ST. ANTHONY FRATERNITY NEWSLETTER Fraternity #101 Volume 21 Issue 05 May 2018 FROM OUR SPIRITUAL ASSISTANT Dear sisters and brothers in St. Francis As children, few of us were not embarrassed and frustrated to be discovered in the wrong by a parent or someone else we looked up to. I dare say (for me, anyway) it feels the same way in my mind, throat, heart, stomach and knees. The difference is that I work with the Gift of Courage from the Holy Spirit to face and rectify my boo-boo. Probably, a similar emotional scaffolding shook the lives of Jesus followers. Appearing before them, what the Apostles and Disciples heard that is, Jesus is risen they now beheld. But, could they believe their eyes? We know that, eventually, they did believe even Thomas. One thing this says to us as Franciscans, is that we are challenged to rely on one another as we travel toward Jesus through the good example and challenging writings of St. Francis. How each of us reads, reflects, and exemplifies Francis through Jesus is how our Fraternity becomes more Christianly Franciscan. May the Lord give you PEACE. And may you give it to everyone in need, Br. Gordon Spiritual Assistant TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT FROM OUR MINISTER Brothers and Sisters, As we anticipate the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, we are reminded that the Holy Spirit completes our perfect Triune God. It all begins with our Father the Almighty, Eternal God. It continues with the love of our Father which is manifested in the incarnation of His Son. It is completed in the perfect unity of the Holy Spirit who breathes LIFE into each and every one of us. The underlying, reciprocal love that our perfect God has for us and us for Him, is a mystery to many but, for Franciscans, it is a knowing and a being. As professed Third Order Franciscans, we know that we are parts of the body of Christ responsible for witnessing the power of God s message. Being in the love of Christ helps us to live the Gospel as is required by our very profession. The Holy Spirit is not a symbol, but the symbol of the breath of the Holy Spirit gives us life to carry out our witness; the symbol of the fire of the Holy Spirit ignites our hearts with the flame of truth to carry out our witness; the symbol of the dove of the Holy Spirit gives us the peace we need to carry out our witness. COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME Your sis, Israela 1

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE APRIL GATHERING Our Gathering began with the Liturgy of the Hours for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, prepared by the Prayer Team. Brother Gordon spoke on today s readings for Good Shepherd Sunday. He recalled that he first saw sheep on the hoof on the Navajo Reservation. Goats helped keep the flock from wandering. Pastor means shepherd. The staffs the Pope and other bishops carry are based on the shepherd s crook, used to pull sheep back from harm. Like Francis, we need to shepherd each other. For Ongoing Formation, Israela shared an excerpt from the FUN Manual, which is a training manual for the Council. St. Bonaventure speaks of gasping for God the way you gasp for air while drowning. God is constantly gasping for us! We shared on several questions, including: When was the last time I gasped for God?, and How much time do I devote to contemplative prayer, to the silence of listening to God, each day? Rex is having robotic surgery on May 24. Gerry reminded all that our election is on July 22. Marilyn is heading the Nomination Committee, and has nominating forms and office descriptions. We all need to be involved in the fraternity in accordance with our abilities. We celebrated Clare Domenici becoming our first Affiliate member. Marilyn explained that Clare had been participating in the fraternity for quite some time, and this was an acknowledgement of her commitment. Clare received a certificate of achievement and a San Damiano cross pin. She thanked us in a moving speech. Clare s mother and other family members shared this day with her. We ended with fellowship and a good meal from Group 3. 4

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// FRATERNITY ELECTIONS IN JULY! We will be having elections at our July 22 Gathering. Offices are: Minister, Vice- Minister, Secretary, Treasurer, Formation Director, and two Councilors. At the next Gathering, we will have job descriptions available, as well as forms to nominate yourself or another for an office. We also need 2 members willing to serve on the Nomination Committee with Marilyn. Please pray about how you can help either by running for an office, or by nominating a person who would be a good fit for an office. Some of the present Council may run again, and some may not. Having different professed members willing to serve will only strengthen our fraternity. Please contact Marilyn Migliarini (505-261-1555) if you would like to be on the committee, or run for an office. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% CONTEMPLATIVE RETREAT CANCELLED Gina Lubeck reports that the contemplative retreat to be held at Annunciation Parish on May 19 has been cancelled.
