to figure out the best way to get their team across the ocean (without touching water). This is not a race (although you could add that challenge for a little bit of competition) teams just try to make it! If a group finishes first have them repeat again! *Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 3 (Cool Down Time) Main Goal: Do an activity to help kids understand today s big idea: God goes through hard things with us. Supplies: Piece of black paper (1 per kid) Red, orange or yellow chalk (1 piece per kid, reused) Video: 10-minute countdown timer Time: 10 minutes ICEBREAKER QUESTION Go around your group and have each kid say their name and answer this question: What s the scariest thing you ve ever done? (Extension: Did anyone help you do it?) DEBRIEF THE GAME Ask: What did you have to do to win the game? (Let kids respond.) How did you have to work together to get out of the furnace? What other times in your life would it be hard to do something by yourself? (Let kids respond.) Do: Give each kid a piece of chalk and piece of black paper. Tell kids to think of something they can t do by themselves it could be a sport, something at school, at home, an activity, or just something that s hard to do on your own! Let them write those things on the black paper, and draw flames of fire all around them! Let them be creative, and draw the fire (or a furnace) however they want!

Part 4 (Large Group) Main Goal: Give kids a chance to respond to what they ve heard today, and worship! Supplies: Video: Video: KC Raps / Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=uq7zxeocvuu) Music Video: Live Like You re Loved (https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=q_r47xhkf20) *Play the 10-second countdown video to help kids refocus as they get back into one large group. GOD IS ALWAYS WITH US Say: They trusted in God, and followed him when they were going through something really hard and scary. And God not only rescued them from the fire...he actually went into it with them! Say: God does the same for us. When we re facing something hard, or sad, or scary, he doesn t leave us to deal with it alone. He will always walk with us through painful times, when we re worried or afraid. Say: Let s read this verse from Deuteronomy that helps us see just how much God loves us, and will go hard things with us. Slide: never desert you. So don t be afraid. Don t lose hope. Time: 15 minutes *The 10-second countdown video is to help kids refocus and transition back into Large Group. These timers will become a permanent part of lessons, and include a funny clip at the end! RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP Say: Let s watch a music video about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Listen closely to this guy rapping! Video: KC Raps / Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Ask: What did that the guy keep saying over and over at the end of the video? (Let kids respond.) Faith in God. Trusting that God would help them was the only way they got through it. Say: Right now, take a minute to think about what our own fiery furnace is. It may not be a real fire, but it might be something in your life that s hard for you. (Let kids have a few moments of silence.) Now, picture that God is standing with you, as you go through it. Pray: God, we trust that you will be with us no matter what, even when we go through hard things. Thank you for loving us so much, that you ll never leave us alone. Amen! Say: Now let s worship Jesus some more, and give him all our attention! You can stay seated, stand, or move apart and find another spot in the room. Music Video: Live Like You re Loved BAPTISM WEEKEND Say: Next weekend, we re doing something special at Crossroads: baptisms! That s when you decide to publicly declare that you want to follow Jesus. And to symbolise that, we physically get dunked in water, and then come back up! If you want to know more about that, talk to your adults about it.

Part 5 (Small Groups) Main Goal: Discuss today s story and how it applies to kids lives through asking questions and doing a hands-on activity. Supplies: Markers (1 set/group) Scissors (1/kid) Blank template (1/kid) Verse template (1/kid) Time: 10-15 minutes (or until parents pick up) Tip: Pray together as a group. (If a volunteer wants to pray, let them go for it! You can also ask kids for specific things that they would like prayer for.) EXTRA TIME? Give kids maze and word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up. RESPOND TO THE STORY How did Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego follow God? Everyone else was doing what the king asked, because they didn t want to go in the furnace. Have you guys ever felt pressure to do something because all your friends were doing it? What do you think they were thinking at that moment, when they were facing burning hot fire? What kind of fire are you going through right now? What s one hard thing that you re facing? What hard/scary thing did Jesus go through to rescue us? (He died on the cross to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world.) MAKE IT PERSONAL Give each kid 2 activity templates: 1 template has blank spaces on each side. Tell kids to think of a hard thing (or multiple hard things) that they re facing right now (it could be something at home, school, with friends, etc.) Next, write down a prayer in 1 or more of the spaces, asking God to be with you as you face that thing. Kids could also draw a picture, if that s more helpful for them! 1 template has a verse on both sides. As a group, read the verse out loud. Remind kids that we will always face fiery furnaces or hard things, like what they ve just written/drawn, but God will be there with us through it all. Set out scissors and tell kids to cut on the dotted line on each template (But don t go past the dotted line!) Next, kids should fit the templates together like this: Extra/alternative option for kids who might not want to do a craft: have them write and perform a RAP of what they learned today! It can be about the fiery furnace or about how God helps us through tough times.
