St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The other day I was delighted to have a visit with Mrs. Therese Bermpohl, director of the Diocesan Family Life Office, http://www.arlingtondiocese.org/offices-and-directories/office-for- Family-Life. She and her assistant, Mrs. Nancy McKeague, came for lunch with Fr. Moretti, Fr. VanderWoude and myself on the topic of marriage preparations in our local parishes. The program is called Witness to Love and focuses on introducing the young engaged couples to married folks in the parish. No, the mentors are not allowed to be relatives that would be cheating. Frequently the parishes give more attention to the young and those a little long in the tooth if you know what I mean. This program hopes to reach out to the middle ground. Any couples who would like to participate in the program should drop me a note at: frgould@gmail.com Qualities of the mentors should involve Loving the Lord with all their hearts, minds, and souls as well as tolerating the priests, and dog, of the rectory. They are happy in their marriage and how it is expressed through their children. They are active in the promotion and defense of the Faith with personal attention to the sacraments. They are in good standing with the Church and should be married in the Church for at least five years. Such qualities, complimented with a good sense of humor, should serve as a good help to the young ones seeking marriage. After the wedding vows are completed and celebrations set to the memory books we would like to initiate a program where the Legion of Mary would visit the newlyweds and encourage them in the life of the parish with their devotions and social functions. Of course, with that said, let us all pray for one another. A second idea has floated past the cobwebs of my mind. Fr. Edlefsen, pastor of St. Agnes started a program where parishioners invite the new folks to the parish to come to dinner. It would be great compliment to the terrific work of the parish welcome committee that invites the newcomers to stop in the rectory for an open house. Please let me know if you would like to participate in such a program. God bless one and all. Fr. Fimian just stopped by my office and mentioned that the future bulletins will be sporting frequent reports on the new HOOPS (Helping our own parishioners) Program at St. John s. The program focuses on any assistance that can be given to the needy folks of the parish. You know, dealing with the little annoyances such as cleaning out a gutter, changing out light bulbs or filters for air conditioners. One of the current projects involves assisting an elderly parishioner with yard work. And a second involves a World War II, D-Day Vet, whose farm fence needs some attention. Please watch for future announcements on a good program. God bless our young ones leaving for college. May they have a happy, healthy, and holy venture in their academic programs. Please send me their E-Mail addresses so we can send them the weekly Dear Folks letter with collegiate question. Just another friendly reminder, Religious Ed begins on August 20 th and 21 st, so register soon as classes are filling up. Please be patient and kind to one another driving through the parking lots, especially at the beginning and ending of sessions. Volunteers are still needed, if you are able to help, please contact the Religious Ed Office. RCIA begins anew, on Monday evenings starting September 11 th at 7:00pm, in St. John s School. Collegiate Answer: The largest island in a body of fresh water that also happens to be the largest and deepest fresh water lake on earth is Olkhon Island, on Lake Baikal, Russia. It was once used as a site for Gulags filled with political prisoners. A far cry from our regional resort islands. Collegiate Question: Twenty seven years ago Bishop Oscar Romero was gunned down by assassins. Where was he killed and what was the significance of the timing of his death that reflected to old Mafia hits in America? Good hunting. Father Gould
