Who We Are North Star Bible Institute (NSBI) was founded in 1975 by then pastor of FBBC, James Modlish. The intent was to provide more for those who were not content with a couple of sermons from the pulpit each week. NSBI was one year in length, about 200 hours of classroom work. In 1979 it became obvious that there was a need for greater scope and depth in biblical training. The church grew numerically through this period of time and the hunger for the Word, and the need for more and better trained ministers and volunteers was evident. As young and older men and women sensed the call to ministry, NSBI was expanded to a three year program. By 1985 a four year curriculum was developed that seemed to satisfy sincere and interested students. This is the model we follow even today. The primary purpose of NSBI is to provide sound biblical teaching with hands-on opportunities for practical experience every day in the local church. We saw that we had a great opportunity by providing academic and theological training coupled with practical everyday ministry experiences. NSBI has graduated over 120 alumni; many serve as pastors, missionaries, local church ministers and teachers in over 15 countries. We pursue every practical way to teach and provide ministry opportunities. We attempt to be sensitive to our social and technical culture. It is our goal to inspire Christians to love God, love people, serve others, and to tell everyone. What We Believe The list below identifies what we believe to be the core and orthodox truths of the Christian faith. We believe the AV1611 is a completely reliable copy of the preserved Word of God in the English language. We choose not to correct it, but allow it to correct us. 2
General Information The NSBI course structure has been designed in such a way that, on the whole, no courses are prerequisites for other courses in the curriculum. There are few and obvious exceptions. If there was an emphasis on course building and the necessary enrollment in some courses before others, the student would have to wait until the beginning of a four-yearcycle in order to step in and start at just the right time. Certainly, some courses will require some more general background than others, but the student can usually plan on enrolling in courses at any point in the four-year-cycle and (regardless of whether he or she is in the Servant s Diploma, ThG, BD, or the BA program) finishing up four years from that point. Courses are generally offered in the evening. Class days and times are published well in advance of the beginning of each semester. Instructors have the authority to alter schedules as needed with sufficient notification to the students. Classes may be taken in a variety of ways: traditional classroom, Life Group format, Video and Independent studies. For the most part, courses are scheduled to accommodate the students, much like an evening graduate program at many colleges and universities. For example, a two credit hour course would not be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays for an hour each night; rather, it would be offered on one night only for two straight hours (including breaks). There are many advantages to this system. Chiefly, it is an efficient use of teaching time, and it allows more freedom to the student s schedule. Accreditation The provisions of this catalog are not to be regarded as an irrevocable contract between NSBI and the Student. NSBI reserves the right to change any provision or requirement at any time. North Star Bible Institute is not accredited by any regional accrediting association. We have found other accredited colleges and theological schools to accept our degrees toward graduate studies. For further information, contact the Director of NSBI. Plagiarism Plagiarism is the representation of someone else s ideas and/or words as one s own. In academic circles, it is chiefly the use of someone else s material without giving them the credit which is their due. It is a serious ethical and moral infraction. (If there is any question as to what plagiarism is, please consult Prose Style: A Handbook for Writers, pp. 253-258, by Wilfred Stone and J.G. Hill ( 1968, 1972, by McGraw-Hill, Inc.). Any student found plagiarizing will automatically fail the course for which the evidence of plagiarism was submitted as either a partial or full course expectation. In other words, if a paper (for example) for a given course is found to have plagiarized material therein, the student submitting such a paper will fail the course in question, regardless of how much or how little that paper would have contributed to the total grade of the course. Any questions about this policy may be directed to the Administration. In addition, cheating, violating copyright laws and license agreements, denying others appropriate access to information, destroying, altering, or tampering with someone else s work is also unacceptable. In each situation, appropriate action will take place as per offence. 3
The North Star Bible Institute Degree Programs The NSBI Servant s Diploma is designed to prepare local church members for service as ministers and leaders in the local church. The curriculum is specifically chosen to give the student a wide range of experience and education in the most important subjects that we offer. The Graduate of Theology degree, usually completed in four years (and the degree for which the curriculum was originally designed), demands a completion of 100 credit hours, or an average of about eleven to twelve credit hours of classes per semester. The Bachelor of Divinity degree requires completion of 110 credit hours, but demands more required courses than the Graduate of Theology. The Bachelor of Arts degree was added in 2017. These courses, English, Psychology, and History, are designed to fulfill the general education requirements that most colleges and universities require for entrance into their graduate programs. Graduate schools may admit a certain percentage of incoming students to their programs without accredited undergraduate degrees if the student will meet certain criteria. Specific courses required for the degrees are taken in conjunction with various electives. Courses required for graduation are so noted in the curriculum schedules in this catalog and are subject to change at the Director s discretion. Depending upon the semester, there are a number of hours that are required classes, and a full-time student may fill the remainder of his or her schedule in any given semester with those electives. 4

