Important Dates: Pastor s Corner PENTECOST SUNDAY/MAY 23,2010 Rev. Samuel Loterte, SSS In honor of the feast of Mary Help of Christians, the Patroness of the congregation of the Missionary Sisters, we cordially invite you for a prayer service to be held at: Dear Brothers and Sisters, HAPPY FEAST of PENTECOST! Fifty days after Jesus' resurrection and as promised by Him, the Holy Spirit came down upon the disciples as they were all gathered together and tongues of fire came to rest on each of them (Acts 2:1, 3). This day is also known as the birthday of the Church because God's Spirit empowered the disciples to live by His word and to continue the mission given to them: "Proclaim the Good News to all creation" (Mk 16:15); "Make disciples of all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19). An important part of this mission is focusing on the social ministry of the Church. This entails reaching out to the marginalized members of our society. We recognize the Spirit present in each person, respect the dignity of the human being and work in uplifting the well-being of our brothers and sisters. Let us rejoice and be glad as we celebrate our being Church, a community of and in the Lord. We are His chosen people, the redeemed and saved. Though we stumble and fall because of sin, we continue to be Easter people of the New Covenant---the Holy Eucharist. Monday, May 24 5:30 7:30 pm followed by a Potluck. We shall have a short PowerPoint presentation on the work of the Missionary Sisters. Your presence will be highly appreciated. Mahalo! Sr.Lisa Sr.Ruth Sr.Marykutty An information sheet is available in the resource rack at church for those who would like to learn more about the feast day of Mary help of Christians. Sunday Reflection Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M. May 23, 2010; Feast of Pentecost (C) Acts 2:1 11 ; Ps 104:1, 24, 29 30, 31, 34 ; 1 Cor 12:3b 7, 12 13 or Rom 8:8 17 ; Jn 20:19 23 or Jn 14:15 16, 23b 26 Shortly after Easter one year, a woman in my parish who had been received into the Church at the Easter Vigil told me how welcomed she felt in the Catholic family. The sense of openness and tolerance she experienced was especially important to her. It's a characteristic of Catholicism to see God's goodness in all of creation, in various human endeavors, and in the cultures and histories of human beings wherever the Gospel is preached. While we haven't always lived up to that ideal, I was happy that my new parishioner experienced something of that spirit. That universal dimension is also one of the themes of Pentecost. The dramatic story of the descent of the Holy Spirit tells us how the Holy Spirit can break down walls we may put up between peoples, races, and cultures. What we see as obstacles, the Spirit can use to create a new unity, a reversal of the story of the tower of Babel in Genesis, when people let human arrogance lead to disunity, as one human language fractured into many different tongues. Today across the world, a myriad of voices, different languages and many cultural expressions will celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. Let's join our voices with that Pentecost chorus. "Sunday Soundbite" for St. Anthony Messenger Press, on the Web at FranciscanRadio.org. Religious Education Sr. Marykutty Mental Health Month Catechism teachers of 2009 August to 2010 May The Scholastic year of Religious Education program will come to an end on Sunday, May 23, 2010. My sincere thanks to all the catechists of St Joseph Parish for your cooperation in the faith formation of our kids. You have toiled hard, made lots of sacrifices with love and patience. You were there always to support, guide, and lead the kids in the path of the Lord. God bless you all. Today we continue to share information on welcoming people with mental illness. The following is a section reprinted with permission from Pathways to Promise. Adapted from original source in Bridgebuilder, Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Orange County, California: As you do with other friends, treat someone who has a mental illness as you would want to be treated, with understanding and respect. Things you need to do