During the week, one may neither kill a creature, nor cause pain to it. However, one may kill a creature, as mercifully as possible, in order to prevent human pain. The rules of Shabbat prohibits killing or trapping any creature on Shabbat. This includes spraying insects with insecticide, unless they could flee the spray, such that one is only chasing them away. If an insect s bite would cause great pain, and one cannot avoid the insect, then one may trap the insect and release it elsewhere. Where avoiding and trapping are both impossible, one may kill the insect. One should do this in a subtle way, to avoid misleading people into thinking that killing insects on Shabbos is generally permitted. If an insect s bite would not cause great pain, one may neither kill nor trap it to preempt a bite. While such an insect is in the act of biting, though, one may take it outside and release it there. UPCOMING EVENTS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Sunday, June 3rd, 2018 Location: Rebbetzin Judy Taub Hall 9:30 AM - Coffee & Refreshments 10:00 AM - Meeting Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto Congregation is unique in a number of ways, apparent to members and visitors alike. Our esteemed rabbinic leadership of our Mara D Asra and Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Korobkin, Associate Rabbi, Rabbi Spitz and Rabbinic Assistant Rabbi Ziring. The dedication of our wonderful office and facilities staff. The diversity of our kehilla. The depth of scholarship among our membership, many of whom regularly deliver divrei torah and shiurim. The chessed for which we are renowned. Our shul is also unique in the way that it is lay driven and the extent to which volunteers are vital to the day to day operations of our shul. As this year s Board term draws to a close and we acknowledge the contributions of our volunteers during this Tribute Shabbat, the literally hundreds of volunteers of all ages who give of their time yearly, monthly, weekly and daily should be recognized: The members of the Executive and Board of Governors: Yaakov Adatto, Jeffrey Brown, Meir Cohen, Simon Cymbalista, Avi Deutsch, Jenn Diamond, Harley Eklove, Jack Feintuch, Elaine Genesove, Craig Guttmann, Dani Goldstein, Zac Kaye, Miriam Klein, Elie Kochman, Rachel Lefkowitz, Morris Maron, Esther Meiersdorf, Steven Mendel, Michael Rende, Shloimie Romberg, Tova Segal, Mitch Silverstein, Alan Steinfeld, Heather Tanen, David Vodianoi, Leah Harfa Wercberger, Laya Witty and Zvi Woolf. The Co-Presidents of Sisterhood Miriam Klein and Yehudit Levy, and the President of Brotherhood Craig Guttmann The Chairs and members of our very many Committees The over 70 volunteers on the Security detail rotation The gabbaim, baalei tefillah and baalei keria at our 8 Shabbat morning, 5 weekday Shacharit, 4 daily mincha/maariv and numerous other weekday, Shabbat, and Yom Tov/Chag minyanim The High Holy Days chazanim and baalei tefillah, all of whom are volunteers lending their expertise to elevate our tefillot The Youth volunteers who make BAYT Youth the envy of shuls across North America and beyond And on and on. I don t think there is is a single family among our over 800 member units who have not volunteered to help at a program or event in some capacity or who have not stepped up in other ways when help has been needed. כ ל מ י שׁ עוֹס ק ים בּ צ ר כ י צ בּוּר בּ א מוּנ ה. ה קּ דוֹשׁ בּ רוּ ך הוּא י שׁ לּ ם שׂ כ ר ם May Hashem reward all those who toil on behalf on the congregation. NOTICE BOARD RENOVATION COMMITTEE For the past two years the Renovation Committee has been working with our design team to come up with a master plan for renovating and rejuvenating our entire shul. We are pleased to notify everyone that this past week we came to terms with a construction company to start the work to revitalize our shul. We have come to a understanding with FCML to be the construction managers for this project. Phase One of the plan is the rejuvenation of the downstairs area of the shul, including the south parking lot entrance, the Rebbetzin Judy Taub Hall, the Turk Family Bais Medrash, the Sisterhood lobby, and the downstairs cloak room. Scheduling of Phase One has proved challenging due to both the Jewish calendar and event bookings and so the decision was made to split Phase One into two parts one of which will be completed before the high holy days and one which will be completed after. Phase One A is now scheduled to begin the week of June 11 and will be done in time for Yom Tov. Phase One B will begin shortly after the conclusion of Succot. During the construction process there will be some juggling of access and room availability and we apologize in advance for the inconvenience. We will be doing our utmost to ensure proper signage and notifications regarding which areas are accessible and which are not. We want to thank the entire membership for its patience and understanding in this process of restoring the BAYT's beauty and pride. BAYT SISTERHOOD THE POWER OF TEHILLIM & THEIR EFFECT IN THE HIGHEST HEAVEN WOMEN S TEHILLIM GROUP The women's Sunday morning Tehillim group meets regularly on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM in West Wing Classroom 1.
