We are called to keep watch and to leave behind our sinful ways. We also hear the recurring theme of a light shining through the darkness. Isaiah 60:19 reminds us of this promise: "The sun shall be no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory." Since circles have no beginning and no end, the circular shape of many Advent wreaths is used to symbolize God the Father and eternal life. The wreath ( o r candleholder ) holds four Advent candles which are lit one by one throughout the four weeks of Advent. The burning flame is a visual reminder that Christ is "the light of the world." ( John 8:12 ). There are three violet ( p urple ) candles and one rose ( pink ) candle, each representing 1,000 years. Added together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for the Savior. It focuses on the heart of the pope's meditations on the famous "Love is patient and kind" passage from 1 Corinthians 13. Interspersed throughout the book are short prayers and questions for reflection designed to help you open your heart to God and experience His unconditional, merciful love more fully. There is a suggested $5 donation to pay for the books. Contact Janet Koller if you are interested ( so we can have enough books ) at 641-325-1649 or by e-mail at jjkoller77@gmail.com. Weekend Collection Report for December 2 & 3 Please Remember Our Parish Family When Considering A Year-end Gift Your generosity has been a blessing to St. Mary s throughout this past year. Your continued support allows us to help our church family and spread God's Word. As you begin year-end tax planning, take advantage of the charitable tax deduction for gifts made before December 31 and consider the variety of gift options available to you, such as to our general fund, the Deacons Fund and our Capital campaign. Your gift to our parish can make a great difference to us and help you as well. WeShare is a convenient way to make your gift to St. Mary s parish. You can find a link to WeShare on the front page of our website. CHRIST OUR LIFE On December 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Grinnell Central Park, a group of Grinnell residents will hold a vigil in memory of the killings of 26 children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut five years ago. Since that day in 2012, an estimated 500,000 Americans have been killed or injured by gun violence. Speakers at the vigil will include Grinnellians moved by gun violence including Dr. J.R. Paulson, Rev. Dondrea Walker and Patrick Armstrong. Amber Gustafson, cofounder of Moms Demand Action Iowa and current Iowa Senate candidate, will also make remarks. Music will be provided by Too Many String Band. Wendy Abrahamson, priest of St. Paul s Episcopal Church and Cameron Barr, minister of the United Church of Christ, will offer the invocation. The vigil is one of 229 such gatherings being held in forty states. Vicky Springer, one of the event planners, says the vigil is the culmination of twenty-six days of action against gun violence, a series of meetings, film showings and other events designed to raise awareness about gun violence and promote civil discourse among gun owners and those concerned about gun violence prevention. Another organizer, Kesho Scott, said, Our efforts as a grassroots group have focused on fostering local dialogue, raising awareness about the NRA s role in federal and state politics, and underscoring the need for citizens to contact their elected officials regarding gun legislation. She added, By holding this vigil, we are simply bearing witness to the terrible toll that gun violence takes on our society. Everyone is invited to participate.
