Message from the Rector Dear People of God, February is half over and the cold days of winter continue. The wonderful news is each day brings us one step closer to spring!... Enjoy the following........ The Refiner Malachi 3:3 says: He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study group and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out more about the process of refining silver and report back to the group. That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She did not mention the reason for her interest, beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot then she thought again about the verse that says: He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered yes, that he not only had to sit there holding silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, How do you know when the silver is fully refined? He smiled at her and answered, Oh that s easy when I see my image in it. If on any given day you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you. And, whatever you re going through, you ll be a better person in the end, reflecting the image of God. Inner Strength If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills, If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you the time, If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can face the world without lies and deceit, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If can relax without liquor, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, If you can do all these things, Then you are probably the family dog. Food for thought, Fr. Greg P.S. Please pray for the Bishop s gathering this week with Pope Francis in Rome. Very important meeting! 2 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019

Faith Formation BOOST YOUR BELIEFS: Forgiving is a Way to Stop Hurting By the Very Rev. Greg Sakowicz Life is difficult. Life is a mystery to be lived and not a problem to be solved. We all seek forgiveness. We all need to forgive others at times in our lives. Forgiving is never easy. Cardinal Cupich says it best: Forgiving doesn t change the past, it changes the future. God loves us and forgives us always. We have to learn to forgive others and to forgive ourselves. We need to continually love this world back into life. Thursday, February 21 Parish Center Club Room, 6:30 p.m. The Very Reverend Greg Sakowicz is Rector of Holy Name Cathedral. He will celebrate 40 years of priesthood in May. He has served as Pastor of both St. Mary of the Woods Parish in Chicago and St. Mary s Parish in Evanston. Fr. ACT II... for everyone 40 and over ACT II is committed to the needs and interests of Holy Name parishioners age 40 and over. Our goal is to encourage participation and a sense of belonging within the Holy Name community by providing opportunities for SOCIAL gathering, CULTURAL & EDUCATIONAL pursuits, SPIRITUAL development and community SERVICE. SPEAKERS FORUM THIS WEEKEND A FREE PRESENTATION FOR ALL AGE GROUPS When: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17th, 1:30-3 PM Where: The CLUB ROOM in the PARISH CENTER Topic: STRESS REDUCTION TECHNIQUES Speaker: SANDRA BEATY, PhD These techniques are easy to do and bring many benefits: exercises in stretching, deep breathing, visualization, mindfulness, and positive self-talk, as well as other progressive relaxation methods. In addition, you will receive a handout to reinforce what you've learned as you perfect these exercises at home & office. BRIDGE IS IN TROUBLED WATERS It looks as though both our WEEKLY AFTERNOON and ONCE-A-MONTH EVENING COUPLES BRIDGE are in danger of disbanding due to attrition & lack of new payers to fill the vacancies. Both groups play "Social" or "Party" bridge which is deemed less serious than "Duplicate" bridge, meaning that, although the games are competitive, the emphasis is on having an enjoyable time rather than just racking up the highest score. Unfortunately, we cannot offer to teach anyone the game from scratch, but if your skills are a bit rusty or you haven't played in a while, give some thought to joining one of our groups... a great way to enhance memory & cognitive ability while having fun! The DAYTIME GROUP plays on MONDAY AFTERNOONS from 1-3 in the rectory. The EVENING COUPLES GROUP plays ONCE A MONTH on a SATURDAY EVENING, rotating between players' homes. For more information contact KATHY HAYDEN: kathleen.hayden@att.net; 312-944-7430 BOOKS TO FILM When: 6 PM, SATURDAY, MARCH 16TH Where: 1100 N. The film stars Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and John Cusack. Read the book beforehand on your own, view the film on this evening, then discuss both book and film over dessert. RSVP to CAROL HANEY: haneyhomes@yahoo.com JOIN ACT II & SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER There is no membership fee to join ACT II. No restrictions other than being 40 or older & wanting to participate.
