I do hope you all had a wonderful summer. Now, we are on the brink of autumn, with soon the change of the color of leaves from green to gold, red, and yellow. After such a warm summer, I am sure that many of you, like myself, are looking forward to cooler air as well! Students and teachers are now back in school ready for another academic year. Right about in the middle of September, on the 14 th, the Church celebrates a wonderful and very important feast- the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Why is this feast so important? For us as Christians, as we know, the profound symbol of our faith is the cross. Yet, the meaning of the cross may not be that explicit because it really points to a deep mystery of life and love. Now at first sight, the cross can be seen as an instrument of death and suffering. If this was all the cross meant, it would easily be a stumbling block because we usually want to avoid suffering. But when we think about Jesus offering his very life for us on the cross, what the cross was meant to do is no longer as important as what God meant it to do. In the cross, we see the intense and profound love of God for humanity, that God came into the world not to condemn the world but to save the world out of his great love for us. In the cross, we see God offering His love and His life for us. In the cross, we find healing and the forgiveness of sins. In the cross, we see the invitation to discipleship, as well as the cost of discipleship. My brother Knights, as the Lord has loved us, with a love so deep that he was willing to give of his entire self for us, not hold anything back, so to we as Knights are called to love him and to express that love through our love and service for others. In the cross, is not just the symbol of Christianity, but the reality of Christianity. And when we accept the cross, and allow ourselves to be transformed by that cross, then we will enter deeper into the mystery of life and love. Vivat Jesus! +. Vivat Jesus! Rev. Ernie Bedard OFM Cap.

From the Desk Of Our Chapter Chairman My Brother Knights As I look over my desk I see many things My beautiful wife as a high school graduate, my two brothers and I at our mothers home, mementoes of past service in the military and as a high school teacher. I have just begun to fully appreciate all my wife has done for our family. My respect for my brothers service in Korea and Vietnam, enduring 5 years of combat, humbles me. Never, let it be said that teachers have it easy because they can retire after thirty years! The rest of the articles on my desk form a history of my membership in the Knights of Columbus a set of jewels of office, a gavel, degree scripts, and uncounted pamphlets, booklets and membership forms. Why is all this here? Because I had a member of my council sit next to me at my first years meetings. He talked to me and encouraged me to get involved. He went with me to all the Chapter Meetings when I became GK. What great strides we as a Chapter could make if we all supported our new members that way after the First Degree! What ever obstacles we encounter in our service to the Knights of Columbus can be overcome with the support of our wives and fellow Knights. Thank you, my Brother Knight Francis Bestenheider. David Kibler Hudson Valley Chapter Chairman 2
