AT THE FEET OF BIBLE & DEVOTIONAL READING A Note from Joanna Welcome to the At the Feet of Jesus Bible & Devotional Journal. For many years, I tried and failed to read through the Bible in a year, but then I was introduced to a unique guide that went back and forth between the Old and New Testament, and every changed! Not only did I meet my goal, I saw the Good News of the gospel in a way I d never experienced before. It wasn t two separate testaments, but one large love letter straight from the heart of God. Unable to find that original guide, I created this one to help you experience the Bible much like I did. Each day, you ll read approximately two chapters from the Old or New Testament as well as one chapter from Psalms or Proverbs. Because reading through the Bible in a year can feel daunting, I ve given you a Catch-Up & Reflect day each week, plus several more at the end of the month, depending on its length. Though not necessary, I d like to invite you to also read an entry from my devotional At the Feet of Jesus: 365 Days to Nurture a Mary Heart. (It features the reading schedule and is available for purchase here.) How to Use the Journal On the pages that follow, you ll find space to record your Bible reading highlights and devotional reflections. Print these pages and place in a binder for easy use. As you approach your quiet time each day, have your Bible, this journal, and a copy of At the Feet of Jesus. Refer to the Bible reading schedule (pgs 3-6) for each day s assignment (also in the back of devotional). Here s how the Bible reading program works 1. Before you begin, ask the Holy Spirit to remove any preconceived ideas or biases so that you can receive a fresh word from the Lord. 2. Read the assigned chapters completely, then go back to choose a verse or verses to meditate on. Note the portion of scripture read. Write the verse(s) word-for-word, including the reference. Respond to what you feel the Lord is saying in the how it impressed me section. 3. Do the same as you read the daily entry from At the Feet of Jesus. If something stands out, write down the phrase word-for-word. Respond to what you sense God saying in your journal. 4. Take all of it to the Lord in prayer. 5. If you are part of the Facebook ATFJ 2019 reading community, leave a comment in the daily thread, which lists the Bible reading and devotional assignments. Throughout the day, allow your heart and mind to return to the truth the Holy Spirit has illuminated. Allow a holy dialogue to develop as you talk to God about what He s shown you. For more tips on going deeper in your walk with God, visit www.joannaweaverbooks.com. Print Instructions: To add pages to this journal, print off pages 9-18 as many times as needed. (If you prefer Bible-reading-only format, print opening pages 1-8, then make multiple copies of page 19.) I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. EPHESIANS 1:17

AT THE FEET OF BIBLE & DEVOTIONAL READING Reading and Marking Your Bible If you don t yet have a Bible that you really enjoy and understand, I suggest that you go to your local Christian bookstore and look at the variety of different translations available. Consider upgrading to a study edition that has a thorough concordance and study helps as well as brief explanatory notes and commentaries throughout. Begin to make this Bible your own. When I began to underline and highlight scripture, my Bible became alive to me and a tangible record of my walk with the Lord! Here are some tips to enhance your reading and study experience: 1. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak something fresh to your heart (Ephesians 1:17). 2. Read slowly, thinking of ways to apply what you re reading to your life. 3. Using a pen, colored pencil, or non-bleed highlighter, mark things that stand out to you, such as words of encouragement, insights, challenges, observations, etc. 4. While there are different methods, here are a few simple markings you can use: [Brackets] put around a phrase or place in margin to note a specific portion. /Diagonal Lead-in and out/ use within the text or in the margin to mark a longer passage. Circle use to emphasize repeated words in a passage or to indicate the principal characters or themes of that passage. Underline use to highlight words, phrases, or a sentence. For a block of verses, other markings are often less tedious than underlining. When a verse really speaks to a situation I m going through, I mark it with a star or make notes in the margins with a date to remind me of what God has said. This personal interaction with the Word of God has caused me to fall in love with the Bible even more. I hope it helps you as well! Adapted from Growing Strong in God s Family: The 2:7 Series (Colorado Springs: NavPress, 1987) Pray Every Day Pages If you re like me, I can get so overwhelmed by the needs around me, I don t get around to actually praying. I just spend my time fretting about them. To help you overcome the overwhelm we ve included Pray Ever Day section at the end of this journal (pgs 17-18). You ll find space to categorize prayer requests. Go to these pages each day to focus on one set of needs, rather than your entire prayer list. (Also space for Other Needs. ) MONDAY Pray for Your Family TUESDAY Pray for God s Family (local church & around the world) WEDNESDAY Pray for Your Community THURSDAY Pray for this Nation FRIDAY Pray for the World SATURDAY Pray for the Helpless, Hopeless, Hurting & Lost SUNDAY Pray for Personal Guidance