Course Descriptions Books of the Bible North Star Bible Institute is first and foremost a Bible Institute in that approximately 50 books of the Bible are taught verse by verse. The primary goal in teaching is expositional in nature, emphasizing the context, historical setting, authorship, and practical application. Careful attention is given to hermeneutics and companion passages. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works (II Timothy 3:16-17). All courses are valued at two credit hours each with the exception of Genesis, Systematic Theology & Church History, which are taught over the course of two semesters and valued at four credit hours. Genesis (4) - A verse-by-verse study of the book of beginnings which covers over 2,300 years of Bible history. Exodus (2) - A verse-by-verse study of the redemption of Israel from Egypt. Practical in its application to the Christian s redemption and call from the world. Joshua & Judges (2) - A verse-by-verse study of Israel s conquest and failures in the Promised Land. Practical to the Christian s victories and failures. 1 & 2 Samuel (2) - Factual and historical approach, done verse-by-verse. Practical in its application. 1 & 2 Kings (2) - Factual and historical approach, done verse-by-verse. Practical in its application. Job (2) - A verse-by-verse study. The central theme is Why do the righteous suffer? Psalms (2) - An examination of the various types and classifications of the 150 Psalms. The contents of many of those Psalms are studied and applied. Daniel (2) - A doctrinal and prophetic study of a very controversial Old Testament book, done verse-by-verse from a dispensational, theological perspective. Minor Prophets (2) - A study (mostly verse-by-verse) of the Minor Prophets. This course covers practical and doctrinal aspects of the books of Hosea through Malachi. Matthew (2) - An important study into what is perhaps the most transitional of all transitional books. Special attention is given to the Jewish character of the book, and the doctrines that stem from it. Mark (2) - A verse-by-verse study of Jesus the Minister. John (2) - A verse-by-verse study. The richness of this gospel provides broad doctrinal and inspirational backdrop. Acts (2) - A verse-by-verse study of the New Testament and the beginning of the Christian Church. A theological and historical approach. Romans (2) - The hub of Pauline doctrine is closely examined and discussed verse-by-verse. 1 & 2 Corinthians (2) - A practical and doctrinal verse-by-verse study. 8
Galatians through Colossians (2) - A verse-by-verse examination of some of the meat of Pauline doctrine. The Five T s (2) - The doctrines of Pauline theology are examined verse-by-verse in this study of 1 & 2 Thessalonians, 1 & 2 Timothy, and Titus. Hebrews & James (2) - A careful theological approach is taken to these verse-by-verse studies. 1 Peter through Jude (2) - A verse-by-verse study of the books that are among the most misunderstood and misapplied in the Bible. The doctrines that are taught in these books are the primary concern of this course. Revelation (2) - The magnum opus of New Testament prophecy is carefully considered verse by verse. Principles of sound hermeneutics are conscientiously applied. Various perspectives examined. Other Courses Apologetics (2) The word apologetics is derived from the Greek word apologia which was originally used of a speech of defense or an answer given in reply. Simply defined for our purposes, it consists of the primary arguments for the defense of the Christian faith. Archaeology and Geography (2) - A detailed study of the history and geography of the Biblical world. Biblical Law (2) - This course will give understanding of the laws and guidelines instituted by God to govern mankind. These Biblical principles will give insight into the proper ways that governments should function even in our world today. Big Picture Bible Study, Old Testament (1) Like the picture on a puzzle box, the Big Picture gives the student a panorama view of the Old Testament emphasizing chronology, main characters, the place of the nation of Israel, geography and a simple but comprehensive story line. Big Picture Bible Study, New Testament (1) Like the picture on a puzzle box, the Big Picture gives the student a panorama view of the New Testament emphasizing The Gospels and Life of Christ, the establishment of the Church, the writings of Paul the Apostle, Peter, James, Jude and John, culminating in the Revelation and Eschatology. Church 101 (1) Church 101 offers the student an overarching view of the ministries of FBBC emphasizing leadership, evangelism, discipleship, worship and service. It is designed to help the new Christian understand what a local church is designed to be and aid the believer in finding his or her place in the body. Church Administration (2) - The nuts and bolts of this very necessary (but often neglected) area. Financial, personal, and legal issues are discussed in depth. Church History I (2) - A survey of the history of the Church starting with the Apostles through the Reformation. The influences and religious assaults on the Christians will be discussed also to see how some of the practices of the church today came to be. Church History II (2) - A continuation of Church History I. Starting after the Reformation to the modern era. This course will examine not only the great Christian leaders, but also the movements these men initiated. What made them great? What made them cease? Will we learn from them today? 9
