We are excited to announce our 2018 High Holy Day Service Schedule. In our desire to bring everyone together as a kehillah (community), we are offering several davening (prayer) experiences this year. Read the description of the service that will best fit your hopes for creating a meaningful prayer experience. As we are physically limited in space, if the service of your choice is at capacity and the ushers ask, please be willing to attend the other service. Rabbi Aaron Gaber will present his sermon and teaching in both services and those approximate times will be listed in the service schedule. We appreciate your patience and your help in making the High Holy Days a meaningful experience for everyone. Service A The relationship between Rabbi Aaron Gaber and the congregation helps to create a warm community, ready to celebrate the meaning of the Holiday. Cantor May will be joining us for the first time this year. She will bring her musicality, enthusiasm and presence to our service in a way that will lift us to higher spiritual levels. Rabbi Gaber and Cantor May will engage us in davening with a full High Holiday service, including key portions of the Pesukey de Zimra and Shacharit service, a full Torah and Haftarah service. Rabbi Gaber will share his High Holiday message with the congregation. Musaf will be chanted by our Cantor with a choir for selected liturgical moments. While this service will be predominantly in Hebrew, English translations and explanations will be part of the service as well. All of our prayer services are egalitarian and inclusive according to the values of Conservative Judaism. Service A is a great choice for those looking for a more traditional and yet participatory service. Service B The High Holiday season takes us on a yearly journey into our deepest selves, asking us to right our wrongs and discover our potential for growth and change. Service B will offer us the opportunity to partake in this journey in multiple ways - with the awe-filled words of the High Holiday prayers, with the joyous songs of our hearts, with meaningful discussion, and with moments of private meditation. This is a service in which we will learn and engage with the majestic themes of this season, and in which we will deepen our connection to each other. With Rabbi Marci Jacobs Aronchick joining us as our guide, Service B will be an inclusive, creative experience, accessible to all, regardless of background. In addition to song, prayer, and conversation, we will include an interactive Torah reading, the sounding of the Shofar, an opportunity to learn from Rabbi Gaber, and Yizkor (on Yom Kippur). Prepare to be challenged, to be uplifted, and to have stories to share with family and friends over Rosh Hashanah lunch.
Yom Kippur Yizkor Yizkor is a moment of deep emotion and meaning. Both Service A and Service B will have a Yizkor Service to help us to remember our loved ones as a community and congregation. To ensure everyone hears Rabbi Gaber s message of memory and transformation, he will speak at both services. Junior Congregation ~ Primary Service ~ Babysitting 10:30-12:30 (supervision will be provided until 1:15) These special kid-friendly services will help share the meaning of the High Holy Days with our children. Creative holiday observances for children, at their level of understanding, filled with the ritual of prayer, reflection, song, snacks and friendship, as we celebrate the New Year! Babysitting is provided with love by our corps of Confirmation teens. Hugging is a very important activity! Tashlich Olam Hesed Yibaneh = The World is built on Loving Kindness (Psalm 89:3). Welcome the New Year with mindfulness and music by a beautiful stream in Newtown. Tashlich is a time to cast out our sins and to begin anew. Join our community for a Post Tashlich Bring your Own Dairy Dinner Picnic. Wear comfortable clothes and together we will find the ability to transform ourselves for a New Year. Bring with you your sins and some bread to cast into the waters. Service of Remembrance Everyone has lost someone special. In memory of those we have lost but for whom we would not necessarily recite Yizkor CBOI will be holding a special Service of Remembrance on Yom Kippur Afternoon (September 19th) at 5:00 pm. The entire Community is invited to join in prayer and song as we remember all of our loved ones. This special service will be led by Rabbi Gaber, Rabbi Marci Jacobs Aronchick, and Cantor May. Yom Kippur Mincha Yom Kippur Mincha (Afternoon service) is marked by a special Haftarah, the book of Yonah. While we think we can run and even hide, the fates and God find us and Yonah reminds us that this is the time to confront our fears, reflect on our faults and see all the good in us as we prepare to complete our journey of repentance. Join us for this less formal and particularly moving service late in the afternoon. N eilah Join us for an inspirational evening of prayer as we come together to celebrate the end of Yom Kippur. At CBOI, we invite individuals and families to come up to the Bimah in front of the open Ark to offer their own personal quiet prayers while the Gates of Heaven remain open. At the conclusion of the service, everyone is welcome to sound their Shofar for an amazing final Tekiah Gedolah, long blast of the Shofar as we celebrate our redemption.

PARKING INFORMATION Parking location may vary based on projected service attendance; parking information for each service is included on the Schedule of Services. Since parking at our location is extremely limited, we are asking everyone to park at Grace Point Church and take the shuttle bus to the synagogue for services when directed to do so. Security officers will supervise parking and direct traffic for all services. 1- On-site parking for crowded services will be limited to those with special permits issued on an asneeded basis. Please contact the synagogue office. It is imperative that on-site parking be limited to permit clearance for the bus through the parking lot. 2- Security officers will direct drivers who wish to drop off handicapped passengers at the synagogue entrance. You will then be directed to park at Grace Point Church and return to the synagogue by bus. 3- Those with strollers and similar infant paraphernalia are encouraged to take the bus. If you wish, an adult and infant can be dropped at the synagogue entrance. You will then be directed to park at Grace Point Church and return to the synagogue by bus. 4- The shuttle will run a continuous loop between the two parking lots. 5- In the event of an emergency, the security officer at the synagogue door can contact the bus to ensure your quick return to your car.

