April 14-15, 2018 Peter walks on water Matthew 14:22-33 Jesus want us to follow him, even when we re afraid. Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Ask kids why they made a comic book today! When kids first arrive, talk about bravery. Ask them what it means to be brave, or about times they have had to be brave.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. SUBMARINES AND MINES Keep kids in one large group. The goal of the game is for kids to get from one end of the room to the other end without getting tagged by a submarine or a mine. Here s how to play: Choose three kids to be the submarines: Place them evenly throughout a large open space, standing inside a hula hoop. Give them each 2 foam balls (these are the submarine torpedos). Submarines will launch their torpedos by throwing their balls at kids as they run past. They can NOT aim for the head, and they must stay in their hula hoop at all times. Now, you re ready to play: Line the rest of the kids up along one side of the room. On the leaders mark, kids will try to run across the open space without getting hit by a torpedo. If a kid gets touched by a torpedo, they have to lay on the ground (on their stomach or back) and become a mine. They can now try to touch other kids with their hands (but they have to stay laying on their back or stomach, they cannot move from their spot). Now, the rest of the kids will try to cross the room again, but this time, the submarines OR the mines can try to touch them. The last three kids standing get to be the new submarines! Start over and play another round (depending on how much time you have, you can play this once, or play it multiple times). Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Here s today s God s Story video: God s Story / Peter Walks on Water: https://youtu.be/hg6i4fkb6we Music Video: Fearless (https://youtu.be/yqtf71milwy) WELCOME AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Welcome kids and kick off the lesson with some fun, celebratory worship. Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids Club. It s great to see you here! Let s talk about that Connect Time game; What was your favorite part (Let kids respond.) Who got to be submarines or mines (Let kids respond.) Who won the game, and never got struck with a torpedo (Let kids respond.) Great job! Say: Imagine if you were actually in the ocean, and you had to dodge real torpedos. What would be going through your head (Let kids respond.) Well, I don t know about you, but I would be pretty scared, and doing everything I can to get OUT of that water! Say: Today we re going to talk about what it s like when you re facing something really scary, but Jesus wants you to follow him anyway. He might not be asking you to swim in an ocean full of torpedos, but there will be other things! Say: Before we get to that, let s get started with some worship! You can spread out and get comfortable, or stand up and get ready to dance! Music Video: Reckless Love Say: Last week we talked about a guy named Peter, and how he left everything behind his home, his job, and his friends all to go and follow Jesus. And now we re going to hear how Peter followed Jesus even through a really scary event.

WE ALL GET SCARED! PETER AND THE STORM Ask: Raise your hand if you ve experienced something scary. (Let kids respond.) Yep, me too. Right now, everyone turn to a friend, and take turns telling each other something scary that you ve been through. (Give kids a minute to do this. Alternatively, let a few kids share with the whole group instead.) Say: We all experience fear. Things that make us afraid or worried. Let s guess what scary thing Peter went through in today s story. First, I ll read the choices, and then we ll all vote! (Read the following choices on the slide.) Slide: Did Peter a. Go through a very painful disease b. Get stuck in a huge storm in the middle of a sea c. Almost get run over by a herd of donkeys Say: Okay, if you think it was A, raise your hand. If you think it was B, raise your hand. If you think it was C, raise your hand. (Let kids respond to each choice.) And the winner is..b! Peter got stuck in a storm on the sea! Say: Let s check out a movie clip of a character who gets stuck out in the middle of the ocean, when a huge storm rolls in. As you watch, imagine what it would be like to go through this! Video: Moana / Lost on the Ocean Say: Has anyone ever been in a storm on the water (Let kids respond.) Well, when it happened to Peter and the disciples, they were pretty worried. They were out in the middle of the Sea of Galilee, and there were HUGE waves and really strong winds. Say: What s even worse, is they didn t have a fancy boat with a motor and life jackets. They had a small, simple fishing boat, and it probably looked like this... (Click to show image of a boat.) Imagine riding in that during a storm! Say: We re going to watch a video now, and see what happened next. As you watch, pay attention to how Peter follows Jesus, even through something scary. Video: God s Story / Peter Walks on Water Ask: Now that s an amazing story! Who can tell me what Peter did to follow Jesus (Let kids respond.) Yep, he walked out to Jesus on the water. Think about that for a minute. He WALKED. ON. WATER.

PETER TRUSTED JESUS RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP Say: Peter was already going through something that requires a lot of bravery. He and the disciples were trying to just survive in the storm by not falling overboard! Say: But Peter didn t stop there. He actually made the choice to get out of the boat, step into the raging, violent waves, and start walking toward Jesus. Peter believed that Jesus was powerful enough to do anything, even help HIM walk on water too! Ask: Who can remember what else happened in the story, after Peter was out on the water (Let kids respond.) Yep, as soon as Peter stopped looking at Jesus and started looking at the waves instead, he got scared and started sinking. But Jesus didn t let him drown. He rescued Peter, just like he rescues us. Say: Let s watch another video of this story, but this one is pretty realistic! As we watch, imagine being in that boat, and see Jesus walk toward you during a scary time in your life. Video: The Bible Miniseries / Jesus Walks on Water Say: Let s read what Jesus said when he was out on the water. This is from the book of Mark: Slide: Matthew 14:27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. Don t be afraid, he said. Take courage. I am here! Say: So why doesn t Peter, or WE, have to be afraid (Let kids respond.) Yep, it s because Jesus is with us! We can be brave and have courage to follow Him, because he is always in control, and he will ALWAYS take care of us, no matter what we re going through. Say: Just like Peter was afraid to be walking on that water, WE will sometimes face scary things too. We may not be in the middle of a literal storm, but we do face other kinds of storms, don t we Say: Think of one hard thing you face in your life. It can be anything, some pain you ve gone through something you don t want to do. As we watch this music video, think about how Jesus calls you to be brave and follow him, even when that storm is happening. Music Video: Fearless Pray: Invite a kid to come up and pray for the group, that Jesus would help us be brave, and follow him wherever he leads us.

Goal: Kids will (1) recall Peter s bravery, (2) understand what bravery means, (3) recognize that Jesus calls and equips us all for bravery and (4) identify one we way can demonstrate bravery this week. Why It can be easy to avoid difficult situations. But it s important for kids to know that life is full of challenges, and that Jesus actually calls us to be brave. Tip: If kids are fearful, encourage them with the words from the Bible verse or the words of Jesus in the story of Peter. You can find them in Matthew 14:22-33. GET TO KNOW KIDS Go around the group and have each kid say (1) their name and (2) one thing they re afraid of (spiders, heights, etc.) RESPOND TO THE STORY Set a stack of 20 question cards in the middle of the group (with the question mark face up), and kids take turns drawing a card. If they get a card with a question on it, they read the question out loud, and answer it. (If a kid gets a True or False question, make sure they say the correct answer if it s false.) If they get a non-question card, they have to do the funny action it says! Make sure to collect the question cards, and return them for the next service. *If a kid doesn t feel comfortable answering out loud or doing what s on the card, that s ok! Ask if someone else to do it instead. DIY COMIC BOOK Give each kid a comic book template and 2 stickers. Fold it in half so that the title is on the front. Hand out markers and let kids create their own comic book: Retell the story of Peter walking on water using the characters and events from the story, but give it your own twist! You can make the characters modern day, change the setting to a different place instead of a sea, etc. Draw pictures in the blank boxes, and write short sentences in the thought bubbles to show what characters are thinking or saying. To motivate kids, tell them we re going to look at everyone s comics at the end of Small Group, and vote on their favorites!
