FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY FEBRUARY 9-10, 2019 AS WE GATHER During the season of Epiphany, which means shine forth, the Readings shine forth to us the real, biblical Jesus. So far this season we have seen how Jesus turned water into wine, how He taught with an authority never heard before, and how He cast out demons and healed the sick. Now this week we hear that Jesus calls disciples to be catching people. God calls. He calls individual people such as Isaiah and Peter, and groups of people such as the Twelve and the Church today. As God called Isaiah in a spectacular vision to speak God s Word in a world marred by sin, so He calls us, the Church, to do the same. As Jesus called Peter to go from catching fish to catching men, so He calls us, the Church, to do the same. What God has done for all of creation in the death and resurrection of Jesus will not be kept silent. God calls us to speak the Gospel in a sin-marred world and to live in ways that demonstrate the power of the Gospel. [Sunday] PRE-K AND KINDERGARTEN "Jesus Loves You Pass it On" HYMN Hail to the Lord's Anointed LSB 398 Stand CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. 1

P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as an ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. SERVICE OF THE WORD INTROIT Ps. 71:15 18; antiphon: Ps. 71:12 P O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me! C My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. P With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. C O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. P So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me! 2

KYRIE LSB 186 C Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS LSB 187 P Glory be to God on High, C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee. we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav'nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And with thy spirit. P Let us pray. O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 6:1 8 1In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he 3

covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! 4And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And he touched my mouth and said: Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for. 8And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I! Send me. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. GRADUAL Ps. 117:1 2a; 96:8 P Praise the LORD, all nations! C Extol him, all peoples! P For great is his steadfast love toward us, C and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. P Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; C bring an offering, and come into his courts! EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 14:12b 20 12So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. 13Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say Amen to your 4

thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand ALLELUIA C Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 5:1 11 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fifth chapter. C Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 1On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on [Jesus] to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. 5 And Simon answered, Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets. 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be 5

catching men. 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. [Saturday] NICENE CREED C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, 6

and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. [Sunday] APOSTLES CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Stand OFFERTORY LSB 192 C Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P Having heard God s call to follow Jesus, let us bring before Him the needs and concerns of the church, the world, and ourselves. For all who call on the name of Jesus throughout the world and for our own church body, that those who receive the call to preach do it well by the power of the Holy Spirit, that all who are called to ministry tasks fulfill our callings with humility and grace for the building up of the Body of Christ, that missionaries called to various places in the world, speak the Gospel with clarity and live in ways that draw people to following Christ, that You would guide Rev. Joe Hoem as he considers our Call to be Pastor. Holy God, C in Your mercy, hear our prayer. P For nations throughout the world, that governments and leaders strive for peace among nations, that care for the poor and justice for the oppressed never be neglected or forgotten, that those who serve in our armed forces fulfill their responsibilities well, that those victimized by warfare and terrorism find comfort and hope in Christ, that we and our enemies become reconciled, Holy God, C in Your mercy, hear our prayer. P For the needs of our local community, that businesses flourish for the good of all, that workers do their work with a sense of vocation, giving glory to God, that those with difficult jobs be assured that their labor is not in vain and that God is with them, that corruption and injustice decrease, and integrity, honesty, and responsibility increase, Holy God, C in Your mercy, hear our prayer. P For the needs of our church community, that those who are sick, [especially...], experience healing according to God s will, that 8

those with chronic or terminal diseases find comfort and hope in God s promise never to leave them nor forsake them, that our elders and council lead us not only to consider our own needs, but also the needs of others, that the households of our congregation be places of forgiveness, peace, and genuine love, that we who are gathered here today for worship hear our Lord s call and welcome newcomers in our midst, Holy God, C in Your mercy, hear our prayer. P In thanksgiving for those who have gone before us in faith and now rest from the labors of this life, [including...], that as they heard the call to follow Jesus and received His forgiveness and mercy, so we, too, live in the mercy of Christ now and into all eternity, Holy God, C in Your mercy, hear our prayer. P These, and all of our prayers that remain unspoken or are too deep for words, we commend to You, Holy God, in trust that You hear us, You love us, and You desire our well-being; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Sunday's service continues with the Lord's Prayer SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT PREFACE LSB 194 P The Lord be with you. C And with thy spirit. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them up unto the Lord. P Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. C It is meet and right so to do. P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and 9

with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS LSB 195 C Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, blessed is He, blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. LORD'S PRAYER LSB 196 P Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. C For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