Comparative Religions (2) - An examination of various religions and their doctrines. Practical conclusions are drawn concerning how to best engage different belief systems. Dispensationalism (2) is a theological system that teaches biblical history is best understood in light of a number of successive administrations of God s dealings with mankind. It maintains fundamental distinctions between God s plans for the nation of Israel and the New Testament Church with particular emphasis on end times prophetical themes. English I & II Literary Survey and Genre Writing 1 and 2 is an overview of English Literature and an introduction to reading and writing in various genres. Greek I (2) - This course is intended for students who are beginning the study of the Greek testament without any previous acquaintance with the Greek language. Greek II (2) - Prerequisite: Greek I - This course builds upon the foundation of Greek I. Greek III (2) - Prerequisite: Greek II - This course builds upon the foundation of Greek II. Greek IV (2) - Prerequisite: Greek III - This course builds upon the foundation of Greek III. History of the Bible (2) A study examining where the Bible came from and how the Canon of the Scripture was formed. Also a look at Manuscript Evidence, including Textual Criticism and the philosophy of translating the foundational texts. Homiletics I (2) - Discussion of principles of preaching giving opportunity for the practical use thereof. Homiletics II (2) - Discussion of principles of preaching giving opportunity for practical use thereof. Homiletics I is not necessarily a prerequisite. Introduction to Counseling (2) - Principles of sound counseling are examined and practical advice is given. Various philosophies of Christian counseling are discussed. Life of Christ (2) - A chronological look at our Savior s life on earth, with necessary historical background. Practical and inspirational. New Testament Survey (2) - An overview of the New Testament, with attention given not only to a working knowledge of chapter content and doctrine, but to an understanding of its historical background and the development of the canon. Old Testament Survey (2) - An overview of the Old Testament with attention given to the historical development of Israel and her relationship to the world around her. Pastoral Theology (2) - A thorough survey of practical pastoral work. Practical Assignment (2) - A semester s internship in one of the various selected ministries of the church. Active participation in such a ministry and a written evaluation are required of the student. A detailed description of procedure and available ministry choices is available on request. Note the number of Practical Assignments for each degree. Principles of Leadership & Church Ministry (2) - What makes a faithful Christian leader? Characteristics and principles are discussed. 10
Principles of Missions (2) Theology, concepts, principles, ethics, and the pragmatic aspects of missions work are all discussed openly and honestly. Problem Texts (2) - Examines many of the alleged contradictions in the Word of God and, through examination, brings into focus principles of textual resolution and sound hermeneutics. Personal Evangelism (2) Practical biblical illustrations and methods of evangelism are examined with instruction in sermon outlines and some practical street experience. Psychology The study of human development, behavior, cognition, personality, abnormal behavior and treatment. This course is insightful with personal application. Systematic Theology I (2) - A standard systematic approach to theology and church doctrine. Systematic Theology II (2) - A second semester of the above. It is recommended that the student take Systematic Theology I first, though it is not an official prerequisite. Thesis (6) - A significant scholarly accomplishment is required for graduation, with a minimum of 15,000 words (about 60 pages). The Thesis will discuss 36 different doctrines assigned by the Administrator. The student may meet with his advisor for consultations and progress evaluations. A detailed description of procedures and requirements is available upon request. Western Civilization This course will take students from the dawn of recorded history through the first stirrings of the Renaissance, Reformation, and the Enlightenment, with a focus on the history of thought and worldviews. Frequently Asked Questions Before surveying the courses, credit hours, and requirements for a Servant s Diploma, ThG, BD, and BA, the following facts are very important to understand: 1. The Servant s Diploma requires a course specific 32 hour curriculum. There are no elective courses. 2. Practical Assignments are offered every semester, although only one needs to be completed for the Servant s Diploma and four semesters for ThG, BD, and BA. 3. Personal Evangelism is offered four times through the four year complete cycle. Only one semester is required for the Servant s Diploma and two semesters for BD and BA. 4. Big Picture Studies will be offered through the complete four year cycle. Only one Old Testament and one New Testament study is required for the Servant s Diploma. 5. Independent and Video Studies may be approved at submission of request and the approval of the NSBI Administrator. 6. Discipleship Programs may be completed in classroom, Life Groups, or one-on-one scenarios. 7. Courses may be completed during the summer months if available. The student must present a formal request, administrator approved. 11
Practical Assignments In addition to the required and elective hours, a student will need four Practical Assignments valued at two credit hours each. These Practical Assignments will be 30 hours of hands-on ministry experience and a 3-5 page (1,000-1,500 words) typed report completed by the end of the semester. Grading is on a Pass/Fail basis. The ministry chosen must be pre-approved by the Director and include such opportunities as G & T Athletics, AWANA, Sunday School, Youth, Merge, Worship, etc. Written assignments are to be submitted to the administration and will be evaluated and approved by same. The 3-5 page (1,000-1,500 words) report should include a description of the ministry, an evaluation of the ministry, and your personal noteworthy experiences. There is a limit of one Practical Assignment per semester. Thesis In addition to all other requirements, a 15,000 word Thesis is due before Graduation. The Thesis will discuss 36 different doctrines assigned by the Director. A list of these doctrines, along with specific