Welcome to our parish! As pastor, I hope we can enrich your experience as much as you enrich ours. Fr. David Ruby PRAYER FOR MOTHERS Heavenly Father, from the beginning you have chosen to entrust the human person to mothers in a special way. We thank and praise you for the gift of mothers; for their tenderness, care and compassion, for their intuition and encouragement, for commitment and sacrifice. Bless all mothers this day. Keep, strengthen and refresh them in your loving care. May they be blessed by our open-hearted love and gratitude. Amen. 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island NEW FEAST DAY FOR MARY! Pope Francis has designated the Monday after Pentecost as the obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. This year, the new feast day will fall on May 21 st. This is not a holy day of obligation but rather an opportunity to celebrate Mary as the true Mother of the Church. Our Blessed Mother was with Jesus throughout his earthly life and ministry, as well as at the foot of the cross when he died and with the Apostles after her Son s resurrection and ascension into heaven. Join us for a special Mass celebrating Mary on Monday, May 21 st, at 9:00 am in Egg Harbor! Notice: If you have an announcement to be read at Mass regarding your church activity, please send an email to Mary Gomoll at marygomoll@gmail.com. Language proficiency takes consistent exposure, study and practice. Conversation Partners, a Stella Maris ecumenical program, responds to this need by providing English language practice. An English speaker is paired with a learner to help the learner practice and improve their English. The partners usually meet 1 ½ hours per week at their convenience using donated materials to facilitate learning. There is no cost and no need to be a trained teacher to do this. We currently have 19 learners and are always looking for more teaching and learning partners. How can you help? Become a teaching partner. Become a learning partner. Refer someone you know who could use English practice. Donate money for teaching materials. For more information contact: Becky Nash (920) 421-3332 pastoralchurch@dcwis.com or Panfila Jauregui (920) 421-1071 panfilajauregui@icloud.com. Christian Service & Responsibility If you are in financial need, Stella Maris needs to help you. Please call the parish office or speak with Father Ruby Be courageous witnesses to Christ in the places where you live and work. Tweet from Pope Francis THANK YOU so very much to all those who donated items to our recent Adopt-a-Soldier program for care packages sent to 75+ Door and Kewanee military. YOU ARE INVITED to view the very important documentary, The Raising of America, on May 16 at 6 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County church, 10341 Hwy 42 in north Ephraim. Why are so many children in the richest country on the planet faring so poorly? This 1-hour film interweaves discoveries from neuroscience with the stories of families and communities doing all they can to provide the nurturing environments to all babies and young children need to thrive while too often hindered by social conditions. And when parents are pressed by lack of time, money and resources, babies pay the price. The consequences may last a lifetime. Improving conditions for families with young children is perhaps the most prudent investment any nation can make. WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO? Last fall, $1,000 was sent to Catholic Relief Services for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma relief. $500 given to Special Olympics-Door County enabled those with intellectual disabilities the tools they need to increase their selfconfidence and improve their health. CAN YOU HELP? August 4, Altrusa of Door County will sponsor their annual Back to School Fair at the Sturgeon Bay High School. Volunteers are needed to help a child collect their school supplies. If you would be interested in volunteering or would like more information please contact Altrusa at: BTSvolunteers@aol.com. Thank you for considering this request.

5 The Ascension of the Lord-May 13, 2018 Worship and Music Column AS WE NEAR PENTECOST, A PRAYER FOR THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit The first movement of this prayer is to ask for the Holy Spirit to come to us. A lot goes into preparing our hearts to ask for the Holy Spirit to come, not the least of which is to acknowledge that there is a Holy Spirt and that we feel something missing without the presence of the Spirit in our lives. This is the Spirit Jesus promised to send us so that we would not feel orphaned. This is the Spirit that transformed the first disciples from people afraid and locked in to the upper room. Fill the hearts of your faithful This is a request for a heart filled with the Spirit. This isn't asking, "Give me a little bit of your Spirit." This is a bold request. We are asking that we might be filled - and therefore, transformed by the Spirit. No hesitation, no doubt, no fear, no judgment, no wrangling, no selfishness can remain. Fill us. Fill me. Enkindle in them the fire of your love Our prayer gets even more specific. We desire the love which only the Spirit can bring. We know it is a fire and we ask for it. It is a purifying fire. It burns away all that is in the way. And, it warms whatever is cold. This fire brings a new vitality and courage. And, fire can be shared with others, without being diminished. Set our hearts on fire. Set my heart on fire. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created Paul tells us, " So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. [ 2 Corinthians 5:17] We are asking the Spirit to make us a new creation. This is more than a new beginning or a fresh start. We are asking for a transforming renewal. Our lives can be new with the Spirit filling our hearts. Give us/me your Spirit and make us/me new. And you shall renew the face of the earth When we are on fire and renewed by the Spirit, we can become one with that Spirit's activity of renewing the whole world. We can be the fire that ignites other fires. We can work to bring reconciliation, healing, true justice and renewal for all the people on the face of the earth. Let me be part of your Spirit's fire for all God's creation. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to come to us and to our communities.
