2 Message from the Rector Dear Lenten People, Our Lenten journey begins this week with Ash Wednesday. We are literally marked for the season of penance, forgiveness and probing deeply the areas of life which need an overhauling. What are the areas in my life that I hold onto (won t let go) which keep me from loving, living and forgiving? Many of us become our own worst enemy. Lent is a wonderful opportunity to let go and turn our lives over to the Lord Jesus. How do we do this? We need to keep life in perspective and realize God wants us to share our gifts. However, we are not the message; we are the Lord s messengers! Reflect (and smile) on the following: 1. God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts! 2. Dear God, I have a problem, it s me. 3. Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional. 4. There is no key to happiness. The door is always open. 5. Silence is often misinterpreted but never misquoted. 6. Do the math count your blessings. 7. Faith is the ability to not panic. 8. Laugh every day; it s like inner jogging. 9. If you worry, you didn t pray. If you pray, don t worry. 10. As a child of God, prayer is kind of like calling home every day. 11. Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape. 12. The most important things in your home are the people. 13. When we get tangled up in our problems, be still. God wants us to be still so God can untangle the knot. 14. A grudge is a heavy thing to carry. 15. The person who dies with the most toys is still dead. Along life s journey it is also important to realize we need each other. We are not built to be islands. As we gather around the Table of the Lord each weekend, we are the Church The Body of Christ. We are nourished by the Word of God and the Holy Eucharist and then challenged to be Christ to all those we meet in the days ahead. We are the Church and Lent is a wonderful time to recommit our lives to the Lord within the Faith Community. The following story speaks volumes read and pass it on... A man stopped going to church, so his pastor decided to pay him a home visit. It was a chilly evening and the pastor found him home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for the pastor s visit, the man welcomed him and they both sat quietly still by the fireplace, contemplating the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After a while, the pastor got up, reached for the tongs and carefully picked a burning ember from the flames, placing it on one side of the hearth. Then he returned to his chair, still silent. The host watched all this in quiet reflection. Momentarily, the lone ember glowed, but soon if flickered, died and became cold. Not a single word was exchanged since the initial greeting. The pastor soon glanced at his watch. Realizing it was time to leave, he stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and returned it to the middle of the fire where it immediately began to glow brightly in the light and warmth of the burning coals surrounding it. As his pastor opened the door to leave, the man spoke with a tear running down his cheek, Thank you for your visit and for your fiery homily. I ll be back at church next Sunday. Sometimes the very best homilies are the ones left unspoken. May we preach a homily with our lives. And speaking of homilies, here are six things you will probably never hear in Church from the congregation. 1. Hey! It s my turn to sit in the front pew! 2. I was so enthralled, I never noticed your homily went 25 minutes. 3. Personally, I find evangelizing much more enjoyable than golf. 4. I ve decided to give our church the $500 a month I used to send to the TV evangelists. 5. Since we re all here, let s start Mass early. 6. Father, we d like to send you to this Bible seminar in Hawaii. On the Lenten Journey with you, Fr. Greg 2 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 11, 2018

3 We Remember and Celebrate Upcoming Weddings at the Cathedral II. Shawn Flood & Gianna Mudd Parking Lot Update Dear People of God, As you may have recently seen, the development plan for the parking lot across the street from the Cathedral was recently approved by the City s Plan and Zoning Commissions. These important approvals keep the development on track, with construction currently anticipated to begin this fall. Once a more firm date is set, we will let everyone know. Since our parking lot will be closed during the construction period, I am delighted to announce that our wonderful neighbor, Loyola University, has agreed to let us utilize their parking lot on Chicago Avenue, directly north of our present lot. This is convenient to the Cathedral and provides 90 spaces to accommodate the demand for many during the weekend Masses. The lot will be available to us from Saturday at 7:00am through Sunday evening at 10:00pm. We anticipate that the lot will be patrolled by our parking attendant to assist with traffic flow, especially between crowded Masses. In addition, we are working to secure more parking spaces in other surrounding parking garages to supplement the Loyola University lot to have parking available for weekday activities as well as additional parking spaces for the weekend. We will update you as those plans are finalized. I m grateful to Loyola University for their willingness to assist us on the weekends to ensure that our Mass attendance will not be impacted. We anticipate that this arrangement will be necessary for months, until our 225 new parking spots (an increase from our current 190 spaces) within the development will be available to us. 4 Order of Worship Sign of Peace & Communion from the Cup During Cold & Flu Season: As we enter this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact and that some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Sign of Peace, but might simply greet you with a smile. If you do decide to come to church for Mass, please remember that frequent and thorough hand - washing, refraining from physical contact during the Sign of Peace, and refraining from receiving communion from the Chalice can help prevent the spread of germs. 6 Liturgy CONCERNS ABOUT COMMUNION & FLU What is the Flu? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Every year in the United States, on average: 5-20% of the population gets the flu and more than 200,000 are hospitalized from flu complications. (See the CDC website at How does the Flu Spread? According to the CDC, The flu spreads in respiratory droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. It usually spreads from person to person, though occasionally a person may become infected by touching something with virus on it and then touching their mouth or nose. Preventing the Flu Common sense is most important for the prevention of the flu. While a flu vaccination is helpful, the CDC recommends the follow health habits in all areas of our life: Stay home when you are sick, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, clean your hands regularly with water and soap or an alcohol based anti-bacterial wash, avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth, refrain from the Communion cup if you are feeling sick or at risk for infection. Holy Communion from the Cup As with past concerns about the flu, the CDC has not indicated a need for any changes in our practice of offering the Communion cup. Also, it is always left to the discretion of each individual as to whether they will receive from the Communion cup. If the above mentioned preventative health habits are followed and all ministers of Holy Communion are cognizant of the following reminders the chances for infection are greatly diminished. 11 Stewardship Pope Francis' 10 inspirational messages for Lent God can give us the strength to change our lives. Lent comes providentially to reawaken us, to shake us from our lethargy." There is a need for conversion. There is something not right with us, with our society, with the church and we need to change, to turn, to convert!" There is more to simply giving up our bad habits this lent. Conversion can't be reduced to exterior forms or vague resolutions, but involves and transforms one's entire existence, starting with the center of the person, the conscience." To experience the real value of lent, we have to learn how to pray amidst the difficult circumstances. In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could lead to a hardness of heart, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of the boundless love of God, in order to experience his tenderness." Recognize that God has given you so much even though we are not deserving and give it to those who are in need instead. Almsgiving also helps free people from the obsession of possession, from the fear of losing what they have and from the sadness of not sharing their well-being with others." There is no act of mercy that is too little not to be recognized. A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just. Set aside power, glory and wealth. Create equality and remove differences by sharing. God's becoming man is a great mystery! But the reason for all this is his love, a love which is grace, generosity, a desire to draw near, a love which does not hesitate to offer itself in sacrifice for the beloved." Give up something that will be beneficiary to others. Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty." There is more to poverty that being stripped of your power and wealth. There is only one real kind of poverty: not living as children of God and brothers and sisters of Christ." Sought out the poor and sinners. Open out doors to evangelization. The Gospel is the real antidote to spiritual destitution: wherever we go, we are called as Christians to proclaim the liberating news that forgiveness for sins committed is possible, that God is greater than our sinfulness, that he freely loves us at all times and that we were made for communion and eternal life." ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Ash Wednesday Announcement This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine s Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine s Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance. 12 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 11, 2018
