Have a safe Mardi Gras season and enjoy yourselves. If you need transportation or don t drive at night, contact me at 391-2233. Pro Life Corner - Don & Dee Caskey Home 341-4512 or Cell 884-0101 dcaskey53@yahoo.com Well we have started this year running. The Community Center for Life's Baby Bottle campaign went well. They provided two people for each mass to assist not 3 only in handing out bottles, they were there to answer any questions the people may have had. Both directors (Miss. Deya and Miss. Ashley) attended each with one volunteer. We were blessed with donations right there on the spot, it is too early for any return totals. Please remember to try to assist us this month on the 9th and 10th for the next campaign at St Anthony for both masses. I am ecstatic to report that the annual Pro-Life March in Washington D.C. was a tremendous success with the largest attendance ever. I haven't heard any actual numbers but several estimates all said that it was "Huge" as our pro-life president would say. He "attended" via a recorded video offering continued support for our cause. Our Vice-President and his lovely bride spoke and it was a very proud moment for life and freedom of expressing our faith. Our Supreme Knight talked and we also had a video. In case you haven't heard, the Knights of Columbus has donated ONE THOUSAND ultrasound machines to clinics. He even invited all able men to join the knights. He s a great man to follow, Atta Boy Carl! It is a sad statement that our main stream national press had minimal coverage on this event, but covered the next day's march in Washington. Another victory happened that weekend was that Dr. Kathy Allen the founder and director of Black Advocates for Life was the Keynote speaker at the January Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration at St. Joseph the Worker in Marrero. This was for another organization similar to ours

that I have been trying to get involved with Pro-Life activities with minimal support or results. My Heartfelt gratitude goes to Dr. Allen for the strong witness for life issues she gave. I do believe that the tide may be turning. As a final note, that organization had some people in attendance from their National Office. 4 Fr. Francis Offia The Different Ways the Church Has Been Responding The Dallas Charter! The PPF: A Focus on the Church in the United States In the past four consecutive Sundays I have tried to provide us with the interviews given by Archbishop Aymond, Fr. Jim Wehner (The Rector of Notre Dame Seminary) and Fr Kurt Young (the director of vocations for the Archdiocese of New Orleans) regarding the process of screening and accepting men who have express the interest to go into the seminary to discern for the priesthood in the Archdiocese. As we move forward, I humbly wish to also draw our attention to what is in place on a national level with regard to ensuring effective and efficient formation of men who become priest in the United States. And my goal for doing this still remain one thing to try to restore HOPE for the future of the Church not only in the country but also in the world at large. I am a strong advocate of the better future for the Church. And my strong conviction based on the series of structures that have already been put in place to make sure that not only that men who are going into the priesthood receive adequate formation/preparation but also to keep everyone safe more especially the weak and vulnerable kids. First there is the famous 2002 Dallas Charter by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Right on the webpage of the Conference we read: The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People is a comprehensive set of procedures originally established by the USCCB in June 2002 for addressing allegations of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy. The Charter also includes guidelines for reconciliation, healing, accountability, and prevention of future acts of abuse. It was revised in 2005, 2011, and 2018. The Charter directs action in all the following matters: Creating a safe environment for children and young people. Healing and reconciliation of victims and survivors. Making prompt and effective response to allegations. Cooperating with civil authorities. Disciplining offenders. Providing for means of accountability for the future to ensure the problem continues to be effectively dealt with through the secretarial of Child and Youth Protection and National Review Board.

From what we have known of recent, the guidelines given in this charter may have helped tremendously at least since 2002 to prevent, may be not completely, the ugly events of the abuse of minors and the vulnerable as was the in the yesteryears, however, there is an indication that some improvement is very urgent. But, if the grand jury report in Pennsylvania (and only in Pennsylvania) shows that out of the cases investigated (1000 victims and 300 perpetrators), it is only two cases that happened between 2002 and 2018 and that the two were reported to the authority, then maybe we should hope that the structures are working though they may not be perfect yet. Second, there is also the Program of Priestly Formation (PPF) which its most recent revision was based on St. John Paul II s Pastores Dabo Vobis (I shall give you a Shepherd). This document from the Bishops Conference is in the possession of almost every seminarian and all the seminaries in the United States, and it states in clear terms what the formation of men who are discerning priesthood should look like. Personally I was given a copy the 1 st week I arrived at Notre Dame Seminary and I have retained that copy till this date. One of the paragraphs in this document is worth putting down here: 5 Weaknesses of ethical standards and a moral relativism have a corrosive effect on American public life as seen, for example, in marriage and family life, in business, and in politics. This ethical environment has affected the Church herself, for example, as seen in the scandalous behavior of some clergy who have abused minors and engaged in sexual misconduct, causing great suffering for the victims and damaging the Church s witness in society. Both the nation and the Church in the nation are summoned to renewal and to a greater integrity of life. The Charter for the Protection of Young People and the Essential Norms adopted by the Catholic bishops in the United States in 2002 (revised in 2005) provide an example of moving in this direction. And so as we grapple with the reality of the evil of clergy sex abuse which spanned for decade, as we pray for healing for the victims and survivors, as we work together to pick up our pieces as a church and move on, let us see in these already existing structures in place as source of Hope and Confidence. There is no doubt that sustained and build on these structures, the church will come out of this difficult times much stronger and vibrant in faith. Happy Valentine s Day February 14