requirements, is available upon request. Course Registration There are no specific academic prerequisites to enter NSBI. However, the NSBI administration requires transcripts from any post-high school institutions attended by full-time students entering NSBI. While there are no lengthy application forms to complete, a personal interview with prospective full-time students is required before such registration. We at the Institute know that we can serve students better if we know their goals, their educational background, and their present spiritual situation. These kinds of things can be best gleaned from a personal interview. If you are thinking about matriculating as a full-time student, contact NSBI s administrator to set up an interview. Transfer Credits With prior approval by the administration, up to twelve (12) credits may be transferred from other institutes, colleges, universities, and seminaries. NSBI administration must determine that these transferred credits are from courses closely related in scope and application to NSBI s curriculum, or that they fill a particular need for the individual s plan of study. Credit is allowed for courses in which a grade of C- or better has been earned. 12
Finances Hourly cost of courses: - $75 per credit hour (for less than eight credit hours) - $60 per credit hour (for eight or more credit hours only) - $15 per audit hour Fifty percent of the tuition is required upon registration, checks payable to First Bible Baptist Church, or payable online at www.nsbi.info. Full payment is due to our Financial Office by December 1st for the Fall Semester and May 1st for the Spring Semester. Non-Payment Penalty While North Star Bible Institute tuition is purposely kept affordable, students are expected to use good stewardship and maintain integrity. No student may receive final grades or a transcript, or graduate while his or her financial commitments to the Institute are delinquent. If payment is not made, the student will receive an Incomplete and be declared ineligible for future classes until their balance is paid. Refunds Tuition refunds will be made based on the number of weeks into the semester attended, with a 100% refund up to three weeks, 50% up to 7 weeks and 0% thereafter. Student Spouses Spouses are encouraged to attend all courses with their husband or wife. There will be no tuition charge for the spouse. Textbooks Each instructor will inform his/her students of the required texts for the course. Purchase of required textbooks or notebooks will be the responsibility of the student. The instructor s choice of materials will reflect lasting value in the texts. Code of Conduct We are created in the image of God, designed to reflect the glory of God, i.e., to be like Him, Jesus Christ. Christians are forgiven and redeemed by the grace of God through the finished work of Jesus Christ. As believers we are to reflect the integrity, character and behavior of our Savior, Jesus Christ, in the way in which we live our lives. We must hear and do God s words (James 1:22-25). We are to be committed to love God, love people, serve others, and to tell everyone. To do this, the believer should strive to live a holy life, renew your mind, assemble together, submit to biblical authority, exercise wise stewardship, speak the truth in love, and display the fruit of the Spirit as a result of the filling of the Spirit. (Please see the calendar for exact dates for each semester). It is very important that students remember the proper procedure concerning withdrawal from classes so that there are no misunderstandings. A credit student wishing to withdraw from a class within the grace period must inform the administration (not the instructor of the class, though the instructor may be informed by the student as a common courtesy) about his desire to withdraw, and this must be done within the grace period allowed. Should a student neglect to inform the administration about his intent to withdraw from a course, the student will receive an F on his report card and transcript for the unofficially withdrawn course. The importance of keeping this policy in mind cannot be overemphasized. The incomplete grade is given at the judgment of the instructor of each individual course. It is not common, nor should it be. At the discretion of the instructor, an incomplete may be given on a report card when a student could not finish a given semester because of serious illness or some other understandable reason. An incomplete must be made up as soon as possible, by arrangement with the instructor. Students must pass all required courses in order to graduate from NSBI. 14
Repeat Courses A student desiring to repeat a course may do so for a higher grade. The new grade will replace the old grade in computation of the grade point average. Independent Study Policy Independent Study or directed reading courses are carefully overseen by the administration. Each student is required to take two of these courses to receive a degree. The administration will provide a list of course options available for the student. Special circumstances must prevail for the administration to authorize a student to take additional courses. A request for an Independent Study must be submitted to the administration in person. It is the administrator s responsibility to approve or disapprove the request at their discretion. Audit Students Those students auditing classes will not be required to participate or take exams. Accordingly, they will have no credit record or transcript. Accommodations have been made for students who would like to audit courses with a view toward receiving credit for such classes. At the beginning of the semester, the audit student must inform his or her instructor of the possibility of a future change to credit. The student will then be responsible to engage in class work as if he or she were a credit student. The instructor will record the audit student s final grade for the course. Should the audit student indeed decide to change his or her course to credit, he or she must submit the additional tuition for which that change to credit would demand. Course grade(s) will then be entered on the student s permanent record. 15
