THE CHURCH OF ST. IGNATIUS IN THE CITY OF ANTIOCH OF NEW YORK The Third Sunday after the Epiphany (Dominus secus mare) 27 January 2008 Welcome to all who are worshiping with us this morning. Especially if you are a visitor or a newcomer, please make yourself known to one of the clergy and let us know if we can be of help to you. Solemn Mass 11:00 A.M. Voluntary Melodia, op. 50, no. 11 Max Reger Angelus (Prayed silently) During the first three bells, The Angel of the Lord announced unto Mary, and she conceived by the Holy Ghost. Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. During the second three bells, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. Repeat Hail, Mary. During the third three bells, And the Word was made Flesh and dwelt among us. Repeat Hail, Mary. During the final nine bells, Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts: that, as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Amen. First Lesson: Amos 3:1-8 H EAR THIS WORD that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt: You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. Do two walk together, unless they have made an appointment? Does a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Does a young lion cry out from his den, if he has taken nothing? Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth, when there is no trap for it? Does a snare spring up from the ground, when it has taken nothing? Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does evil befall a city, unless the Lord has done it? Surely the Lord God does nothing, without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy? The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gradual Mode II Timebunt gentes nomen tuum, Domine, et omnes reges terrae gloriam tuam. V. When the Lord shall build up Sion: and when his glory shall appear. [Psalm 102]

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 I APPEAL TO YOU, BRETHREN, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe s people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, I belong to Paul, or I belong to Apollos, or I belong to Cephas, or I belong to Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Alleluia Mode VIII Alleluia, alleluia. V. Dominus regnavit, exsultet terra: laetentur insulae multae. Alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. The Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof: yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof. Alleluia. [Psalm 97] The Holy Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23 People W Glory be to thee, O Lord. HEN JESUS HEARD that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. Deacon People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. 4

The Sermon Father Blume The Nicene Creed Hymnal #720 The Prayers of the People Prayer Book, page 328-330 The Confession of Sin and Absolution Prayer Book, page 330 The celebrant bids the people make a general confession of their sins. Please kneel and say together A LMIGHTY GOD, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The celebrant pronounces the absolution. Offertory Mode IV Dextera Domini fecit virtutem, dextera Domini exaltavit me: non moriar, sed vivam, et narabo opera Domini. The right hand of the Lord hath the preeminence, the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. [Psalm 118] The offerings of the people are received during the motet. Offertory Motet: Mihi autem nimis Thomas Tallis Mihi autem nimis honorati sunt amici tui, Deus: nimis confortatus est principatus eorum. The Breaking of the Bread The Prayer of Humble Access Prayer Book, page 337 W E DO NOT PRESUME to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
