SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The great English Dominican Bede Jarrett, in his beautiful biography of St. Dominic, described how the earliest members of the community lived, quoting from one of the early Dominicans, Galvano Flamma: Each friar was permitted to have in his cell a crucifix and a statue of Our Lady so that at prayer, at study, or at rest, he might contemplate them and remember himself to be in turn contemplated by Sovereign Mercy, for the image of the crucified is the book of life spread open, to which our eyes are to be raised and whence cometh our help. The new crucifix for our main church, the work of Andrew Praszczyk (of B & A Atelier Studio in Nazareth, PA) is meant to be just that for the people of our parish. For their work to carry this project off, I would like to thank Fr. Roy, who organized the musical concert that raised money to pay for it and who solicited donations to meet its remaining cost and contributed design suggestions for the crucifix, as well as our facilities director Tom Meli, who helped with the practicalities of its installation. Andrew will repair the old crucifix, which will be redeployed in the parish. Further touch-up painting work will also be done on the wall behind the crucifix. JOHN 3:16 Msgr. David Hubba 2

RYAN 1929-2018 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing on December 2, 2018 of longtime Saint Joseph parishioner Gladys Ryan. Gladys was one of the beautiful voices of our Choir for many. many years. She assisted her beloved husband, SJC Music Direcgtor of 45 years, Bill Ryan, with the Children s Choir. She was the dear mother of son, William F. Ryan and his wife Jean, and daughter, Patricia Wiener and her late husband Herb. She will be missed by dear family friend Father Joseph Coda, as well as five loving grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Saint Joseph Church on December 6. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Eternal rest grant unto her soul, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. JOHN 1:1 3

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ TAKE A TAG THE INCARNATION: THE MYSTERY OF LIFE IN THE WOMB SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, are located in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Sunday, December 16. You may place them under the tree in church or drop them off at the Rectory/Parish Office. AN ADVENT REFLECTION BY FR. For more information, please call 201-768-7565. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE FEAST DAY: DECEMBER 12 On December 9, 1531, Our Lady appeared to a simple Aztec Indian who had converted to the Catholic faith, Juan Diego. Three days later, at Juan Diego's request, Mary provided a sign so the local bishop would believe that she actually had appeared. Roses grew out of the cold winter soil, and when Juan Diego opened his cloak to show the bishop what he had found, an image of Our Lady appeared on the fabric. These occurrences led to the conversion of most of Mexico and remain today a strong sign of Our Lady's concern and love for us. Church-approved Marian apparitions always point to Mary s Son, Jesus. For many of us with a strong Marian devotion, Mary is a pathway into a stronger relationship with our Lord. Her generosity shown to Juan Diego is the same generosity shown to each of us that choose to ask her intercession. Families pray for one another and she is a very prominent member of our family. May the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe be a sign of warmth for you in the cold of winter and of Advent hope for a Christ Child that has redeemed the world.
