M Y D E A R B R O T H E R S A N D S I S T E R S I N C H R I S T, alws heard people speak about political correctness or being politically correct, but I did not understand what the words eant. I had to consult Mr. Webster for its eaning, and I read that being politically correct is agreeing with the idea that people should be careful to not use language or behave in a w that could offend a particular group of people. If this is the case, I guess it is safe to s that Jesus was not politically correct all the tie. He was alws straightforward with his words. He did not ince words when he rebuked the Pharisees and the Scribes to the point that he told the people to do and observe whatever they tell you, but do not follow their exaple, for they preach but they do not practice. (Matthew 23:3) Truly, Jesus uttered words that are very challenging, and any ties we have to grapple for the exact eaning of His words. (Soebody even dared to s that Jesus would ake a very poor politician because He doesn t tell us things we like to hear.) His words ake us pause and think, and we wish we can s to Hi without being disrespectful, Are you serious? He told his listeners that they ust hate their father and other, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and one s very self to be worthy to becoe his follower. Of course, we know by now that He did not really ean that we have to hate our loved ones. The only thing Jesus wants us to hate is sin. But by sing these words, He is telling us that if we are to clai being a disciple (eaning being a faithful Christian), He ust be ore iportant to us than anyone and anything else. This is why He used his parable of the tower and said that one should sit down irst and calculate the outl to see if he has enough eans and resources to coplete the project. It will not be good to start ling the foundation, and then quit without copleting the work because the cost is too high and he cannot go on anyore. The sae thing with the parable of the king who is about to go to battle: he has to assess his capability to engage the eney and win the war. If he cannot win it, it will be best for hi not to go to war at all. All that Jesus is telling us is: true discipleship will cost us a lot, and he does not conceal the fact that he deands a lot fro us. There is no roo for tepidity in Christian discipleship. It is all in or nothing at all. Yes, it cannot be any tougher. But we need not worry. He provides us with the eans to do it, if we only open our hearts up to his Holy Spirit who will ake us see and understand. "The Pharisees and scribes began to coplain, sing, 'This an welcoes sinners and eats with the.'" Jesus knew these self-righteous religious leaders were coplaining. And he knew they needed to learn a lesson. So, in addition to giving a lived exaple of welcoing the copany of "tax collectors and sinners," Jesus also directly taught the skeptics about the iportance of welcoing those who have been lost. Tod's Gospel gives a powerhouse lineup of three parables that all teach a siilar essage: rejoice over the lost sheep, rejoice over the lost coin, and rejoice over the return of the lost son. The thee can be suarized in the siple directive: rejoice don't reject. When soeone who isn't part of the "fold" appears in church, this is cause for rejoicing! It should not be cause for gossip, sidews glances, or nervous whispers about what to do or s. Rather a genuine sile and word of welcoe would be in order at the very least, and a heartfelt invitation to join the counity would be totally appropriate. Too often we becoe coplacent about our Christian copany. We get used to seeing the sae people every Sund and forget about the "lost" en and woen who are outside the bounds of our cofort zone. Jesus gives us the iage of an active shepherd who goes "after the lost one until he inds it," and a diligent widow who will "sweep the house, searching carefully" until she inds her coin. He tells us of a father who "ran to his son, ebraced and kissed hi," in spite of the separation they had faced. We too are called to take initiative in seeking out those who are lost, and to rejoice heartily when they inally do coe back hoe. In everything, be it a thing sensed or a thing known, God is hidden within. St. Bonaventure God our Father, you create all things in this world as gifts for your created beings. This d is ade holy by the presence of new life, ade real by the love of spouses and their collaboration with you. On this d bless all grandparents and their grandchildren. M they both praise you for their place in the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Aen L T S Table hostess eeting Tues. Sept. 13, 7p. R. 3.