when a person with a mental illness: is withdrawn... initiate relevant conversation. is over stimulated... limit input; do not force discussion. is fearful...stay calm. Welcome To Our Visitors Scripture Readings Sunday, May 23 Acts 2:1-11 Ps 104:1, 24, 29-31, 34 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13 Jn 20:19-23 Monday, May 24 1 Pt 1:3-9 Ps 111:1-2, 5-6, 9, 10c Mk 10:17-27 Tuesday, May 25 1 Pt 1:10-16 Ps 98:1-4 Mk 10:28-31 Wednesday, May 26 1 Pt 1:18-25 Ps 147:12-15, 19-20 Mk 10: 32-45 Thursday, May 27 1 Pt 2:2-5, 9-12 Ps 100:2-5 Mk 10:46-52 Friday, May 28 1 Pt 4:7-13 Ps 96:10-13 Mk 11:11-26 Saturday, May 29 Jude 17, 20b-25 Ps 63:2-6 Mk 11:27-33 Sunday, May 30 Prv 8:22-31 Ps 8:4-9 Rom 5:1-5 Jn 16:12-15 3

A Ho`olaule`a court with a king & queen and island representatives presided over an entertaining program in the school gym. The court members are (in no particular order): Queen Alyxandra Hopkins; King Hunter Lee; Hawai`i - Savanica Nachor & Cruz Martinez; Kaho`olawe - Catelyn Hakoda & Sydney Wilcox; Maui Chae-Lyn Lindsey & William Scanlan-Leite; Lana`i Elizabeth Ferreira & Matthew Weldon; Moloka`i - Corinne Quinajon & Sawyer Rogers; O`ahu Savannah Brinkman & Andrew Langtry; Kaua`i Jayla Nakayama & Joshua Teuber; Ni`ihau Fallon Jarneski & Jake Galves. Malia Puka O Kalani Church Fr. Joe Hennen EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS AND LECTORS TRAINING: Due to the number of individuals who signed up to be Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors, we are limiting each person to one of the two ministries. Our parish is small and if we keep everyone who signed up for both, each person will minister only 2 or 3 times a year. If you are not happy with the ministry selected for you, please contact Fr. Joe before the scheduled training: The training for the Eucharistic Ministers (old and new) is set for Saturday, June 5, from 9:30 11:00 am. This is a mandatory meeting. Those registered and selected for Eucharistic Ministers are: Herman Moke, Candace Bautista, Patty Grube, Anna Texeira, Rupert Tripp, Joanne Peralta, Billy Baclig, Judy Fectora, Shirley Rizzo, Wendy Cortez, Freida Lee, Laverne Costa. The training for the Lectors (old and new) is set for Saturday, June 5, from 11:30 1:00. This is a mandatory meeting. Those registered and selected for the ministry of Lector are: Victor Bautista, Shirley Tripp, Maybelle Kumali, Kathleen Yamamoto, Natalie McKeen, Jeannette Lesko, Samantha Naipo-Arsiga, Moses Moke, Anita Politano Steckel, Lyric Wilcox, Gayle Wilcox, Cris Kauka. There will be a second meeting of the combination of Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers on June 26 from 9:30 10:30 am. The Commissioning will take place at both the 5:15 Mass on Saturday, June 5 and the 9:00 am Mass on Sunday, June 6. Those being commissioned need to be at one of these Masses. PENANCE SERVICE: There will be a Communal Penance Service with the opportunity for individual confession on Saturday, June 5, at 8:30 am. The following day, June 6, is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi. This will be a wonderful opportunity to ask the Lord s forgiveness and each other s forgiveness for the times we soil and stain The Body of Christ, The Church, by our selfishness, gossiping, and petty territorial pride. MAHALO: The tabernacle has a new KOA table. This is the work and the donation of our parishioner, Chris Graper. He dried the Koa, cut it, treated it, and fashioned it with love for The Blessed Sacrament. He is now making a Koa procession cross which will be ready in a couple weeks. We also want to thank Pete and Laverne Costa for having the cross over the altar made of Koa and donating it to the parish. (The corpus on this cross is an original donation of Frieda Lee). With all this completed, you will notice that all the significant sanctuary furniture is KOA: the altar, the presider s chair, the lectern, the tabernacle table, the holy oil table, the crucifix, and soon, the processional cross. With this, the refurnishing of the sanctuary is completed. By all standards, it is liturgically correct and done by using the pride of Hawaiian wood. MAHALO! New Koa stand for the tabernacle.
