Page 2 - Issue 42 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 15, 2017 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A The Mass is split into two parts, which are called the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The high point of the Liturgy of the Word is the reading of the Gospel and the Homily. The high point of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and the most important part of the Mass as a whole, is when we receive the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ, in holy communion. There is portion of the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist that often gets overlooked. I am referring to the offertory, when the bread and the wine are brought to the priest, who in turns presents them on the altar. I think what leads to us overlooking this part is that the collection is taken up at this time, so we re preoccupied with getting our money out of our wallet or purse. Our kids are fighting with each other as to who gets to put the money into the basket this week. We might be trying to sing the hymn, or watching this couple and their cute kids bring the gifts down the aisle. So what should be going on at least inwardly inside each of us during the offertory? We are to see ourselves in the bread and the wine that is placed on the altar. As the priest places the bread and the wine on the altar, we are spiritually placing ourselves on the altar. We are to place our joys, our sorrows, our sufferings, stresses; anything and everything should be internally offered to God at this moment during the Mass. As the gifts of bread and wine are presented to God, we, too, are making a gift of ourselves at every Mass. We don t just come to receive at Mass. We shouldn t just come to Mass because of what we get out of it. We are to come to give ourselves, to make a self gift of God. As the bread and wine become transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, we can become transformed as well. May we become more like Jesus with every Mass we attend, not just through receiving Him in communion, but also by imitating Him during the offertory in giving ourselves as gift to Him who gave Himself to us on the Cross. Let us become more conscious and aware during the offertory and spiritually give ourselves to God at that moment inside of Mass, so that we might better make a gift of ourselves to others outside of Mass. The center is NOT open on Saturdays. So, I do not expect any problems. We have to fill the day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with at least two people for each hour. We have created an online sign up for the hours. Sign up link is here:. https://stannchurchandshrine.org/respect-life. Please sign up and encourage your friends to do the same. Also, if your friends or neighbors are pro life but not able to pray in front of Planned Parenthood, please ask them to participate through prayer and fasting. The Archdiocese has arranged adoration as a back up for our street level prayer. We have abundant spiritual support. We just need some soldiers for October 21. The Society for the Propaga on of the Faith WORLD MISSION SUNDAY 2017 CHAT with POPE FRANCIS Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year, the en re Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of La n America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are invited to Chat With The Pope to learn more about his missions. Each year we are proud of the number of our 7 th grade students who receive academic scholarships to area Catholic High Schools. We are also proud that we have an impressive number of former St. Ann School students who have, through the years, achieved the honor of Valedictorian or Salutatorian at their Catholic high schools.