Extended Family Children living at home who are age 26 and older You may purchase Guest Membership for family at this category s fee schedule Please note the following: Guest Membership can be purchased for family who live locally and are not full dues-paying members of a synagogue for no more than two years. The recipients must provide Full Names and Address. Local is defined as within a 15 mile radius of the synagogue Members of your extended family who are members in good standing of another synagogue are able to obtain Guest Membership without charge if a waiver letter is received from their synagogue. If not, this category s fee schedule will be applied. Associate Members will follow this category s fee schedule Guest Membership in this category are $100 per person. Service Leaders Rabbi Aaron Gaber Rabbi Aaron Gaber is entering his 5 th year as the spiritual leader at our welcoming, haimish, comfortable and actively involved community. In his relatively short time here he has created countless ways for every congregant to participate in learning, socializing and doing with and for each other. He has invigorated our involvement in USY, helped create a 55 Plus group of active adults and leads Tot Shabbat services among many other activities. In the process of meeting congregants, Rabbi Gaber soon discovered how much we all love our community. The I CBOI campaign was born. Whether you are 5, 55 or 105, Rabbi Gaber is here to listen to your concerns, talk about the latest current events, answer questions about Judaism and may even pose a few questions of his own. Rabbi Gaber, his wife Sharon and their children Benjamin, Yonah, Aliza and Reena welcome you to the community. He attended the Joint Program between the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University. Rabbi Marci Jacobs Aronchick Rabbi Marci Jacobs Aronchick was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary, in New York City, in 2006. She also received a Master s Degree in Talmud and Rabbinics from the Graduate School of JTS. She is a graduate of both Barnard College and List College of JTS, having earned Bachelor s Degrees in Philosophy and Jewish Thought. Upon ordination, Rabbi Aronchick served as the Assistant Rabbi of Temple Emunah in Lexington, MA for five years. In the years since, Rabbi Aronchick has served as the Director of Education for Congregation Ansche Chesed, in New York City, and Director of Teen and Family Engagement for Chizuk Amuno Congregation, in Baltimore, MD. In 2015, Rabbi Aronchick came to teach at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, in Rockville, MD, where she spends her days engaging middle school students in the study of Rabbinic literature. Rabbi Aronchick lives in the Baltimore suburbs with her husband, Jeff, and two children, Shmuel (age 4 and a half, thank you very much!) and Gavriel (almost 2). She enjoys jogging, singing, knitting, reading, and, when she can, sleeping. Cantor May Anna May is entering her fifth and final year of cantorial school at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she has always lived in New York City, except for two years she spent in Israel, where she lived and worked as a librarian at the Hebrew Union College Jerusalem Campus. The daughter of a classical pianist, Anna grew up loving music, and plays the piano, ukulele and basic guitar. She has served as a Student Cantor at Congregation Beth El in New London, CT and Temple Sinai in Middletown, NY. She has performed in cantorial concerts at JTS, in New London CT and in Calgary, Alberta. She is engaged to be married this June to Scott May. Rabbi Howard Hersch Rabbi Emeritus Rabbi Hersch was the spiritual leader at CBOI for 48 years before becoming our Rabbi Emeritus. Rabbi Hersch is a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary and holds a Doctor of Divinity Degree. He initiated many of the programs that continue to insure the stability of our congregation today. We are so pleased that he continues to be a special part of our synagogue family.
Joan Hersch Education Director Joan Hersch, our Education Director, has held many positions in the Jewish Community as a professional and volunteer. She holds a BA in Education, and M.ED in Special Education, with emphasis on the Gifted and a certificate in Jewish Educational Leadership from the Combined Leadership Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Hebrew Union College. She has been a participant and leader in national and international Jewish Education seminars and workshops. In her own words, serving as our educator has been her passion. "I am so proud to be part of this congregation, its history, the present and, its future." Jonathan Segarra Jr. Congregation Leader Jonathan Segarra is currently an Electrical Engineer working for the Department of Defense. He is responsible for the manufacturing of Visual Landing Aids and other electronic systems that help land aircraft on the decks of naval vessels. Additionally, he followed his passion for teaching, and taught at Congregation Brothers of Israel. Starting after his Bar Mitzvah as a tutor, he continued to help students until he accepted a position as the primary education teacher many years later. Esther Levitt Primary Children s Service Leader Hi, my name is Esther Levitt. I'm a Newtown resident, mother of two and bubby to four beautiful grandchildren. I received my Jewish Education at Gratz and Isaac Mayer Wise in Cincinnati. I've been a Jewish Educator since 1980 and have taught every grade as well as preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah. For the last 17 years, I've been an Education Director and I'm excited to be returning to the classroom where I can share my love of Torah and Jewish Life with my students. One of my goals is to instill a sense of pride, as well as knowledge, in our heritage. It will be my pleasure to welcome you all to my classroom in September and I promise to be easily accessible. L'hitraot. Amy Deutsch - Lead Babysitter Amy Deutsch has been working with young children in an educational setting for 2 decades. Amy enjoyed teaching on the elementary level in the public sector but found her true passion in Jewish Education. She spent 10 years as a head teacher and preschool director at Beth Zion Beth Israel in Philadelphia, where she created and grew a dynamic preschool program. Amy leads our Sunday Preschool program, Torah Tots. She is looking forward to engaging your children with interactive and fun activities!
