Pastor s Page Dear Friends, To emphasize the importance of the Sacrament of Confirmation, especially since our 9 th graders will be Confirmed this Tuesday, I asked Deacon Lachlan to use his page to write about the Sacrament. Additionally, below, I am printing an article about Confirmation, written by Pope Francis on May 30 th, 2018, just a few months ago. Enjoy the article! Fr. Grieco Dear brothers and sisters: In our catechesis on the sacrament of Confirmation, we have seen that it is a further spiritual anointing that completes the grace of Baptism and leads to the Eucharist. The rite of Confirmation recalls and renews the promises made at Baptism and invokes a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at His baptism in order to carry out His messianic mission, the Church prays that we too may receive the gifts and fruits of the Spirit that enables us to help the Body of Christ grow in unity and missionary zeal. The gift of the Spirit is communicated through the Laying on of hands and anointing with sacred chrism. Saint Paul sheds lights on the meaning of these sacramental signs when he says that God has anointed us, by putting His seal on us and giving us His Spirit in our hearts (2 Cor 1:21-22). Sealed with the Holy Spirit, we are configured more closely to Christ and strengthened to bear witness to Him in our world. May each of us grow in gratitude for the gift received at over Confirmation and open our hearts ever more fully to the creativity of the Spirit who makes all things new. Pope Francis (30 May 2018) We have 42 teenage candidates from our parish who will be Confirmed this Tuesday at 3:00 P.M. Please keep them in your prayers as they receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Thank you! -2-

Deacon Lachlan This coming Tuesday, 42 of our young men and women will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is regarded as one of the three Sacraments of Initiation, the three being... Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. Most of us receive confirmation in our teenage years, usually around 8 th or 9 th grade. The Church considers us to be mature enough in our faith to accept the responsibilities that come with the graces we receive in the Sacrament. Confirmation is regarded as the perfection of Baptism, because, as the introduction to the Rite of Confirmation states: By the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. The Sacrament of Confirmation confers special graces of the Holy Spirit upon the person being confirmed, just as such graces were granted to the Apostles on Pentecost. Like Baptism, therefore, it can only be performed once..and Confirmation increases and deepens all of the graces granted at Baptism. During the Confirmation Rite, the bishop extends his hands over those to be confirmed, and calls down the Holy Spirit upon them. The essential element however, is the anointing of the confirmandi (those being confirmed) with chrism, an aromatic oil which has been consecrated by the bishop of each diocese. As each person is anointed, the bishop will say, Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. This seal is a consecration, representing the safeguarding by the Holy Spirit of the graces received at Baptism. The secular dictionary tells us that the word confirmation means verification or final proof. In the Sacrament of Confirmation we have been proven..we have been verified as ready to go out into the world as fully fledged disciples or as the Confirmation rite tells us.. we become true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. That is why we receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit, so that we are prepared to carry out our mission. Sadly..many of us see confirmation as some sort of graduation I did what I had to do and now I m finished. Confirmation should actually be the beginning of a new more mature phase in our lives as followers of Jesus Christ. Just as He sent His Holy Spirit down on the Apostles at that first Pentecost.when they were confused and afraid..at confirmation He once again sends His Holy Spirit down upon each one of us. The same Holy Spirit bearing the same Gift that the Apostles received and yet for many of us the outcome is so very different. Why is that do you think? Is it because, very often, we are just not open to receiving the Gift of the Holy Spirit? Confirmation comes and goes...and nothing changes in our spiritual life. If that s the case then we need to make things change. We need to mature in our faith, rather than be stuck at perhaps 4 th, 5 th or 6 th grade level. At each parish the Pastor presents the confirmandi to the bishop, and he tells the bishop that these young men and women are properly prepared to receive the Sacrament. He doesn t tell the bishop that they know everything they will ever need to know about our faith. The Pastor is telling the bishop that they know and understand their faith up to this point.but are now ready to take the next step and to proceed to a new and fuller understanding of the faith. And that takes some work! Not that its hard work..rather it s a desire to grow closer to God, to put God first in our life. To build a relationship with God. And where do we start? At the Eucharist we come to Mass each Sunday to worship the God who created us the God who loves us the God who wants only good things for us. When we worthily receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus in the Eucharist we participate in what is the closest thing to heaven on earth. We are drawn into.and become part of. the great Mystery the Body of Christ. How very blessed we are. May Almighty God Bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from following Jesus? PARISH OFFERING The collection for last week, Sunday, October 7 th, 2018 was $8,734 Your kindhearted generosity to Holy Spirit Church is very much appreciated. October 14, 2018 28 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Christian author C.S. Lewis once wrote that Christianity is not so much about being nice people but in being new men. We see this contrast in today s Gospel. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus first answers in the predictable way. Follow the commandments! Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth. Perhaps for some of us it s easy to answer this way. I m a good person! he seems to reply. Does he truly follow all the commandments he professes to follow? Does he in word and deed check off all the boxes of the moral law? Perhaps. Whether he s being honest or fudging the truth, Jesus accepts his answer at face value with compassion. Jesus, looking at him, loved him. But he s not done yet! Jesus wants to remind us that this attitude alone is not enough. Go, sell what you have then come, follow Me. Jesus invitation to the young man is radical. Abandon everything that gives you any sense of security. Give it all up for an unknown future with a wandering preacher. The Christian life is not easy. How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It s easier, Jesus says, for a gigantic camel to squeeze itself through a tiny needle s eye. But the God of the universe creates out of nothing, breaks the bars of hell, and raises the dead to life. Is a needle s eye really such an obstacle? Jesus invitation is always bigger than our own limitations. This week, what do we need to offer up? How is Jesus inviting us to follow Him? Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who keep attachments - of any sort - from distracting them from their spiritual work.
